Somaliland UAE ink development projects

Recommended Posts

Just not so sure about the sums if they are in the order as specified in that tweet. But in any case, Berbera Corridor as well as the expansion of the port and new Airport will help bring back Berbera's status in the Gulf of Aden.

On another news, Air Arabia, one of the largest budget airlines in the Gulf has just made its maiden flight to Hargeisa.

Already, Fly Dubai flies daily to Hargeisa.

Diktoore Oodka,

Let them bark, because that is all they can do, but this great caravan of ours has a target and no one is going to stop it.

It is good to have economic development that will benefit the people, but there is legitimate case to be made against having a military base of UAE when clearly the intention is make us party to the conflict in Yemen which is going badly for Saudi/UAE and will become even worse as time goes by. Its unnecessary to conspire against a Muslim neighbor in which we have deep historical roots. Just because you want to break up Somalia, should not mean to become a party to a an illegitimate war that has killed thousand of civilians in Yemen.

The Somali government does have a lot of power but they are wise enough not to use it against Somaliland in the hope of stability, peace and reconciliation. What is needed is cooperation in the areas of peace and development and leave secession issues for the future.

Yemen conflict is not a long term issue. The UAE is trying to block Turkey from coming to Somaliland after the talks are concluded. Berbera is a very strategic military wise.

Other powers that are eyeing include Russia. There is a delegation from Somaliland that was invited to Russia recently.

With regards to FGS, the only power they have is a seat in the UN. And a seat in the UN does not necessarily mean they have legal control over Somaliland.

If FGS escalates the issue to the International Court, that will be a golden opportunity for Somaliland to challenge the legality of FGS in relation to 1960s union. As far as Somaliland, any new deal that the Warlords of Somalia agreed on in Kenya which this FGS is based on, does not bind to Somaliland.

The international community of which the EU, US & UK understand this very fact. Which is why they deal with Somaliland as a de facto entity waiting for a binding settlement with Mogadishu.

Lombardy and Veneto (Italy) are holding referendums for greater autonomy from Rome. apparently inspired Catalonia and Scotland independence bids. The regions had independence aspirations in the past but now, the governors claim they want more control over the finance, immigration among other things. The point being secessionist movements are becoming up. International organizations and countries are not in mood of opening pandora's box.

The US, EU, AU and Arab League are not going to encourage secession.

The best Somaliland could hope in terms of independence is greater autonomy. They might, however, get lucky if Ethiopia disintegrates, a possibility. In any case, a bravado aside, their best option is to sit with Mogadishu.

Dubai's DP World to develop free zone in Somaliland

Dubai-based DP World announced on Monday that it will develop a greenfield economic free zone in Somaliland to complement the development of the Port of Berbera.

DP World Group chairman and CEO Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem and Republic of Somaliland Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr Saad Ali Shire have signed an agreement for the Berbera Free Zone (BFZ).

The development is based on DP World’s Jebel Ali Free Zone (Jafza) in Dubai and aims to attract investments, encourage trade, create new jobs and position Berbera as a gateway port for the region, a statement said.

Under the terms of the agreement, DP World will develop BFZ in phases, with the first phase focusing on 4 square kilometres of land out of the 12.2 square kilometres earmarked for the project.

Future phases will be detailed in a concept plan together with the projected capital investment required from DP World for its development.

Each phase of the BFZ will start once the previous phase has achieved 85 percent occupancy, the statement said, adding that it will target a wide range of businesses including warehousing, logistics, traders, manufacturers and other related businesses.

Further details of the BFZ will be concluded with Somaliland’s new government after the country’s elections scheduled next week.

Bin Sulayem said: “We are excited by Somaliland’s development opportunities which has parallels with the start of our own growth in Dubai and the UAE.

“We look forward to finalising the details of the Berbera Free Zone with the next government of Somaliland and look forward to our continued partnership.”

The new facility will build on DP World’s existing operations at the Port of Berbera where it has achieved substantial production gains in recent months. In September, the port recorded the highest container volumes in its history with a 40 percent increase compared to September 2016.

Divers Group Says It's Building U.A.E. Naval Base in Somaliland

By
Nizar Manek
November 22, 2017, 12:14 AM EST

Divers Marine Contracting LLC started construction of a United Arab Emirates naval base in a semi-autonomous region of northern Somalia.

The closely held Sharjah-based engineering group began work on the project after being awarded the $90 million contract in April, Managing Director Abdulla Darwish said in an interview in Dubai. The facility, being built near the regional port of Berbera, is expected to be completed by June, he said.

Berbera is located on the Gulf of Aden, 260 kilometers (162 miles) south of Yemen, where U.A.E. troops in a Saudi Arabia-led coalition are battling Houthi rebels. Somaliland’s foreign minister said in May that the U.A.E. leased the airport in Berbera for 25 years as part of a pact for a military base. The gulf country is also building a military installation in Eritrea.

The Somaliland naval base will include a 300-meter (984-foot) L-shaped inland berthing port with a depth of 7 meters “to support the military airport,” accommodating naval vessels to patrol the Gulf of Aden, according to Darwish.

“It’s not a commercial port,” he said. “It’s only for naval vessels.”

Somaliland Foreign Minister Saad Ali Shire didn’t immediately respond to two calls to his mobile and two emails seeking comment. A U.A.E. foreign ministry official didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
