MOGADISHU: Dozens of Yemeni refugees fleeing the fighting and Saudi-led airstrikes in Yemen have arrived in the northern parts of Somalia, local officials and the U.N. said Tuesday.

At least 32 Yemenis arrived by sea in the northern breakaway area of Somaliland and the semiautonomous Puntland region Saturday, according to the U.N. refugee agency.

Some 12 Yemeni families arrived at Berbera port on the Gulf of Aden after traveling from Yemeni’s third largest city of Taiz, where warplanes had carried out strikes targeting the Houthi rebels, Omar Abokor, the deputy manager of Somaliland’s Berbera port, told reporters Tuesday.

The arrival of the Yemenis is in stark contrast to the usual flight to Yemen of hundreds of Somalis escaping violence and poverty at home.

Yemen hosts more than 238,000 Somali refugees, according to the U.N. refugee agency.

Concerns were also being raised in Somalia over a potential backlash against Somali refugees in Yemen after the Somali government expressed support for the Saudi-led airstrikes against the Houthi fighters in Yemen.

Somalia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement last week that it stands by the Yemeni government in its war against the rebels.

The Somali government’s decision to publicly support the assault on the Houthi rebels may endanger the lives of Somalis living in Yemen, said Hassan Abdullahi, a university lecturer in Mogadishu who studied in Yemen.

Horta can't the bloody Koonfuria administration ever stay neutral in the affairs of other nations? Something is fundamentally wrong with the Somalis. Whether it is our youth and so called wadaado shedding their tears and blood in far away conflicts when our house is on fire; or whether it is Somali entrepreneurs investing their wealth in other xenophobic societies when our own people are jobless and in need of investment; there seems to be no end to our lack of prioritisation.

I wish for the people of Yemen peace , it seems Iranians are destroying and provoking a civil war in Yemen like they destroyed other nations in ME region. Why the Moqadisho administration of Hassan Sheikh has decided to support a faction in Yemen while hundres of thousands somalia and Somaliland people are stranded refugees in Yemen is not understandable, wrong and could be a dangerous move for the safety of those somali people , our people in Yemen. http://www.hiiraan.com/op4/2015/mar/98851/open_letter_to_ant%C3%B3nioguterres_unhcrhigh_commissioner.aspx . The situation is really dangerous. MY GOD protect you.

It was a big mistake for the president to take side on this sad conflict. I guess the Arab financiers of his Damuljadiid political part was going to cut him off if he didn't show visible support.
