Real Talk: Somali dependence on NGO's and the diaspora

Recommended Posts

Meiji

As you all know by now, Somalis have become dependent on foreign NGO's and Somali Diaspora to the point that they have come lazy and have lost confidence in their own abilities.

The most ironic aspect about this tragic situation is that those who supposedly call themselves the ''administration'' of a given city or a region have outsourced basic services ,they should have provided themselves, to foreign NGO's and Diaspora community.

How many times have we heard socalled ''governors or mayors'' asking NGO's and the Diaspora to come to the rescue of the people and provide basic services which they failed to provide?

Since these administrations cannot provide basic services what legitimation of power do they have?

Discuss!

I thought the Diaspora are the native sons/daughters of the country and they are the first to help.

There are no natural resources to cover those basic needs. There are no proper taxation of the people. There are no other financial resources to cover those needs in most of those places.

Diaspora can't support you forever if you don't make your lazy behind get to work.

And who's responsibilities it is to implement a proper taxation system for the people? Diaspora?

Either get to work or the Diaspora will disown you very soon.

Diaspora can invest in their country, no discussion about that.

But the problem is that the Somalis back home look to Diaspora and NGO's whenever they face a problem instead of first tackling it themselves and whenever they need assistance they will get it.

In this particular case I quoted,

We can see that a town in central Somalia has desertification problems.

Through collective work the people of the town themselves can combat the desertification but instead the governor of the town requests for Diaspora and NGO's to solve the problem.

There are many examples but this particular one was today in the news.

Didn't you see this? He tried to do what he could and probably did with the help of the town's people, but the problem is so enormous that they can't tackle it by themselves anymore.

People in Somalia do whole a lot by themselves, since there is no proper government there are things they can't accomplished and need the extra help. It doesn't matter how that help comes in or where. Stop this blaming nonsense ninyahow.

''mar sii horreysay uu wax yar oo bacaad-celin ''

Wax Yar is not enough.

Ceeldheer town and people need to do more then ''wax yar''.

I know they can, they need only to discard this notion of ''NGO and Diaspora to the rescue''.

PS: This is not blaming but pointing out the societal ills we face. We need to name them and search for their solutions.

NGO have ruined Somalia and the people of Somalia. People dont want to do anything collective/community based because they think an NGO will come and do it.

Also, if well meaning person decided to help, they will all say he is getting the funding from some NGO and they will charge them more to rent hotels/cars.

I will go as far as to say the government needs to ban all NGOs, so that people can become resource full and self sufficient.

NGOs are the worst African plague; no wonder we are going nowhere (besides the exploding academic evidence base, one may refer to yet a new another new book "Sverige Afrika Kriegs" about the role of Swedish "humanitarian activities").

How could there be any legitimate sovereignity, any incentives as well as accountability between locals and administration when the most basic services are systematically outsourced to foreign entities with their own agendas?

For instance, on which account is it helpful to discourage private initiatives and essential qualified workers, such as nurses, from doing the work they are trained for (in return of a much more lucrative, bureaucratic position)?

Having said that, I do concur with all of you that we should only welcome fellow islamic NGOs with open arms and monitor others proselytising groups, openly privileging their own confessions in terms of staff recruitment, eg: the 7th adventist and other evangelical, church-based NGOs.

Strictly supervised NGOs for emergency needs (WHO, MSF or the UNHCR for short-term, urgent health responses, with their "educational programs" localized) should, as a matter of course, be tolerated for the short-term.

As for the diaspora, again self-aggrandizement and intra-Somalis competition seems more of a priority than purely rational efficiency and sense of priorities (among which education on the widespread ravages of Khat, Smoking & Western diets as well as artificial infant milk top the list, instead of "universities" everywhere or unsustainable and expensive hospitals instead of prevention and primary healthcare etc); among the few uncontroversial conributions are Islamic schools or water well drilling...

Another issue which is truelly disturbing is the fact that the socalled regional administrations not only fail to provide basic services and take care of the well-been of the people but also complain when NGO's dont tackle problems in the region they themselves should have tackled:

A few weeks ago, the Islamic administration of Hiiraan complained about the NGO's and their failure in helping those people who are struck by the drought and looming famine. Ironically, this basic task of salvaging the people in the region from drought and famine is their responsibility and not that of NGO's.

Today, theIslamic administration of Baay/Bakool is doing the same thing.
