Somalia’s Al Shabaab Warns People Against Using Drugs Offered By AMISOM Mogadishu, Somalia (AHN) - Somalia’s Al Qaeda-inspired group Al Shabaab has warned people against getting drugs from African Union peacekeepers in Mogadishu, an Al Shabaab official told reporters on Monday. Sheikh Ali Mohammed Hussein, the insurgent group's chairman of the Banadir region, said Mogadishans should not use medicine offered by AMISOM, claiming that the drugs may have been contaminated with the HIV virus. Hussein said AMISOM’s medicine came from an unnamed organization that he claimed wanted to spread the virus throughout the country. “We are telling the people not to use or visit AMISOM bases searching for drugs. Somali people must not be treated with them,” Hussein was quoted as saying. The Al Shabaab claims appear to be designed to placate the Al Qaeda terrorist network led by Osama bin Laden. Al Shabaab has ordered three international aid agencies--World Vision, Adventist Development and Relief Agency, and Diakonia--to stop serving in Somalia in two months, claiming they are "actively propagating Christianity" in the Horn of Africa country. Other aid organizations also have been warned against taking over the agencies' work, or action would be taken against them. Al Shabaab had already imposed a ban on more than 20 aid organizations, including United Nations and international aid agencies working in southern and central Somalia. HERE

Troop reinforcements in Somalia's semi-autonomous region of Puntland have been deployed to help rescue a government minister kidnapped by pirates. Ports Minister Said Mohamed Rageh is reportedly being held in the remote town of Jariban - a pirate stronghold. His convoy was ambushed twice on Friday - and he was taken captive on the second attempt. Analysts say the incident is a blow to the Puntland administration which has taken a hard line against piracy. The BBC's Ahmed Mohamed Ali in Garowe says two people were killed in the ambushes on Friday - one person on the pirates' side when security guards opened fire in the initial ambush and a guard in the evening attack. Negotiations for Mr Rageh's release are continuing with local elders, our reporter says. For the last five years, Puntland - the north-eastern Somali region that declared itself autonomous in 1998 - has been the hub of Somali piracy operations, particularly in the Gulf of Aden. Last month, a pirate ringleader was sentenced to death for killing the Pakistani skipper of a hijacked cargo ship. About half of Puntland's prison population is made up of pirates.
