  1. DJIBOUTI CITY, Somalia Sep 19 (Garowe Online) - The United Nations Special Representative for Somalia, Mr. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, held a press conference Friday in Djibouti where he discussed piracy and an Islamist militia’s threat to shut down Mogadishu's international airport. Speaking in French, Mr. Ould-Abdallah said leaders in Somalia's self-governing region of Puntland are directly linked to pirate gangs operating there. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, UN Special Envoy for Somalia "The Puntland leadership has made it easy for pirates to establish a base there [in Puntland]," the UN Special Envoy said, while alleging that ransom money collected by pirates "will be used to fund the 2009 presidential elections in Puntland." He indicated that piracy has worsened inflation across Somalia and threatens the security of Somalia's neighbors, including Ethiopia and Yemen. Further, the Envoy said the Islamist militant group al Shabaab's threat to shoot down airplanes attempting to land at Mogadishu's Aden Adde International Airport has a negative impact on the civilian population. "Mogadishu's airport belongs to all Somalis," he said, while underscoring that piracy and terrorism are part of the larger problem in Somalia, where "some groups oppose peace and stability." Puntland government leaders have not responded to the UN Special Envoy's serious allegations, but Mr. Ould-Abdallah said he will present these issues to Somali government and opposition delegates meeting in Djibouti for a joint decision which will be presented to the United Nations.

  4. MOGADISHU (AFP) — Nine Somali civilians were killed Friday when insurgents fire mortar shells on Mogadishu airport, drawing retaliatory fire from African peacekeepers, witnesses told AFP. The incident broke out minutes after a plane delivering goods for the African Union (AU) force stationed at the airport landed, in defiance of a three-day-old insurgent "ban" on using the facility. Insurgents fired several mortar shells at the airport but many missed their target, local residents said, adding that the AU forces fired shells back. "Two houses close to southern Mogadishu's K5 intersection were destroyed by mortar shells and seven dead civilians were found in the debris," said Ahmed Omar, a resident. Another witness gave the same death toll. "Five civilians were killed in a house near the Libyan embassy and two others died in a neighbouring house," said Bashir Abdullahi, adding that seven other civilians were wounded in this incidents. Several other witnesses said two civilians were also killed when mortar shells smashed into homes in the southern Holwadag area. "The insurgents did what they have been doing. They fired mortars shortly after a plane carrying our supplies landed, but there were no casualties," Baridgye Bahuko, spokesman for the AU mission in Somalia, said. "I don't think that the AU forces randomly fire at civilians in residential areas, though we have the right to defend ourselves from those who attack us," he added. Somalia's Al-Shebab movement earlier this week warned that all flights should cease as of September 16, arguing that the airport was an instrument of Ethiopia's military occupation of Somalia. Commercial activity at the airport has since stopped, despite government assurances that the radical Islamist militia did not have the means to impose a blockade on the airport. The airport is used for both commercial and military flights but is also the main base for the Ugandan contingent of the African Union peacekeepers, who were reinforced by Burundians earlier this year. With the war-torn Somalia's roads dotted with rogue checkpoints and freelance gunmen and its waters infested with pirates, traders have warned the airport's closure would only further stifle an already agonising nation. 5. MOGADISHU, Somalia Sep 19 (Garowe Online) - At least 12 people were killed Friday in Somalia's violent capital, Mogadishu, after the Islamist group al Shabaab launched mortars at Aden Adde International Airport, Radio Garowe reported. Another 35 people, mostly civilians, were wounded as insurgents and Somali government troops exchanged shells across Mogadishu's Howlwadaag district, according to medical contacts. A military plane transporting goods to African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) peacekeepers, who safeguard the airport, landed safely but attracted at least eight mortars that targeted the international airport. Capt. Barigye Bahoku, the AMISOM spokesman, confirmed to the media that insurgent mortars targeted the airport but caused no damage. Al Shabaab guerrillas issued a public warning earlier this week threatening to attack Mogadishu's airport if any airplane attempts to land. But al Shabaab's decision has been opposed by Islamic Courts officers, who are reportedly holding private talks to ease tensions. [ Full story] 'Revoked' Somali airline companies have not landed at Aden Adde International Airport since Monday, with various sources saying the airlines are avoiding al Shabaab's September 16 threat. But Somalia's interim government is very unhappy about the airliners' decision. On Friday, Mogadishu airport director Mohamud Sheikh Ahmed declared that the government has "formally revoked" the operating licenses of several airline companies. He specifically named Daallo Airlines, Jubba Airways, Africa Express and Gallad Airlines which made daily commercial flights to Mogadishu as loosing their license to land at Aden Adde International Airport. According to Mr. Ahmed, the government reached the decision after the airline companies "accepted the al Shabaab propaganda" and rejected the government's assurances that the airport is safe and open for business.

  14. DENPASAR (Reuters) - About 1,000 Balinese dressed in traditional sarongs rallied Wednesday to protest against a controversial anti-pornography bill that critics say could hurt local cultural traditions. The anti-smut bill aims to shield the young from pornographic material and lewd acts, but also contains provisions that could jail people for kissing in public and criminalize many forms of art or traditional culture that hinge on sensuality. Lawmakers in the world's most populous Muslim nation have so far stopped short of passing the bill which has been in parliament for over three years because of criticism it would threaten Indonesia's tradition of tolerance. But some political parties are hoping for its approval this month when the final draft is tabled in parliament. One Islamic party's lawmaker has said the bill would be a Ramadan gift. "We in Bali see the body as aesthetic, but the pornography bill sees the body as an object of sin," said Sugilanus, one of the protesters at the rally in Denpasar, capital of the predominantly Hindu island of Bali. Nude sculptures and paintings are common in culturally-rich Bali, which earns most of its income from domestic and international tourists. "Reject the pornography bill," some protesters shouted as they performed a sensual traditional dance while others carried banners saying, "The porn bill is not a gift but humiliation for the nation." Earlier this week, Bali's governor, Made Mangku Pastika, rejected the parliament plan for passing the contentious bill. Balinese lawmakers plan to go to Jakarta next week to pressure members of parliament to drop the controversial draft, Ida Bagus Putu Wesnawa, chairman of Bali's house representatives, said. "We strongly reject the implementation of the pornography bill and we urge all community elements not to allow regulations that potentially separate the nation to be issued," Wesnawa told the crowd. Illegal explicit material is available in Indonesia, and television programs regularly feature bared flesh and sexual innuendo. Lawmakers watered down the bill following criticism and street protests over the issue early last year. Critics say it could pave the way for vigilante groups to take the law into their own hands under a pretext of upholding morality. Militant Muslim groups in Indonesia, particularly since the fall of former president Suharto in 1998, have sporadically taken vigilante action against red-light areas or liberal publications deemed offensive.
  15. SYDNEY (Reuters) - An Australian pizza delivery man gave fast food a new meaning when he was caught, and fined, for driving 53 km (33 miles) over the speed limit. The 20-year-old man, driving on a provisional driver's license, said he was speeding because he was 20 minutes late with his delivery in the tropical northern town of Townsville. Police clocked him driving at 131 kms (82 miles) in an 80 kph (50 mph) zone on Saturday, but waited for him to deliver his pizza before booking him. On his return journey to the pizza shop, he was caught speeding at 133 km in the same zone. Police sergeant Brendan White said on Tuesday the delivery man, who was not named, was fined A$1520 (US$1,226) and lost his license for 15 months.

  22. Hackers break into Sarah Palin's e-mail account WASHINGTON - Hackers broke into the Yahoo! e-mail account that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin used for official business as Alaska's governor, revealing as evidence a few inconsequential personal messages she has received since John McCain selected her as his running mate. "This is a shocking invasion of the governor's privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these e-mails will destroy them," the McCain campaign said in a statement. The Secret Service contacted The Associated Press on Wednesday and asked for copies of the leaked e-mails, which circulated widely on the Internet. The AP did not comply. The disclosure Wednesday raises new questions about the propriety of the Palin administration's use of nongovernment e-mail accounts to conduct state business. The practice was revealed months ago — prior to Palin's selection as a vice presidential candidate — after political critics obtained internal e-mails documenting the practice by some aides. One person whose e-mail to Palin apparently was among those disclosed, Amy B. McCorkell, declined to discuss her correspondence. "I do not know anything about it," McCorkell said. "I'm not giving you any comment." Wired.com said McCorkell later confirmed that she did send the e-mail to Palin. Another of the e-mails apparently revealed Wednesday was an exchange in July with Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell discussing a talk show host who had been critical of Parnell. Parnell declined to discuss the matter. Palin herself used "gov.sarah" in one of her e-mail addresses, but the hackers targeted her "gov.palin" account. Her husband used "fek9wnr" in his address. "Fe" is the representation for iron, and "k9" is an abbreviation for canine. Todd Palin was the winner of the grueling Iron Dog snowmobile race, and "fek9wnr" also is Todd Palin's vehicle license tag in Alaska. It wasn't immediately clear how hackers broke into Palin's Yahoo! account, but it would have been possible to trick the service into revealing her password knowing personal details about Palin that include her birthdate and ZIP code. A hacker also might have sent a forged e-mail to her account tricking her into revealing her own password. McCorkell was appointed by Palin to an advisory board on issues involving alcohol and drug abuse. One of the leaked e-mails suggested McCorkell wrote to Palin on Sunday to say she was praying for Palin. "Don't let the negative press get you down!" the message said. (This version CORRECTS Corrects in 7th graf that hackers targeted 'gov.palin' account sted 'gov.sarah' account.)
