At least six people were feared dead after a series of blasts ripped through Landhies Road near the Country Bus Station in Nairobi Saturday.

Twenty others were rushed to hospital suffering injuries following the blasts suspected to have been caused by grenades.

Nairobi provincial police boss Anthony Kibuchi, who rushed to the scene after the blasts, confirmed the deaths and said police would get to the bottom of the attacks.

Police said that the four explosives were thrown out of a moving vehicle over a stretch of about 100 metres. The vehicle is believed to have sped off towards Eastlands although witnesses were vague about the description of the vehicle since the attacks occurred after darkness had set in.

The blasts caused a scare with those who escaped unhurt scampering for cover as police and rescue services rushed to the scene to take the injured to hospital.

By 9 p.m. the Kenyatta National Hospital had received up to 20 casualties who were undergoing treatment for various injuries, Kenyatta National Hospital spokesman Simon Ithai said.

The blasts came hours after Kenya Defence Forces spokesman Colonel Cyrus Oguna cautioned Kenyans to remain vigilant as troops pursue Al-Shabaab militia inside Somalia.

At a news conference in Nairobi Saturday, Col Oguna said Al-Shabaab remnants were out to cause disharmony between the forces and the local community and urged the locals to notify security agents on suspicious people and those visiting the refugee camps.

Deputy police spokesman Charles Owino also urged Kenyans to be more vigilant, saying that though the security agents were alert, the threat was still real.

The incident is the third to rock the city centre since Kenya went into Somalia in pursuit of the Al-Shabaab militia on October 16 last year.

If this is claimed by AS,It was expected of them. Its a war after all, nothing surprising.Kenya craned their neck into Somalia affairs and now they have to deal with it.Don't take AS threats as a weasel-word...if they say they will attack, they will do it...Now the circle continues and the loosers will be Somalis

Somalia’s al-Shabaab Denies Responsibility for Kenya Bomb Attack

Wednesday, March 14, 2012

Somalia’s al-Qaeda-linked al- Shabaab militia denied responsibility for a grenade attack in neighboring Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, three days ago that killed seven people.

“Contrary to the specious allegations of the Kenyan government, Harakat al-Shabaab al-Mujahideen bears no responsibility whatsoever for the turbulence that reigns over the country,” the militia said in an e-mailed statement today.

Four people are still missing and 52 people are in the hospital after the March 10 blasts in which hand grenades were thrown from a moving vehicle at passengers waiting at a bus station on the outskirts of Nairobi’s city center, the Kenya Red Cross said on its website today. Police suspect “sympathizers of al-Shabaab” were responsible for the attack, Charles Owino, deputy spokesman for the Kenyan police, said on March 11.

Al-Shabaab threatened to carry out attacks in Kenya after the East African nation deployed its army in southern Somalia in mid-October to fight the militants. The rebel group has waged a campaign since 2007 to topple Somalia’s United Nations-backed government and establish an Islamic state.

Two weeks after the Kenyan incursion began, one person died and at least 20 were injured in two separate bomb blasts in Nairobi that the government said were inspired by al-Shabaab.

Al-Shabaab previously “cautioned the Kenyan government and warned of cataclysmic consequences should Kenya continue to pursue the belligerent path of invasion,” the group said today. “The rampant insecurity that now prevails in the streets of Kenya, and the wave of public anxiety therein, conspicuously foreshadows the perilous turn of events ahead.”

The U.S. Embassy in Kenya today condemned the attack and urged travellers to be aware of security concerns in the country.

“We applaud Kenyan efforts to bring to justice those who perpetrated this cowardly act of violence and will continue to cooperate closely with Kenyan authorities to combat terrorism in Kenya and the region,” the embassy said.
