Simply, the locals can spot the malefactors and peace saboteurs from the crowd. With the local's help, I think the government will make big strides in subsiding the sporadic violence that only targets civilians and their enclaves in which the insurgents suspect of containing TFG police, army, and officials.

 

The local residents have come to terms with these blood thirsty insurgents and felt deeply it is them where the problem lies but not the government that is striving to promote peace and resuscitate the functions of state organs.

Mogadishu residents set up vigilante groups to counter insurgents

 

Some of the neighbourhoods in Mogadishu have for the first time started own-mobilization which is aimed at confronting groups engaged in launching mortars during the night, targeting the government troops.

 

The neighbourhoods have so far refused to be used as the launching pad for the attacks include; Tawakal of Yaqshid District; Gubta, Hamar Jadid of Wardeegley District, and MBC of Hodan District.

 

Ahmad Hirsi Muhammad, one of the intellectuals living in MBC, Hodan District, and one of the mobilizers of such vigilante groups, has commented on the program and how it had began. He confirmed that they have deployed different bands of vigilante groups in various streets within the neighbourhoods, to make it impossible for the insurgents to penetrate into the area without being noticed, and then start launching attacks.

 

Muhammad said "we have resolved to expand the [vigilante] force that used to exist in order to confront those who are carrying out attacks, creating discord, and also against anyone causing insecurity including robbers, those disturbing families, and those houses. We shall fight all of them. We remained vigilant the whole of last night. We blocked the [word indistinct] with stones and logs. We arranged the forces in twos and threes. Our aim is to defend ourselves against any vehicle or person causing problem amongst us. We are doing this for the sake of saving ourselves, our children and homes. That is how things are now."

 

This will be the first step for the public to note that it can deal with armed groups who are attacking the bases of the government troops and the Ethiopians, so that at the end, they, too can be saved from barrage of mortars being shelled by the Ethiopians/ government troops at night in response to the attacks.

Indohaadde also owns drug farms in the area under his control, including at Janaale, Shalambood, Qoryooley, Buulamarer and Kurtun Waarey; the exact number of farms is unknown, but Monitoring Group sources estimated that as many as 10 may be spread throughout his area. He is alleged to be dealing in marijuana (probably in the form of hashish).

 

84. Indohaadde's drug farms are a sophisticated operation involving irrigation

systems, fertilizers and herbicides. The workers on the farms are experienced in the drug-growing business and receive a good salary to maintain the high quality of the drugs. The drugs undergo a drying process and are packaged and concealed to avoid attracting attention. The product is graded: poorer-quality product is sent to Mogadishu and neighbouring countries for local consumption, while the higher quality product is put into trucks and transported to airstrips or the Marka seaport for further transport to the international market.
