President of Puntland’s Term to End in 2014

The Speaker of the Parliament in Somalia’s Puntland State, Abdirashid Mohamed Hirsi , has confirmed that the current government will stay in power till 2014. According to the speaker, the new constitution will be ratified by 480 representatives across the state instead of ‘one-man-one-vote’ process, as the steadily-growing opposition has called for.

The very vocal opposition is mainly made up of disgruntled ex-ministers, most of whom were laid off for corruption and inefficiency during the current Puntland government’s tenure. The former finance minister, Mohamed Ali Yusuf ‘Gaagaab’, leads the pack and has thrown his support behind Gen. Samatar who was the first candidate to announce his aims to run for the non-existent 2013 Puntland elections.

This will certainly clear up the many rumors that have been flying around the state of Puntland regarding the supposed elections that were set for 2013. Just yesterday, a new presidential hopeful announced his candidacy for Puntland office in the Mudug Province, despite the region being one of the key new support bases of the current President.

It’s not clear yet what the opposition plans to do about this latest development, but as always we’ll report on the latest events as they happen.
