Shirk (associating partners with Allah)?

Recommended Posts

Innalhamdulllah...

The study of Tawheed cannot be considered complete without a careful analysis of its opposite, Shirk. Some mention of Shirk has already been made in the Tawheed page and examples of it have been given to illustrate how Tawheed may be obliterated. However, in this Page Shirk will be looked at as a separate topic whose grave importance Allaah has attested to in the Qur'aan,

Shirk in Ruboobeeyah

This category of Shirk refers to either the belief that others share Allaah's Lordship over creation as His equal or near equal, or to the belief that there exists no Lord over creation at all. Most religious systems fall into the first aspect of Shirk in Ruboobeeyah while it is the philosophers and their man-made philosophies who tend to fill the second aspect.

A) Shirk by Association

Beliefs which fall under this sub-category are ones in which a main God or Supreme Being over creation is recognized, however His dominion is shared by other lesser gods, spirits, mortals, heavenly bodies or earthly objects. Such belief systems are commonly referred to by theologians and philosophers as either monotheistic (having one God) or polytheistic (having more than one God). According to Islaam, all of these systems are polytheistic and many represent various degrees in the degeneration of divinely revealed religious systems all of which were originally based on Tawheed.

B) Shirk by Negation

This sub-category represents the various philosophies and ideologies which deny the existence of God either explicitly or implicitly. That is, in some cases God's non-existence is stated (Atheism), while in other cases His existence is claimed, but the way in which He is conceived actually denies His existence (Pantheism).

Shirk in al-Asmaa was-Sifaat

Shirk in this category includes both the common pagan practice of giving Allaah the attributes of His creation as well as the act of giving created beings Allaah's names and attributes.

Shirk In al-'Ebaadah

In this category of Shirk, acts of worship are directed to other than Allah and the reward for worship is sought from the creation instead of the Creator.

Ar-Riyaa

Riyaa is the practise of performing any of the various forms of worship in order to be seen and praised by people. This sin destroys all the benefits that lie in righteous deeds and brings on the one who commits it a serious punishment. It is particularly dangerous, because it is natural for man to desire and enjoy the praise of his fellow men. Doing religious acts to impress people or in order to be praised by them is, therefore, an evil which deserves man's utmost caution. This danger is really significant to the believers whose goal is to make all of the acts of their lives religious acts dedicated to God

Ash-Shirk al-Akbar (Major Shirk)

This form of Shirk occurs when any act of worship is directed to other than Allaah. It represents the most obvious form of idolatry which the prophets were specifically sent by Allaah to call the masses of mankind away from. This concept is supported by Allaah's statement in the Qur'aan

"Surely we have sent to every nation a messenger saying, worship Allaah and avoid Taaghoot (false gods)"

Taaghoot actually means anything which is worshipped along with Allaah or instead of Allaah. For example, love is a form of worship which, in its perfection, should only be directed to Allaah. In Islaam, the love of God is expressed by total obedience to Him. It is not the type of love which man naturally feels toward creation; towards parents, children, food, etc. To direct that type of love towards God is to lower Him to the level of His creation which is Shirk in al-Asmaa was-Sifaat. Love which is worship is the total surrender of one's will to God. Consequently, Allaah told the Prophet (saws) to tell the believers:

Ash-Shirk al-Asghar (Minor Shirk)

Mabmood ibn Lubayd reported, "Allaah's messenger (saws) said: "The thing I fear for you the most is ash-Shirk al-Asghar (minor shirk)." The companions asked "Oh! messenger of Allaah, what is minor Shirk?" He replied "Ar-Riyaa (showing off), for verily Allaah will say on the Day of Resurrection when people are receiving their rewards, 'Go to those for whom you were showing off in the material world and see if you can find any reward from them.'

Mahmood ibn Lubayd also said, "The Prophet (saws) came out and announced, 'O people, beware of secret Shirk!' The people asked, 'O messenger of Allaah, what is secret Shirk?' He replied, 'When a man gets up to pray and strives to beautify his prayer because people are looking at him; that is secret Shirk.'

It seems that our discussion has been interupted by others who also seem to have issues with the 'salafi's'.

I appreciate the limited time you have but i would appreciate you clarifying the positionon Ahad narrations of Quran and how they were not accepted.

On a more related note on this thread, what category would ruling by other than what Allah (swt) has revealed?

An interesting opinion i was made aware of the other day "there is no tawheed nor obedience except when there is an amir", what would your reply be to this?

Assalafi where did you acquired this power that you're kickingthe people out of the Islam.

did you forgot Ahlu sunna wal jamaca, assalafiyah, etc are also innovations as well as akhwaan, tabligh, sufiyah etc if we use your short-minded standard.

These names are just operational names in which the muslims are working together and helping each other to spread the Da'wa and each group has negatives and many positives except your group who see themselves as ANGELS and see others as DEVILS.

and the biggest disease that affects the heart is CUJUB which is the disaese that destroyed your group and splitsed several groups each group claims that they're the best and others are Ahlil bid'a enz.

So, as i told you b4 you can't spread your disease in this site as long as i'm here.

From that which has been established in the Sharee’ah (prescribed law) is that mankind was – in the beginning – a single nation upn true Tawheed, then Shirk (directing any part or form of worship, or anything else that is solely the right of Allaah, to other than Allaah) gradually overcame them. The basis for this is the saying of Allaah – the Most Blessed, the Most High:

Ibn ’Abbaas – radiyallaahu ’anhu – said:

“Between Nooh (Noah) and Aadam were ten generations, all of them were upon Sharee’ah (law) of the truth, then they differed. So Allaah sent Prophets as bringers of good news and as warners.”

Ibn ’Urwah al-Hanbalee (d.837 H) – rahimahullaah – said:

“This saying refutes those historians from the People of the Book who claim that Qaabil (Cain) and his sons were fire-worshippers.”

“This saying refutes those historians from the People of the Book who claim that Qaabil (Cain) and his sons were fire-worshippers.”

Firstly: His (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) saying that he related from his Lord (Allaah): “I created all my servants upon the true Religion (upon Tawheed, free from Shirk). Then the devils came to them and led them astray from their true Religion. They made unlawful to people that which I had made lawful for them, and they commanded them to associate in worship with Me, that which I had sent down no authority.”

Secondly: His (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) saying: “Every child is born upon the fitrah [5] but his parents make him a Jew or a Christian or a Magian. It is like the way an animal gives birth to a natural offspring. Have you noticed any born mutilated, before you mutilate them?” Aboo Hurayrah (radiyallaahu ’anhu) said: Recite if you wish: “Allaah’s fitrah with which He created mankind. There is to be no change to the creation (Religion) of Allaah.” [sooratur-Room 30:30]

After this clear explanation, it is of the utmost importance for the Muslim to know how Shirk spread amongst the believers, after they were muwahhideen (people upon Tawheed) Concerning the saying of Allaah – the most perfect – about the people of Nooh:

“And they have said: You shall not forsake your gods, nor shall you forsake Wadd, nor Suwaa‘, nor Yaghooth, nor Ya’ooq, nor Nasr.” [soorah Nooh 71:23]

It has been related by a group from the Salaf (Pious Predecessors), in many narrations, that these five deities were righteous worshippers. However, when they died, Shaytaan (Satan) whispered into their people to retreat and sit at their graves. Then Shaytaan whispered to those who came after them that they should take them as idols, beautifying to them the idea that you will be reminded of them and thereby follow them in righteous conduct.

Then Shaytaan suggested to the third generation that they should worship these idols besides Allaah – the Most High – and he whispered to them that this is what their forefathers used to do!!! So Allaah sent to them Nooh (’alayhis-salaam), commanding them to worship Allaah alone. However none responded to his call except a few. Allaah – the Mighty and Majestic – related this whole incident in Soorah Nooh.

Ibn ’Abbaas relates: “Indeed these five names of righteous men from the people of Nooh. When they died Shaytaan whispered to their people to make statues of them and to place these statues in their places of gathering as a reminder of them, so they did this. However, none from amongst them worshipped these statues, until when they died and the purpose of the statues was forgotten.

Then (the next generation) began to worship them.” [7] The likes of this has also been related by Ibn Jareer at-Tabaree and others, from a number of the Salaf (Pious Predecessors) – radiyallaahu ’anhum.

In ad-Durral-Manthoor (6/269): ’Abdullaah Ibn Humayd relates from Aboo Muttahar, who said: Yazeed Ibnul-Muhallab was mentioned to Aboo Ja’far al-Baaqir (d.11H), so he said: He was killed at the place where another besides Allaah was first worshipped. Then he mentioned Wadd and said: “Wadd was a Muslim man who was loved by his people. When he died, the people began to gather around his grave in the land of Baabil (Babel), lamenting and mourning. So when Iblees (Satan) saw them mourning and lamenting over him, he took the form of a man and came to them, saying: I see that you are mourning and lamenting over him.

So why don't you make a picture of him (i.e. a statue) and place it in your places of gatherings so that you maybe reminded of him. So they said: Yes, and they made a picture of him and put in their place of gathering; which reminded them of him. When Iblees saw how they were (excessively) remembering him, he said: “Why doesn't every man amongst you make a similar picture to keep in your own houses, so that you can be (constantly) reminded of him.” So they all said “Yes.”

So each household made a picture of him, which they adored and venerated and which constantly reminded them of him. Aboo Ja’far said: “Those from the later generation saw what the (pevious generation) had done and considered that...to the extent that they took him as an ilaah (diety) to be worshipped besides Allaah. He then said: “This was the first idol worshipped other than Allaah, and they called this idol Wadd.”

Thus the wisdom of Allaah – the Blessed, the Most High – was fufilled, when He sent Muhammad (sallallaahu ’alayhi wa sallam) as the final Prophet and made his Sharee’ah the completion of all divinely Prescribed Laws, in that He prohibited all means and avenues by which people may fall into Shirk – which is the greatest of sins. For this reason, building shrines over graves and intending to specifically travel to them, taking them as places of festivity and gathering and swearing an oath by the inmate of a grave; have all bee prohibited.

All of these lead to excessiveness and lead to the worship of other than Allaah – the Most High. This being the case even more so in an age in which knowledge is diminishing, ignorance is increasing, there are few sincere advisors (to the truth) and Shaytaan is co-operating with men and jinn to misguide mankind and to take them away from the worship of Allaah alone – the Blessed, the Most High.

Taken from 'Jawaab al-Kaafi of ibn al-Qayyim'

It is necessary to know that performing sins is detrimental and harmful to the servant. The harm that sins cause to the heart is comparable to the differing levels of harm that various types of poison cause to the body. Indeed is there a single evil that occurs in the world or will occur in the Hereafter (i.e. entering Hell) except that its cause is sin?

What caused our parents to be ejected from Paradise – the land of delight, felicity and joy, to the land of pain, misery and affliction?

What caused Iblees to be ejected from enjoying the company of the Angels to being debased and cursed? What caused his outward and inward form to be disfigured such that he took on the most vile of features and his inner features even worse? What caused him to become distant (from Allaah) after being close, being under the Mercy (of Allaah) to being under His curse, from being beautiful to being ugly, from being in Paradise to being in the blazing Fire, from being a believer to being a disbeliever, from being the friend of Allaah to being His greatest enemy, from being a person devoted to the glorification of his Lord to being a person of kufr, shirk, lies and shameful deeds, from wearing the raiment of faith to wearing the raiment

What caused the inhabitants of the earth to be drowned to such an extent that the water rose above the highest peaks?

What caused the wind to rage over the people of Aad until the men could be seen lying dead as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees? Their land, homes and animals were destroyed and they remain a lesson for all who follow until the Day of Judgement.

What caused the people of Thamud to be destroyed by the awful cry such that their very hearts stopped beating and they were killed to the last of them?

What was it that caused the city of Lut to be raised so high that the Angels could hear the whining of their dogs and then its being turned upside down and everything being destroyed? Then He followed this up by

What was it that caused Pharaoh and his people to be drowned and their souls to be presented with Fire day and night, so the bodies were drowned and the souls burnt?

What was it that caused Qaaroon, his family, wealth and property to be swallowed by the earth?

What was it that caused the nations that succeeded Nuh to be destroyed?
