Somali leaders receive rousing welcome at home

www.chinaview.cn 2005-02-25 03:35:10

NAIROBI, Feb. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Carnival mood greeted exiled Somalia President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed and Prime Minister Mohammed Ali Ghedi on their arrival Thursday in the Jowhar town for a week-long tour to the chaotic Horn of Africa nation.

Several thousand cheering and dancing Jowhar residents lined the 15-km stretch in the airfield in Jowhar, north of Mogadishu, to welcome the president's plane, waving Somali flags and posters of the president and prime minister as well as placards, reports reaching here said Thursday.

"Welcome to your country," "The people of Jowhar welcome the transitional federal government," "Long live the president and the prime minister," read some of the banners in the chanting throng.

The president and the prime minister are leading a high powered delegation who will be examining the possibility of relocating the interim government from Kenya.

It is unclear whether the leaders will visit the bullet-riddled Mogadishu during the visit because of security concerns.

The Somali leaders flew out from Nairobi, Kenya, in separate planes and touched down by 12:30 (0930 GMT) in Jowhar, 90 km north of the capital.

As he stepped off the plane, President Yusuf Ahmed reportedly received a 21-gun salute from single cannon as police in military uniform stood to attention.

The delegation then headed to the center of Jowhar, the provincial capital of the Middle Shabeele region, amid cheers and applause from the crowd lining the road.

Yusuf was expected to travel later to his home region of Puntland in northeast Somalia but was to follow a separate itinerary from Ghedi, who was to visit at least three other towns on his five-day tour -- Beletwern, Baidoa and Galkayo.

The planned trip by Ghedi and Yusuf marked the first time that they stepped on Somali territory since their election in October 2004.

Military experts from various African countries are currently in Somalia to assess the situation ahead of a proposed deployment of a peace mission there.

However, considerable divisions remain within the cabinet about whether they can base themselves in the unstable capital.

The regional Inter-governmental Authority on Development, whose members are Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda, sponsored two years of peace talks between various Somali clans and factions that culminated in the formation of the transitional federal government.

The process ended a 14-year period when Somalia lacked a functional central government.

The new government, which includes several faction leaders, has not been able to relocate from Nairobi to Somalia, citing security considerations. However, it has come under increasing pressure from the Kenyan government and western diplomats to do so. Enditem

Exiled leaders in visit to Somalia

Agencies

Thursday February 24, 2005

Somalia's president and prime minister today touched down in the war-torn country for the first time since their transitional government was formed in Kenya last year.

Reuters reported that the president, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, and the prime minister, Ali Mohamed Gedi, received a rapturous welcome from a crowd of thousands in the central town of Jowhar, around 50 miles north of the capital, Mogadishu. They are scheduled to tour the country for a week before returning to Kenya.

Somalia's transitional federal government was formed in October following 14 years of anarchy, during which the country, which has a population of seven million, had no effective central government.

Clan-based warlords overthrew the dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, but then turned on each other. Since then, two groups have formed effectively autonomous regions within Somalia, Somaliland and Puntland, while regions in the south have been fought over by rival factions.

Mr Gedi's government has remained in Kenya because heavily armed, clan-based militias make governing from Somalia too dangerous. The two men arrived in separate planes, leading a 47-member delegation - including eight cabinet ministers and several MPs - that will assess conditions for relocating the government and parliament.

When Mr Yusuf arrived, he received a 21-gun salute from a lone man with a cannon.

Onlookers danced and sang traditional songs, while others waved placards bearing slogans calling for peace, pictures of the president and prime minister, and flags. Shops and schools in Jowhar were closed for the occasion, and witnesses said many people had travelled from neighbouring villages for the festivities.

"The president is here, and he is going to stay here tonight," an aide for Mr Gedi told Reuters. Neither Mr Gedi nor Mr Ahmed the prime minister nor president were scheduled to visit Mogadishu, which is considered

Somalia PM, president arrive home from Kenya to hero's welcome

Thu February 24, 2005 2:47 PM GMT+02:00

By Mohamed Ali Bile

JOWHAR, Somalia (Reuters) - Somalia's president and prime minister arrived in their homeland on Thursday for the first time since their new government was formed in Kenya, winning a hero's welcome from thousands of cheering onlookers.

The Transitional Federal Government, tasked with bringing order to a country broken by 14 years of strife between rival clan-based warlords, has remained in Kenya since its formation at peace talks last year.

The meet-the-people tour by Prime Minister Mohammed Ali Gedi and President Abdullahi Yusuf had been due to leave on Wednesday but was delayed because of transport problems.

Witnesses said the pair arrived in separate planes in the central town of Jowhar, just north of the capital Mogadishu, on Thursday and were due to visit other parts of Somalia in the next few days.

A throng of onlookers danced and sang traditional songs, while waving placards bearing slogans for peace, pictures of the president and prime minister and flags, witnesses said.

All the shops and schools in Jowhar were closed for the occasion, and witnesses said many people had come from neighbouring villages for the festivities.

"The president is here and he is going to stay here tonight," an aide for Gedi told Reuters by phone from Jowhar.

Several teams from Gedi's fledgling administration have made visits home from Kenya this year to assess security and prepare for their eventual return to the lawless Horn of Africa nation.

Gedi intends to visit at least four towns in south and central Somalia on an eight-day tour for talks with elders, women's groups, businessmen and religious leaders.

Diplomats say they expect the team to assess security in various regions and to visit the capital Mogadishu, Somalia's single most dangerous place.

After Gedi's return to Kenya the government would decide where it should be based and where African Union troops should be deployed. Officials say Mogadishu may be too dangerous initially.

The government, Somalia's 14th attempt at effective central administration since 1991, is trying to arrange sufficient protection to enable it to establish its authority and begin disarmament of the country's many militias.

Yusuf has asked African and Arab states to supply 7,500 peacekeepers to help disarm militiamen roaming the capital.

Oh, he (Mohamed Dheere admin) shouldn't have. Abdullahi Yusuf must be blushing.. :D

Seriously, good to know the so-called threats against Ghedi's landing in Jowhar were false. All reports indicate that NO ONE had guns within the city. That, my friend, has the semblance of a capital.
