Little progress in Somaliland and Somalia talks

Recommended Posts

LONDON — A tense first day formal discussions between feuding neighbours Somaliland and Somalia in a secret location near London has run into rough weather on Wednesday.

According to sources in London issues such as Somaliland’s independence, bilateral ties and cooperation in key areas remain as the biggest hurdles. “The first day deliberation lasted five hours and the two sides remain deadlocked on number of issues,” the source, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Somalilandpress.

Somaliland, which enjoyed relative peace for the last two decades, primarily seeks Somalia to accept and acknowledge its statehood. Mogadishu believes the northern region is part of its integral territory.

Somaliland and Somalia’s transitional government have struggled to put their relationship on an even keel since joining into a temporary union in July 1960. Somaliland withdrew from the union in 1991 after a war that left hundreds of thousands of people killed says it has no plans to reunify.

The source said talks will resume later today (Thursday) and are expected to last the whole day. It further added the mediators — Britain, Norway and the EU might force the negotiations into an overtime– as they sought to find a compromise.

The sponsors said they want the two sides to clarify their future relations and where the two stood on issues such as foreign aid, security, development and cooperation.

Regional experts have said a breakthrough was unlikely any time soon considering this was the first face-to-face dialogue in 21 years. The private meeting between the rival sides has prompted speculation as to the timing– the transitional government’s term expires in August and is due to hand power over to a new permanent government.

Wednesday’s five-hour long meeting was a preparatory talk which could represent the start of the next stage of negotiations if common ground is established.

Both sides have sent a team of five members.

Its an utter disgrace for somaliland and Siilaanyo & Co politics, they agreed on nothing but to look and act pretty for the donors in fighting the so called pirates, terrorist and illegal fishing as though we needed to go to to UK and be mediated by some 13 Europeans countries to agree to fight our pirates and protect our fish loool

Its a shrade , and i really felt ashamed when Yuusuf Graad asked the bold short dude a.k.a Dr Beenaale if they discussed at all the nationhood of somaliland and he said no the entire meeting wasn't about the nationhood of somaliland and yet at the same time he was boasting about the 8th point that stated the end of TFG????? why should somaliland care i have no clue.

They agreed on an open border ???? since when the border was closed ??? this is a debacle for Siilaanyo hiden agenda, asked on what ground the 2 president will meet and for what reason Somaliland'd delegation couldn't even say for what.

This is a chilidish silly game , its only a pretext for Siilaanyo's goverment to meddle somaliland into Somalia's politics and to use this open-ended Oslo Accord secenerio to participate in every Somali conference.

Its a start Somaliland and Somalia talked for the first time after 21 years it has a long way to go Somaliland and Somalia agreed to fight against terrorism and piracy this was not the case they also agreed to set up another committee and continue the talks. Also the two Presidents will meet shortly in one of the Arab countries to continue further talks between Somaliland and Somalia this is a good step we should welcome this.President Siilaanyo broke the ice his policy is working when it comes to foreign policy.

Dude president Siilaanyo or Riyaale and Cigaal had 21 years open venue to meet any TFG southern president, but it was somaliland who always refused, we didn't need to go to UK and meet in a sweatshop after 6 months and 2 conferences London and Istanbul just to get the chance to meet the celebrity Mr Dalxiis in mid-east hotel.

And that applies to both piracy and illegal fishing we could have met with them anytime any where if our intention was as such, but it wasn't , the issue was and always been the future status and arrangment between the 2 territories, and nothing was discussed regarding that elephants in the room. This was a weird belly dancing and a shamless show of panhandling.

The fact is simple Somalia will never-ever recognize somaliland, why waste our time and soil and soften our position for the last 21 years just so Xirsi Daba-Gaab and his dwarf buddy can go to a diseny-land trip in london.

^^ Oke so you're prefer Ina waran cade's policy declare war on Somalia or Mohammad xaashi not calling them brothers Adan Jugle , President Siilaanyo is playing people's diplomacy the talks between Somaliland and Somalia was suggested in the London conference by the the international community they will be present when such talks are being planned. Somaliland is in better situation than Somalia when it comes to talks. Somalia cannot refuse anything Somaliland called for all legal recruitments to do the legal legal framework between Somaliland and Somalia SL just need to prepare the next talks between the two countries its all well this was a historical day.

This was a progress. It is too early to declare a success or failure, but the first meeting was just that , first meeting intended to prepare other and more important meetings. Also Somaliland got the respect it so insisted as the composition of the previous committee was altered .

For you even if somaliland was flushed down the toilet is historic. But any sane somalilander can see the situation today clearly, Dr Beenaale insisted time and time again that these talks would be about the future of somaliland's nationhood, and all of sudden when he was asked today he said "somaliland'd nationhood wasn't even in the agenda", and further when he was asked what would Siilaanyo ahd Mr Dalxiis will discuess he couldn't say so.

Its pretty clear and obvious unless you are deaf and mute that you were told plenty of times that Somalia's unity is not nogatiable, its in the constitution that was sponsered and payed for by these same "IC" you seem to regard as omnipotent. So what part you don't seem to understand. If these talks drag on we will confuse our population and that could wreck our stand and divide us.

Everytime we go to these endless meetings we are weakening our position and the southers will see it as a softening of somaliland resolve, the process should be limited it should have been done in simple 2 stages period, there is nothing to discuess but somaliland's statehood and after then we can talk about fishing and hunting lizard agreements. this is dangerous and siilaanyo's agenda is obvious.

You seem a bit worried about the koonfurians there is nothing there to be afraid of Somalia's government barely controls the Banadir region Somalia its self is divided more than anything the TFG is one of the many entities of Somalia. If you compare it to Somaliland an elected government an elected parliament territorial control. Adan this is the first phase of the talks they were paving the road for the next phase of talks between the two Presidents this is heading the right direction you have to give talks a chance this is the way to get state recognition for Somaliland.
