March 9, 2011 (ADDIS ABABA) – Police in Ethiopia have arrested at least 130 people who are suspected of involvement in burning down dozens of churches near Jimma town in Ethiopia’s western Oromia region, where Muslims are the majority.

The arson of dozens of churches and homes in a Christian area of the Asendabo district in Jimma occurred after a Christian allegedly desecrated a copy of Muslim holy book, the Koran, by tearing it up.

Sources from the area said that at least one person was killed and thousands of Christians have reportedly fled since the attacks erupted few days ago.

Police said it has pressed charges against the 130 suspects and said they were pursuing many others.

Over one thousand people are are said to have been engaged in the attacks, which according to sources, also has led to the burring down of 59 churches and at least 28 homes of Christians.

According to Jimma residents over 4,000 Christians have fled their homes in fear.

Ethiopia is about 60 percent Christian and 40 percent Muslim however such incidents of violence between the different religious communities are relatively rare.

It might work, Yemen is poor aswell but as you can see there are demonstrations everywhere. Only one person needs internet, he tells his friends, they tell theirs, they also tell their parents who call others and talk about it etc. Only place it won't work is the Somali tuulos, But Harar, Jijiga, Dirdawa and Amhara towns might work inshallah.

The Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) called on the Ethiopian youth from all ethnicities and religions to unite and overthrow the government of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, in a statement the organization announced online and via its radio program that reaches millions of people inside Ethiopia. Ethiopians need to learn from the North African countries of Tunisia and Egypt to set off what the OLF called a “liberation revolution.” It is “the obligation and historical responsibility of all the peoples in Ethiopia to struggle and revolt in unison against their common enemy- the TPLF (Meles) regime- and remove it from power” said the OLF.

The organization called the reports of economic growth in Ethiopia a “fiction” and the ethnic federalism system a “sham.” In its recent radio program, the OLF said even if there was economic growth in Ethiopia, it is useless without democratic institutions and rights. The organization said middle-income countries like Egypt and wealthy nations like Bahrain are witnessing a revolution because people want liberty and political freedom. “In the absence of human liberty, political and democratic rights of the people, talking about unity, collective development and peace is empty rhetoric and deception,” it argued.

On its radio program, the OLF lamented that the WEST has failed to listen to the voice of Ethiopian people. “Until Finfinne (Addis Ababa) becomes the next Tunis or Cairo, their ears will not listen,” it added. But the West will be forced to listen if the Ethiopian youth unite and remove the government: as “most of the superpower countries, the hitherto supporters and handlers of the tyrannical regimes, were forced to quickly abandon their darlings and side with the revolting people” in Egypt and Tunisia. OLF’s radio program broadcasts mainly in Afan Oromo. However, the OLF also broadcasts in Amharic as it is the other language used by many Oromos who are ethnically mixed or culturally assimilated with ethnic Amharas over the centuries. During its recent radio program, the OLF said there will never be long-term solution and change in the country “until Ethiopia’s two main ethnic groups unite.”

The OLF also pleaded the government’s supporters to be on the “right side of history.” It said “the sons and daughters of the peoples of Ethiopia, who are members of the dictatorial TPLF regime’s armed, police and security forces and who are serving, consciously or unconsciously, to prolong the reign of the dictatorial brutal regime, should realize that they are committing unforgettable and unforgivable crimes against their own people, and now is the time to correct your hitherto positions and stand with your people.” In response to critics, the Meles government said the revolts that occurred in Egypt will not happen in Ethiopia. According to Meles, even though the economies in north Africa are bigger than in Ethiopia, his government has given hope and optimism for the youth with a faster growing economy and a lower cost of living.

However, the largest private English newspaper in Ethiopia, Addis Fortune, disagreed with the government’s claims and gave a strong warning in its latest editorial. According to the newspaper, there is a high level of unemployment and a rising cost of living in Ethiopia. While the newspaper praised the Meles government for building the nation’s public infrastructure, it said the ruling party still holds “a near complete control of the political infrastructure” and it must “build institutions and alternative leadership, before it becomes too late.” “A society that is not expressing itself in a peaceful manner has deeply buried problems that explode when it is fitting” warned the newspaper.

Opposition officials in Ethiopia have contrasting views on revolution in Ethiopia. Vice president of the Unity for Democracy and Justice (UDJ) opposition party and Medrek, Dr. Negasso Gidada said a revolution does not need a strong opposition party to succeed as long as the youth organize themselves locally. Some opposition officials however disputed the benefit of a revolution in Ethiopia. Former MP Lidetu Ayalew says Egypt now faces an uncertain future and revolutions do not always translate to democracy. “I do not think the changes we desire, change to a democratic system, can be attained via revolution,” claimed the Ethiopian Democratic Party (EDP) president Lidetu Ayalew.

Ethiopian protesters representing the Network Against Injustice and Repression in Ethiopia gathered outside Parliament today to condemn the brutal regime of Meles Zenawi, while inside Parliament, MP for Tewkesbury, Laurence Robertson - who claimed the greatest amount of Parliamentary expenses in 2009 - was sponsoring a dinner party supposedly in the name of celebrating Ethiopian culture.

Robertson's close ties to the Ethiopian dictator have given great cause for concern by those campaigning for human rights and dignity in Ethopia - a repressive state which commits acts of torture, brutality and extra-judicial murder against its own citizens. Zenawi is accused of kidnapping, imprisoning and murdering his opponents. During protests last year Zenawi's troops turned machine guns on protesting students in Addis Abbaba University. Thousands of protesters were jailed in November after two days of political unrest over alleged vote-rigging in elections last May, claiming the lives of at least 46 people. Similar protests last June led to the deaths of a further 42 students.

Though most of the 77 million people living in the hell that is modern Ethiopia under the Zenawi regime live on much less than 50 pence a day, Ethiopia receives just over £1 billion a year in aid, making it one of the largest recipients of foreign aid in Africa, but the regime spends a large percentage of its national budget on armaments and weapons. It is also believed that Zenawi and his corrupt officials have directed decades of foreign aid straight into their own bank accounts.

Recently Meles Zenawi has sent mercenaries to Libya to support the murderous campaign against Gaddafi's opponents.

Bisha May 28( Ginbot 20), is when he came to power and people are forced to come out to celebrate every year but if the uprising plans go as planned it will turn out a huge force against him.

The money, guns and power that Meles and his TPLF has are not more powerful than what people can accomplish if they unite around the God-given principles of morality, love, justice and respect towards others. They do not have to believe in one person, one leader, one political party, one tribe, one religion or one organization in order to plant that beautiful garden of which they dream

Besides, the Meles of today is like someone trying to maintain his balance while standing on a table with loosened legs. Those legs, made up of his cronies, are rotting from the inside from their corrupt and abusive practices. If someone kicks a table leg or if the weight on the table keeps getting heavier from the 20 years of abuses against the Ethiopian people, the table will collapse and suddenly, the whole thing will be over.

Ethiopians said using Facebook to plan anti-government protests

BBC Monitoring Africa

March 23, 2011

At a time when Ethiopians are exchanging information on a Facebook page entitled “Yedel Qen [Victory Day, in Amharic]” and “Beka [Enough]” urging them to take to the streets on 20 Ginbot [28 May 2011] and protest against the government, the Meles Zenawi regime has started taking action.

According to sources, the government has deployed up to three security personnel in every internet cybercafe, especially in Addis Ababa, to deal with the situation. It has been learnt that these security personnel have been ordered to file their reports every evening with the Government Communication Affairs Office, which is run by [Minister] Mr Bereket Simon.

Meanwhile, the government in a bid to divert the attention of the people is disseminating news on state-owned media on the dispute with Eritrea.

In an interview with the [privately-owned Paris-based] Sudan Tribune, Prime Minister Meles revealed a plan by the government to increase the defence budget. Based on the interview, analysts are saying that the government is planning to move against any public protests.

According to a source who sought anonymity, the recent increase of printing costs by 50 per cent by government printing presses [which dominate the Ethiopian media scene] is connected with plans to deal with any protests. He said the increase is meant to ensure that the people do not get adequate information and also undermine the private press.

The agitation which started on Facebook however continues, and so far over 11,000 people have joined the movement.
