Somalia: Puntland leader returns home as elders issue warning

20 May 20, 2008 - 7:17:03 PM

BOSSASO, Somalia May 20 (Garowe Online) - The president of Somalia's Puntland regional government returned home Tuesday after spending nearly two months overseas, officials said.

President Mohamud "Adde" Muse landed in the port city of Bossaso after his final departure from neighboring Djibouti, where he was welcomed by an assortment of Puntland government officials.

The Puntland leader visited capitals in Ethiopia, Kenya, Great Britain and Djibouti before returning home. He has not yet discussed his overseas trip with local media.

But Mr. Muse's return trip home coincides with emerging reports that interim Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf is secretly backing an initiative extending the one-year term for Muse's four-year governing mandate in Puntland. In Garowe, the capital of Puntland, a group of 50 traditional elders who represent local clans issued a strong message to the Adde Muse administration about widespread reports of a term extension.

According to elders from Nugal region, where Garowe is located, the Muse government's term in office ends in January 2009, when the elders urged the region' s presidential elections be held as scheduled.

The Nugal clan elders warned against the proposed one-year extension period for the Puntland administration, fearing consequences of disorder and others problems in the region.

That's what Garoweonlines intentions where. For others to believe it. Look at their website, they never mention anything about other presidential candidates. Wait until Faroole comes, and the coverage they give him.

Somalipride....Let's forget about others for sec and ignore the extension rumor.Lets judge Cadde on his merits. The man has as leader preformed terribly. On major issues like security, inflation, and social development, he did little.Puntland is lot worse today than when Yeey was in power. I understand all this is not entirely his fault, but the buck stops at the top. You can't keep on blaming others for his incompatency. Others took advantage the sitaution cuz he failed to exert his power as leader and exercise sound judgement when it comes to the matters of extreme importance. Puntland is limbing today and the only thing that's stopping from complete implosion is the will of the common man as well as the concern and the actions of the Culumma and tribal elders.

Where was he when things were coming apart?

The whole world is seeing a rescission first off. The price of oil is hurting everyone. With that being said. Between 2005 when President Cade started his term until Dec 06, when the war with the south began Puntland had very little trouble. The piracy, crime, all those things you are complaining about didn’t' exist. Every problem occurred when the war broke out. As any historian or politician, wars are costly on many factors. You are upset because the side you support was defeated. I believe your intentions are to see Puntland broken which would then hurt the TFG. Puntland has giving millions to the TFG and on top of soldiers as well. Go on google earth, and look at the airport being built in Bosasoo, with their meager funds. They even have a live stock quarantine they are building.

I've said it in another thread, don't think a government will come that will be more sympathtic to clan courts or any other movement bent on war. It won't happen in Puntland.

these sort of rumors only encourage corrupt leaders. If the peeps at garowe online are against the reelection of Cade Muuse, spreading rumors about the inevitability of his return might not be the best course of action.
