  1. I was scratching my head, trying to figure who you remind me of, Layzie...I finally figured it out!...you're the somali Ann Coulter, the female Bill O'Reilly. Spewing nonsense for the sake of spewing nonsense. Sorry, I can't help it if my "Nur" can see through bs... Nothing personal, it just annoys me when people talk about stuff they have no idea about. But as mentioned by our sister Faheema, we digress, let's return to the topic of class. I think both you and Marc need to re-reference a dictionary to find out what 'middle-class' means. Based on your definition of 'middle-class', the chick with 10 kids by 11 baby daddies is middle class, so is the one who uses her welfare check to buy herself a Lexus. Hmmmm, let's think on that...
  2. Originally posted by LayZie G.: PS:Afghan women are better off now than the days of the fanatics held power. It was a good call on the part of the americans to invade afghan, but not so much in iraq. [/QB] Wow, all this time I thought Layzie was a somali girl, I didn't realize you were Afghan. Because only an Afghan woman who currently lives in Afghanistan could/would/should say something about how better off they are!! Unbelievable!! Word to the wise, sometimes arguing for the sake of arguing makes people look ignorant. No offense.

    Diamond

So I bought this very topic up (the concept of diamond rings as a symbol of engagement) to a somali guy once and he says he's not opposed to the whole giving of the diamond ring thing and wouldn't mind giving one for a birthday or even Eid. But he wouldn't want to put a monetary value on his xabibti's companionship. Now, it could just be me, but that makes a lot of sense. Plus, it's not even part of our culture.
  4. Thanks for the welcome, Kool Kat..
  5. I agree with Adam Zayla..I think we might be quick to generalize... The kindest, sweetest, nicest, most generous human being I know of the male species happens to be a somali man and his existence suggests to me that there are others out there like him.
  6. 30K for a wedding? That has to be some kinda dambi.. There's nothing wrong with having a wedding but why spend an exorbitant amount of money? Gaalada can get away with it, b/c they're gaalo..but talk about israaf, I couldn't sleep well knowing that I've spent that much money on a night of nonsense (hadaan somali nahay, it's nonsense, never been to an organized somali wedding in my life) when there are some muslim ppl all over the world who don't have a dime to call their own. I guess I just don't get it.
  7. Thanks guys! I'm not much into the club scene (too many weirdos) but will definitely check out the other places you suggested (and most definitely avoid the places Stoic mentioned) JB..I'm a college student living in the middle of NoWhere, USA. The only somalis I see are my family when I go home and I haven't been to a somali populated city in ages. I figured I'd take advantage of the fact that I'm visiting classmates in Atlanta and go to a somali restaurant.
  8. Definitely I'd choose the one who's very affectioniate and well-mannered over the cold brotha with the cash.. A person can always make money, but they can never change their personality. Maybe with a little encouragement, the broke brotha can find a good, stable job. Plus in this day and age, you can be making money for yourself, why rely on someone else.
  9. wait, I didn't know I had to write about my entire life story to get a question answered. Is that how it works? my bad
  10. Salaam all, So, I'm planning on visiting some friends (they're not somali) in Atlanta next month. I've never been to Atlanta and wanted any suggestions of somali places/restaurants that are a must-go. Thanks!
  11. Thanks for the warm wlcm, Ibtisam.
  12. Salaam all, I've been a silent reader of SOL for some time now, finally decided to join..just wanted to say hello
