BOSSASO, Somalia Jan. 23, 2013 (Garowe Online) - The president of Somalia’s Puntland government returned to Bossaso on Wednesday where he was welcomed by government officials and local citizens, Garowe Online reports.

Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole flew from the port city of Bossaso to Djibouti on Jan. 16 leading a government, including Ports Minister Said Mohamed Rage and Security Minister Khalif Isse Mudan.

Addressing reporters at Bossaso International Airport, President Farole said he traveled to Djibouti to attend the funeral of Djibouti’s Central Bank chairman, the late Jama Mohamud Hayd.

President Farole said he expressed condolences to the Djibouti people and government, on behalf of the people and government of Puntland.

The Puntland president again sent condolences for the death of former Puntland Vice President Hassan Dahir Mohamud (Afqura), who died of an illness in Nairobi this week.

President Farole said that the Puntland delegation engaged in meetings with Djiboutian leaders, including President Ismail Omar Guelleh, with discussions centered on regional issues and relations between the parties.

“We also held meetings with the U.S. ambassador to Djibouti and Puntland welcomes the announcement that the U.S. government has officially recognized the Somali Federal Government, as this is a good step for the whole of Somalia and the country’s political future,” said President Farole, reiterating the Puntland government’s official position.

Puntland is a region in northeastern Somalia with its own state government since 1998 and is part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
