  1. SOMALIA: US commends Somaliland on polls - Tuesday, October 04, 2005 at 15:04 NAIROBI, 4 October (IRIN) - The United States has welcomed the recent legislative elections in the self-declared republic of Somaliland as an example to the rest of Somalia, US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said on Monday. "We congratulate the people of Somaliland on holding peaceful elections with significant voter turnout," McCormack said in a statement. "The United States calls on all political parties to work together peacefully during the post-election period to strengthen the democratic transition in Somaliland and serve as an example for greater Somalia." "The United States welcomes the September 29 parliamentary elections in Somaliland, which represent a step towards democracy in Somalia," the statement added. Somaliland voters went to the polls on 29 September to elect 82 members of the region's parliament. The polls are the breakaway republic's third since it declared unilateral independence from the rest of Somalia in May 1991, following the collapse of the administration of former President Siyad Barre. Somaliland conducted municipal elections in December 2002, which were followed by a presidential poll in April 2003 in which the incumbent, Dahir Riyale Kahin, retained the seat. In 2001, Somaliland held a referendum in which a majority of the population backed its self-declared independence. Somaliland has managed to avoid much of the anarchy that has dogged Somalia over the past 15 years. However, the territory is embroiled in a border dispute with the northeastern semi-autonomous state of Puntland over the regions of Sanaag and Sool. Source: IRIN
  2. Ismail Buubaa said: "the people have been entertained over the last 15 years that recognition was coming. Therefore, when the elections are held and recognition doesn't come what will they tell the people. What other lie will they tell the people to convince them that recognition was still on the way. A wish that cannot be fulfilled is just a fantasy. You cannot govern people by fantasies; you have to govern them by reality. There is a difference between a wish or a belief and a tangible reality. The wish is ideological but politics is based on the art of the possible." http://www.somaliaonline.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=9;t=004711

  8. Suldaankiisa, As for my heroes thread, I have countless men and women from North West regions of Somalia who believe unceasingly what I believe. Don’t plug your ears with secessionists propaganda cotton and listen to what Bubaa wondered: “He wondered whether Somaliland was ready to create a democratic atmosphere where both the unionist person and the secessionist person could advocate their positions.†"If they are ready to create such a democratic atmosphere, I am ready the whole Somali nation will be ready to listen to their wishes," Ismail Buubaa said. 10. Suldaan, thanks welcoming me back, although I am not yet fully committed to the S/online. But in case xamaasad ( our God given emotions) overpowered you and you have not taken the time listening to that piece of sound bites, Puntland officials are taking our traditional line: iska soo mar waa kuu banaan marinkaad doontaa ye….. General Duke, thanks for the advice. I do not personally give rat’s as* about inna Garaad but I can not stand the misuse of common resources and the free hand his superiors have given him.

Hargeisa’s municipal council is using BBC Somali Service radio as a war media. If not so, for impartiality and fairness, why Ina Garaad hasn’t given few minutes to the Puntland officials’ reply to the threat by the Hargeisa’s so called minister of wars carried out yesterday by the BBC air waves? To these of us who have access to the internet and radio Laascood and Widh Widh online, we do not need Ina Garaad’s radio but I can imagine many qat chewing circles in Hargeisa fanaticizing about marching to Garowe while not factoring in the consequences of the council’s actions. 14. I have listened to it. It is just throw-ups intertwined with emotions. Emotions, because if the debate is just pronouncements and I said so’s, rationalization, logical deductions and validations are swept under the rug. We just seceded because Ina Waraabe is going to be the president and he promises that he will not bother other Somalis. We believe good government, democracy and justice. No, Sanaag and Sool are not allowed to leave the federation and we will keep the colonial borders intact. There will be multiple Somali nation-states each of which is recognized internationally and each of which will have its own embassies in the world capitals. We are so rich that we can afford to put all the disadvantaged members of the society in welfare rolls. We have mandate from the public to speak for them. The newly Somali federal government has no legitimacy. Uf, I have no time for this nonsense.
  15. This is another example of how Ina Garaad and Ina Cige are promoting the agenda of the secessionists in Northwest Somalia. Interviews are staged so that lies and falsehood are passed out as truth. If you listen carefully to day’s interview, April the 3rd, by Ina Cige with one of the Riyaal’s milita, you will agree with me that it is a staged interview because no fair-minded journalist would have put up with such assertions full of oxymora. The interviewee tells Ina Cige that Hargeisa is a sovereign nation-state that can enter international contracts with any other sovereign government. He says that the People’s Republic of China invited his government to come to China to explore the possibility of creating bilateral agreements in commerce and trade. He says his government agreed to such honorable invitation because (now laugh hard) the passport of the Somali Republic is no more acceptable in United Arab Emirates. As the head of the Hargeisa’s chamber of commerce, he says, he had been given the task of the trade negotiations with China and that he just returned from Peking. Where is the objectivity of the journalists? How it is possible for Ina Cige to have failed in asking the right questions? Wasn’t it the right time to ask the gentleman how it is possible for him to represent two sovereign states at the same time? Ina Riyaale’s state for which you are entering the trade negotiations with China and the Republic of Somalia on whose passport you are traveling? Has China recognized Hargeisa as a sovereign so that the two CENTRAL BANKS can deal with each other? I say to Ina Garaad if the secessionists are not willing to be intellectually changed, do not give them free air time. Enough is enough. The BBC has helped the creation of punch of Somali individuals who believe they are part of a phantom state that is independent of the Republic of Somalia. Unchecked veiled messages can have long term negative outcome.

  17. Today, Ina Cige reported that an A. U. fact finding mission arrived in Hargeisa. The delegation met the press and declared their intention to visit different regions of Northern Somalia. If Ina Cige is not partial, wasn’t it the right time to ask them how it would be practical for them to visit the Northeastern regions such as Sool and Sanaag if they have to be escorted by Riyaale’s militia?

  19. Why We Should Be Patient With Somalia Mohamed Abdi Affey April 28, 2005 Kenyans will receive a standing ovation from the Somali people and the IGAD region once sanity is restored in Somalia. For years, Kenyans will reap the benefits of peace and stability in Somalia. As the most stable country in East Africa, Kenya has had to serve as chief negotiator in the peace processes following civil strife in the region. Somalia has been an especially interesting case, given that it has had no central government for over 14 years. Due to the central role that Kenya and the international community played in the negotiations that brought together Somali leaders, Somalia is now on the path to regaining statehood after 14 years. The immediate positive impact will be felt by Kenyans through their participation in reconstruction efforts in Somalia. Equally, our national institutions will benefit in dealing with a friendly partner in Somalia, particularly in regard to security challenges. The current situation may not be ideal in that Kenya is still hosting the Transitional Federal Government elected by delegates right here in Nairobi. This is one of the reasons that Kenyans should not tire hosting Somali refugees along with their nascent government. It is legitimate for Kenyans, fatigued by having to intervene in their neighbours' wars, to be impatient and demand the relocation of President Abdullahi Yusuf's Government to Mogadishu. Such frustration may not be altogether misplaced considering that Somali refugees and Government are, indeed, a burden to taxpaying Kenyans. There is no shortage of reasons for which Kenyans would want to see Somalis back in their country rather than in refugee camps or on the streets of Nairobi. However, other factors militate against the speedy and wholesale repatriation of the Somali people along with their newly-minted Government. The first is that after 14 years without a central administration, a bit of time is required for structures to be put in place and for the government to be put together. To be precise, they start from ground zero in every aspect. But even if the international community and other players were to raise the resources necessary for repairing destroyed government buildings, putting in place information and communication infrastructure, hiring staff for various government functions and other basics, there is the security issue to consider. Given the big number of small and big arms in the hands of militiamen, and considering the failures of other peace initiatives in the past, disarmament would need to be achieved to an appreciable level before the Government can move to Mogadishu. Failure of disarmament can only mean that the new government would lack legitimacy. It would also mean an increase in internecine violence. So far, the peace process spearheaded by the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is the first one that has held, thanks to the fact that all the leaders were involved. A necessary follow-up to the inauguration of the Transitional Government has been to ensure structures of governance start functioning. Like an individual who has been bedridden for years, enough time is required before the patient is able to walk after being discharged from hospital. In more than one ways, Somalia, as a nation, is just emerging from the ICU. As has been pointed out, the Transitional Government will be starting from scratch. The 14-year war means nothing exists in the way of records. There is nothing to inherit for the new government. Just consider that there is no exchequer, let alone monetary resources. Faced with this reality, the Transitional Government has had to rely on the international community to piece together a plan with which to create a nation from the rubble of violence, despair and hopelessness. The outstanding issue remains peace and security - issues that demand continuous bonding and consensus building between various parties ahead of the relocation. In piecing together a masterplan that emergent Somalia would need to follow, it is important that there are no missteps. With the history of violence that could encourage retribution, any mishaps on the part of the new administration would lead to the eruption of largescale violence. And most people are not certain the international community will be willing to engage in another round of negotiations should peace fail to hold. Cynics may wonder why we should be concerned about peace in Somalia. Well, Kenyans have borne the brunt of violence in many ways. Somalia's statelessness has had devastating effect on our environment, security and economy. Crime levels have increased in Kenya because arms are acquired easily from Somalia. A new government would help manage this. Counterfeit goods are coming into Kenya through Somali ports, thus destabilising our economy. This would be handled through a taxation regime by the new government. The recent upsurge of inter-clan wars, especially on the Kenyan border, is not only a risk to Kenyans at the border, but to our national security in general. A strong central Government in Somalia could assist Kenya in its endeavour to make its borders risk-free. Finally, a word of advice to the Somali Government. Get your act together, reconcile your people, and quickly establish your foothold in your mother country so that the efforts of Kenyans and the international community is not wasted. • Mr Affey is Kenya's Ambassador to Somalia We welcome the submission of all articles for possible publication on WardheerNews.com. 20. It is unacceptable that Somali voices remain silent on the ridiculousness of what Ina Garaad with the help of his right-hand man Ina Cige are doing to the Somali psyche, especially the psyche of the people of North West Somalia. It is given ( let Ina Garaad ask his immediate British supervisor) the objectives of the BBC Somali Service is to help Somali people get relevant information that may, in whatever degree it is, improve their living standards. I mean, basically, all man-made institutions toil to enhance the living conditions of human beings. Whatever role they play in societies, their functions directly or indirectly contribute to the wellbeing of humanity. The air waves of the BBC are not intended to work against the interest of the Somali people. It is as clear as the light rays bombarding your retina if you are not blind; the whole world, including the British government has been denying the claim of the few armed militias to break up The Somali Republic. For more than fourteen years, the world has been denying Ina Riyaale and likes forum to convince the universe that Somalis, one of the purest races in time memorial, can not live together under one nation. Recognition of the Hargeisa’s municipal council as an independent state is light-years away. As Somalis say, it is like hair strands budding out of a palm. It is self-defeating to tally for the few who are suffering from SBS (Siyad Bare Syndrome) the rationales on which the world bodies based their refusal to break up the Somali Republic for many articulate true sons of Somalia have been doing justice to them and had unaccountable knockouts. Pseudo journalists Ina Garad and Ina Cige must know their ways to these treasures and all other supporting arguments for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia. They must stop being submissive to the Riyale’s militia and the other fake so-called political parties that are caged in Hargeisa’s barn zoo. Do not think I am just using superlatives to mud the BBC Somali chief editor. Ina Garad heads a powerful tool that affects the psyche of many Somalis especially the young and innocent. He is accountable to his actions and his unbalanced editorial pieces for it seems his British supervisor gives him a free hand to run the show. In his mind he may be trying to be impartial but he is not. An example illustrates this point. Today, 26th of April, Ina Garaad gave 12 minutes and 20 seconds of free air time to Riyale’s militia when his right hand man In Cige granted an interview to the head of so called commission of elections, Mr. Cadaan, a hypocrite who claimed that 70% of the bill for the anticipated elections in Hargeisa is footed by European Union along with the British government. For an inattentive person, this interview carries the message that the E.U. perceives Hargeisa’s municipal council head a sovereign African government. Was not it the right moment that Ina Cige ask the interviewee to clarify to the audience if the E. U. is funding the elections because they see Northwest regions as self governing province of the Federal Republic of Somalia or as a sovereign broke African “democracy†that deserves financial assistance? In any case, this is a wake up call for all Somalis and other peace loving people. News serving industry works for the people. When Ina Garad and Ina Cige give free air time to Riyale’s militia to spread their misleading propaganda and falsehoods, have they ever thought how the minds of the 9 years olds in Hargeisa are being manipulated and distorted? No, the simple fact is they have not and you and I are silent about it.

  25. You know what happened in Ina Garaad’s radio today? F. Waraabe was given a scope of air time to spread his waraabiisim (cannibalism) and nonsensical reasoning for his suicidal attempt to dismember Somali Republic. Worst than that he did not call Ina Garaad’s radio as it is normal for Somali pseudo politicians to phone BBC for addressing accusations made against them by others. But examine this carefully. He was contacted and interviewed by one of Ina Garaad's staff. Several times he stressed that the Somali people in Sool and Sanaag regions and the few secessionists in Hargeisa share an exclusive umbilical cord of brotherhood and that they together have common enemies who are no other but the other Somalis who he described as the black evil hand separating them. He said he wanted to capture their hearts and minds for his blind and unrealistic cause. The straw that broke the camel's back is that Mr. Waraabe insulted and labeled radio Laascaanood a liar and propagandist. Where is Ina Garaad’s journalist impartiality? Wasn’t it the right time to ask Mr. Waraabe if he believed the principle of self-determination and whether he was prepared to accept the judgment of the people of Sool and Sanaag if they are polled through ballot box to go with the secessionists and dismember Somali Republic or preserve Somali unity and stay with the bigger family??? Wasn't it the right time to remind him of the World stand for the sovereignty, political freedom and territorial integrity of Somalia? (Adduunku waxa uu idiiin arkaa in aad kuligii walaalo tihiin)… On the other hand Ina Garaad did not bother to call radio Laascaanood journalists and reporters and asked them about what they had been accused of! Radio Laascaanood is a respectful Somali local radio and has large numbers of audiences. The only thing they propagandize is the Somali unity….but the question is why ina garaad is always putting the issue of Somali unity on the backburner and at the same time loosen the rob for the few secessionists by giving them free air time? How many Somali persons can the likes of Mr. Waraabe speak for? Sadly, British taxpayers’ money is being wasted.
