According to a survey completed in 2009, only 70% of women with a live birth received antenatal care from a skilled provider in North Eastern Province compared to 90% nationally. Only 17% of births in North Eastern Province occur in a health facility, this is the lowest rate in the country. Over 40% of women who delivered at home in North Eastern Province said they did so because the health facility was too far away. The second most common reason was tht the facility wasn’t open. North Eastern Province also has the lowest vaccination rate in the country, with only 48% of children aged 12-23 months receiving all of the basic recommended vaccinations. Despite the low levels of vaccination coverage compared to the national level of 77%, improvements have been seen in North Eastern Province since 2003 when coverage was only 9%.
