UN approves surge in Somalia troops vs. al-Shabab

Recommended Posts

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council has approved a surge of African Union troops to fight al-Shabab militants in Somalia.

The council voted unanimously Tuesday to authorize almost 4,400 more African Union troops and massive U.N. assistance to break the stalemate in Somalia, where top U.N. officials say the war against Islamic militants has ‘‘ground to a halt.’’

The council authorized an African Union force of 22,126 troops, up from 17,731.

The surge is meant to provide a short-term enhancement to the force known as AMISOM. After 18 to 24 months, the U.N. wants to hand over the fighting to the Somali army and send a U.N. peacekeeping mission to replace the AU force.

The resolution also approves 12 new military helicopters from troop-contributing countries.

Arming and Training the Somali Arm Force is best solution to secure country from alshabaab , SFG trained thousand of troops inside and out side country .

For UN to give time table for AU pullout by 2015 is a good news and positive step .

Helping Non-Muslims against your Muslim brother, even if he's a wrongdoer is a grievous sin. I ask Allah to unite the Somalis against its real enenemy, the gaalo(of all colours) and not each other.

Akhi, Somalis have been killing each other for 18 years before Shabab showed up, but now suddenly shabab destroyed Somalia. It's not good to play the blame game, once you point your finger at something, three fingers point back at you. I don't know of any solutions, but to help a Non-muslim against my muslim (wrongdoing) brother is a big no-no. Even the gaalo have this sense of loyalty.
