(AP) The Rev Al Sharpton, the radical civil rights leader who is now a close ally of President Obama, was a Federal Bureau of Investigation informer who helped to jail a number of Mafia bosses, it has been claimed.
An investigation by the Smoking Gun website claims that the 69-year-old television host and White House regular was "turned" by the FBI after being implicated in a drug deal.
The website said that he agreed to wear a wire tap during conversations with Mob bosses, including leading members of the Genovese crime family, the largest and most feared Mafia outfit in the United States.
A Baptist minister who is said to have been targeted by the FBI because of his extensive contacts in the music and sports industry, as well as the New York underworld, Mr Sharpton has always denied being a "snitch."
He has said that his only contact with the police was to gather information in order to help drive out drug dealing in the black communities he worked in.
But the Smoking Gun website claimed that interviews with a number of detectives on a joint FBI and police taskforce called the Genovese squad revealed that Mr Sharpton was a valued informer who delivered at least 10 taped conversations that led to the jailing of a number of mobsters.
It also produced internal documents showing that the recordings were used to help gain court approval for further secret taping at gang members' homes and other places they associated.
Asked why he cooperated with the police, who in public he frequently lambasted, one unnamed former member of the squad said: "He thought he didn't have a choice," after being taped by an agent pretending to be a drug dealer apparently agreeing to buy cocaine.
Starting in the mid-1980s with the codename CI-7 - for Covert Investigator number seven - he is said to have operated as a police spy for about four years.
In one lengthy memo, the agents discussed how Mr Sharpton's identity could be concealed from the court in order to protect him from Mafia reprisals.
The FBI are also said to have provided him with a briefcase containing a secret camera, with which to record members of four of the five New York crime families he is said to have been familiar with.
Those said to have been bugged include organised crime associates Dominick "Baldy Dom" Canterino, music industry supremo Morris Levy, and Federico "Fritzy" Giovanelli.
He also allegedly passed on information about Don King, the boxing promoter.
A prominent supporter of and fundraiser for President Obama, Mr Sharpton was on the dias on the steps of the US Capitol building when he was sworn in last year. He also attended a private 50th birthday party at the White House for the President's wife, Michelle.
In his 2013 book "The Rejected Stone," Mr Sharpton denied being an informer, saying that he was once "set up by the government," whose agents later leaked "false information" that "could have gotten me killed."
Questioned about the allegations this week, he denied being "flipped" by federal agents. Asked about the secret recording he added: "I'm not saying yes, I'm not saying no."

4. Where the world’s 30 million slaves live
To quote Rajiv Narayan from Upworthy, “Sure 12 Years a Slave won an Oscar, but we all deserve to win Best Actor for pretending slavery doesn’t exist anymore.”
The map above, issued by the Walk Free Foundation stains the world map with reds representing concentrated slavery presence and lighter yellows for lower concentrations. The index considers estimated prevalence of modern slavery by population, child marriage, and human trafficking in and out of a country.
5. Global Vegetation
This view of the world’s vegetation presented by NASA clearly depicts the pastoral difference between Northern and Southern Africa. 6. World Water Risk
When we say we have a global water crisis, we mean it. The World Resource Institute use a mapping tool called Aqueduct to help companies, investors, governments, and the public understand the global water stress and risks. Notice the similarities with the previous map now? You should. While there is opportunity for agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa, Northern Africa and parts of Southern Africa face high risk of water scarcity.
7. Global Internet Usage
On a continent where only 7% of its inhabitants are online, this map is an eye-opening illustration of the digital divide. With the internet comes improved access to information, communication and ideas – and organisations need to make sure to bridge the gap. The good news is that Africa’s telecommunications market is one of the fastest growing in the world.
8. Energy Poverty
Last but not least, this snapshot of the world at night, stitched together with photos from NASA, contrasts with the little access to electricity in Africa compared to the global north. Energy poverty translates to poor health care, stifled economic growth, toxic fumes, limited or no education, and lack of safety.

MH370: Pentagon has "indications" that the missing plane may be in the Indian Ocean

KUALA LUMPUR: An official from the United States (US) revealed “indications” that Malaysia Airlines (MAS) flight MH370 which went missing since March 8, may have crashed into an area where the Indian Ocean and the Andaman Sea merge and are sending the USS Kidd to the area to begin searching, reported ABC news.
The official, however told ABC News that they needed 24 hours before the ship could be deployed to the area.
“We have indications that the airplane has crashed into the Indian Ocean,” said the official.
The individual also explained that there were also indications that the plane may have flown four to five hours after its last contact with radar.

The revelation made by the official was following the statement made by acting Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein during a press conference on Thursday who denied earlier reports by The Wall Street Journal which reported that the plane may have flown several hours after its last contact.
Efforts of tracing the Boeing 777-200 started in the South China Sea before being expanded into the Straits of Malacca and later into the Andaman Ocean.
The search was expanded after evidence emerged showing that the plane may have turned back from its original route and was last traced at the north of Peninsula Malaysia near the Straits of Malacca.
“We are working closely with the FAA and NTSB in regards to the possibility of a turn back,” said Hishammuddin.
During Thursday’s press conference, Hishammuddin also denied reports of images which may have connection to the missing plane caught by the Chinese satellite in the South China Sea.
The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) which later surveyed the area however found that the reports were untrue. The Chinese embassy later informed that the images were published without approval and did not show traces from MH370.

This is a very very inspiring speech. The best speech given by a Somali in a long time. Somalia's leaders need to learn a thing or two from this intelligent and passionate leader.
I am a fan of Aadan Ducaale.
