The Eritrean Consul-General in the Southern Sudan’s capital, Juba, said his country was the first to support the principle of self-determination for the people of Southern Sudan. Alem Negash made the remarks during the celebration on Eritrean’s 17 years of independence, which was organized by the Eritrean community residing in Juba. He said self-determination is a recognized right of a people worldwide, saying Eritrea was the first IGAD-member country that supported the call for self-determination of the people of Southern Sudan in mid 1990s shortly after it gained independence from the rest of Ethiopia. Negash further commended the good relations between Southern Sudan and Eritrea. Commenting on the upcoming referendum due in seven months, he said it was the right of the people of Southern Sudan to go to polls in January next year to determine their future destiny between unity and separation. Speaking during the same occasion, the minister of Trade and Commerce and acting minister for Regional Cooperation, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, expressed his appreciation on behalf of the government for the bilateral cooperation between the two regions. Eritrea was part of Ethiopia until 1992 when it broke away and established its own independent state following majority vote for separation in a referendum. The country is currently among nearly 20 other countries in Africa, USA, Europe, Asia and Middle East that have opened their branches of embassies in Juba. The Government of Southern Sudan has recently stepped up its diplomatic contacts with different countries’ Special Envoys, urging them to support the conduct of the referendum and to possibly secure recognition of the region’s independence incase its people would vote for separation.

NAIROBI — Agence France-Presse's Somalia correspondent Mustafa Haji Abdinur has been awarded the CNN Multichoice African Journalist of the Year Award in the Free Press category. Abdinur, 28, who has been AFP's Mogadishu-based correspondent since 2006, was among several African journalists recognised at the ceremony in the Ugandan capital Kampala on Saturday. "Friends, I live in a country whose name has unfortunately become a synonym for lawlessness, where human life is not worth a lot and where press freedom simply does not exist," said Abdinur. He was chosen "for his work in Somalia including the 'Peace Journalism' initiative which he launched with the help of fellow Somali journalists earlier this year," organisers said. The CNN Multichoice Free Press Africa Award has previously been presented to the late Deyda Hydara from Gambia and the imprisoned Eritrean journalist Seyoum Tsehaye Musa Saidykhan. The CNN African Journalist of the Year Award was founded in 1995 by Edward Boateng and the late Mohamed Amin to recognise and encourage excellence in journalism throughout Africa. In November 2009, Abdinur won the Committee to Protect Journalists' (CPJ) International Press Freedom Awards.

Mogadishu, May 31, 2010 (BIN) –At least two people have been died and 10 others injured after fighting between Somali government troops backed by Ethiopian military and Al-Shabab militias erupted in Somali-Ethiopia border town, on Monday. The clashes erupted after the extremist militias attacked the government soldiers and Ethiopian military bases in Elberde town of Bakool region in south western Somalia. Residents told Before It’s News on phone that two civilians were wounded and three Somali government soldiers but there is no further confirmation of the death except reports say that two of the warring sides died in the clashes. Ibrahim Dere, Somali government officer in Elbarde town told the media that Al-Shabab, the Al-Qaeda proxy in Somalia attacked Somali government soldiers and Ethiopian troop’s bases in the town “The fighting was heavy, three of our soldiers were injured, and we are looking for further information of the causalities of the civilians,” he said. He adds that the town is under their control and residents confirmed to BIN. Ethiopia government denies that its military troops reentered Somalia after its troop withdrawal in early 2009 but Somali government officials and residents confirmed that they have bases in Elbarde town and helping the government soldiers.

It is part of the political development in Somaliland. When you have political parties, the governance system in place, national army and then an army group fighting for a region to secede ........ that is what you call a political maturity.
