Somalia: Govt. soldiers killed in repel attack

Insurgents have killed three Somali government soldiers and wounded three others in ambush attack on military base around Barakaat cemetery in northern outskirt of Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, witnesses said on Monday.

 

According to the local residents, the suspected Islamic militants attacked the base of the Somali troops on Sunday night where they captured the camp but later retreated after the government soldiers received reinforcement troops.

 

The dead soldier was reported to have included the army commander. The wounded were admitted to the Medina hospital in south of the capital.

 

The army commanders declined to comment on the casualty on their side but independent sources confirmed Somalinet that three soldiers died and three others wounded in the battle.

 

Reports also say that death and injury casualty on the repel side but it is not verified the casualty figure.

 

In the last night’s fighting, the insurgents were reported to have seized a battlewagon and then burnt it on the spot.

 

This morning the situation was quiet but the Somali troops along with the Ethiopian forces are conducting a joint search operations around the area of the last night’s attack.

 

They began house-to-house search in the villages to pursue those who were behind the attack. No one was arrested and no weapon was found in the operation so far.

 

Meanwhile, hundreds of additional Ethiopian troops with tanks have been arriving in the capital for the past couple of days to replace the former forces who will return home.

 

Some reports say that the Ethiopian troops want hand over the control of the capital to establish the security alone.
