Somaliland began this ambitious project the fiber optic but it was stopped by angry locals and the project has now been shelved and cancelled to maintain the peace in the region. Somcable to roll out next-gen broadband across Somaliland

 

The entire region of Somaliland is to be given access to next-generation broadband by end of 2012, thanks to a £35m rollout to be carried out by Somcable.

 

The investment will see 1200 Km of new fibre being laid to bring speeds of up to 100Mbit/s to homes and businesses in the region.

 

The chief executive of Somcable, Mike Cothill, said that the rollout would stand as a "flagship example of what can be achieved with new technology in the emerging market". "We expect to cover 80 to 90 per cent of the county with fibre-to-the-rural or fibre-to-the-towns by 2013, with the rest of the county being connected either through wireless technologies" he said. "We think demand will be high, especially from businesses, and we hope to have our first customers up and running on the new services by end of the year. "

 

Aron Glenn, IP Engineer of the Somcable Company, said that the rollout represents a " lifetime's investment in Somaliland" and would have significant economic benefits.

There is this uncle of mine there, I was just told he was awarded a part of the cable mashruuc (big Kulmiye supporter and related to the Minister of Foreign Affairs).

What part does the minister Moh. Abdullahi plays and why does business and politics mixes so well there?

 

It is high time the fat cats and Telecoms in particular are either seriously taxed or nationalised as everywhere else (France, Djibouti etc) to avoid being a land where only the rich or well-connected have some prospects: else, what is the point of all those businesses or investments apart from inequalities, social and environmental disturbances?
