  1. In his motion to amend the conditions of Isse's detention Engh writes: "Mr. Isse will not be the last defendant indicted. The individuals who recruited him to go to Somalia have been targeted for prosecution. Once charged, they will face a life sentence. Recruiting young men to blow themselves up while killing the innocent at a crowded marketplace is a definition of evil. And this recruitment happened at a house of worship."
  2. Part 2 The men are the first to be publicly charged in the sweeping probe -- one of the most far-reaching U.S. counterterrorism efforts since 9/11. Special Agent E.K. Wilson said Tuesday that these initial indictments are just the "beginning of an ongoing investigation." Isse pleaded guilty April 17 to a single count of providing material support to terrorists. And this recruitment happened at a house of worship." The motion was denied. Engh has declined to comment on the case, other than to acknowledge that he represents Isse, citing national security rules. Stephen L. Smith, an attorney who has represented five or six people who testified before the grand jury investigating the case, said though many of the missing men spent time at Abubakar, he does not believe anyone in a leadership position there recruited men to fight for al-Shabaab, the Somali group with links to Al-Qaida. "There have certainly been questions along those lines," Smith said of the grand jury investigation. "But every client I have represented has not in any way suggested there was any nefarious exposure to this kind of stuff, this type of ideology, from the mosque." Isse's story According to documents filed by the U.S. Attorney, Isse was arrested at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on Feb. 24. He said he was on his way to Tanzania to participate in an internship with his uncle. He had previously left Minneapolis in December 2007 for Somalia, traveling as part of "an agreement with several other individuals from the Minneapolis area to travel to Somalia and fight against Ethiopian soldiers whom they believed to be occupying the country." Isse traveled with one Minneapolis man and met with two others in Dubai. While in Somalia, Isse "learned that his conspiracy was affiliated with al-Shabaab," the U.S. Attorney's office wrote. Al-Shabaab is considered a "militant jihadist organization" by federal officials that has waged war to impose Sharia, or strict Islamic law, in Somalia. Isse and the others lived in houses provided by al-Shabaab, trained with weapons and traveled and lived with other al-Shabaab members. One of those men was Shirwa Ahmed. Isse even spent a couple weeks helping build a training camp. After a week or two at the camp, the U.S. Attorney said, Isse decided he did not want to stay. He and another man from Minnesota left, while other Minnesotans stayed to continue their training. After visiting family members in Somalia, Isse returned to the U.S. in May 2008. Even after Shirwa Ahmed's death, Isse stayed in contact with "other individuals who had knowledge of the ongoing conspiracy to recruit al-Shabaab members from among the Somali-American population in Minneapolis," according to court papers. Aryan Isse, Abdifatah Isse's cousin, said the entire family was shocked to hear of his arrest. Isse, an engineering student in his home state of Washington, was "always one of the good kids," she said. "He never smoked, he never did anything." The family didn't even know Isse had been arrested until a few months ago, she said. Until then, they had frantically tried to find him. "When he came to America, he was willing to study to become somebody. He was willing to help his family, his brothers and sisters. Whoever talked him into this stuff, it's no good, because now he is paying the price," Aryan Isse said. Maruf's role Zakaria Maruf, one of the Somali men said to have been involved in recruiting others in Minneapolis, was killed last weekend in Mogadishu. It is not clear how he died. Somalis who grew up with Maruf recall an angry young man who seemed to mellow in recent years after getting involved at Abubakar as-Saddique, where he sometimes volunteered at mosque conventions. A community activist who works with Somali youth said that although Maruf was prone to fights, he "had a leadership presence where people used to follow him." Gandi Mohamed, who grew up in the same neighborhood as Maruf and who worships at Abubakar, said he doubts Maruf acted alone. Mohamed said Maruf was a hothead who often picked fights he couldn't win. Although "he did calm down and mature" in recent years, Mohamed said, Maruf lacked the "personality, intellect and temperament" to mastermind an extensive recruiting effort. "For me to go to Somalia right now, I would need my elders to get up there and make connections for me to be safe," he said. "For him to get there and be connected and be a leader in al-Shabaab, he'd have to have someone influential to make the connection for him.'' Staff writers Richard Meryhew and Allie Shah contributed to this report. James Walsh • 612-673-7428
  3. Court records detail Minnesota Somalis' path to terrorism Court records, and the cooperation of one of two Somali men charged, detail recruitment and training. By JAMES WALSH, Star Tribune Last update: July 15, 2009 - 7:28 AM First-ever details of Minnesota men training with terrorists in Somalia -- learning to fire weapons, building training camps -- came to light in court documents released Tuesday. One of the two Somali men indicted for providing support to those terrorists pleaded guilty months ago and has been cooperating with the FBI, according to those same documents. Papers filed by the attorney for Abdifatah Yusuf Isse, 25, of Seattle also provide the first clue to how Isse and other young Somalis were recruited to fight, saying he was approached "at a house of worship." The motion provides no other details about the place of recruitment. Up to 20 Twin Cities men of Somali descent have disappeared over the past two years, and many of them worshipped or socialized at Abubakar as-Saddique, the largest Somali mosque in Minneapolis. Farhan (Omar) Hurre, the mosque director, has consistently said that the mosque does not preach violence and didn't play a role in the disappearances. At least four of the missing men have died since returning to Somalia -- three since early June -- and community members say there are reports of other deaths. Isse, who has family in the Twin Cities, has admitted to investigators that he trained with terrorists in Somalia, traveled and stayed in houses with Shirwa Ahmed, the Minneapolis man who blew himself up in a suicide bombing last October in northern Somalia. Isse even helped construct a terrorist training camp, according to a previously sealed federal response to motions filed by his attorney, Paul Engh. The documents detailing Isse's admitted involvement in terrorist training were unsealed after the first appearance in court Monday by the other man indicted on charges of supporting terrorists, Salah Osman Ahmed, 26, of Brooklyn Park.
  4. Gabbal: You always have theories adeer. The fact is Puntland and its regions have many reformed Al-Itixad leaders they are integral part of the state and system and are thriving any sort of conflict would be against their vested interests. Also the failures of the fake Islamist groups in the south and the blood letting has oepend the eyes of the population to the importance of what they have. Puntland main issues are poverty and ignorance but the system has incorporated the elders and religious leaders one has to see Sheikh Abdulkadir Gacamay and the role he plays. So far Puntland has held up and its time it took the role as the main Somali republic instead of waiting for Mogadishu and other regions.
  5. Puntland is always a good host, but I also predict Faroole won't give them anything without getting what the state needs, which are are clear. Puntland won't be swayed by mere talk and titles.

  7. (CNN) -- The family of a Somali-American man who died in Somalia have said they want to know who is responsible for recruiting him to join an al Qaeda-linked Islamist insurgency. Militia soldiers hold weapons as they train to prepare an attack in Mogadishu earlier this month. 1 of 3 Jamal Bana is the third Somali-American from the city of Minneapolis to head to Somalia and die there. He is one of more than a dozen missing Somali-American men whose families believe have gone back to fight. "Someone must have put something in his mind," Omar Jamal of Minneapolis' Somali Justice Advocacy Center said at a Sunday news conference with Bana's family. "He must have been somewhat disillusioned and indoctrinated because he didn't have any clue about Somalia at all. So someone somewhere must be responsible for his disappearance." Watch as Bana's family seeks answers » The same day as the family's news conference, Somalia's president -- a former member of the Islamist movement himself -- issued a plea to Somali-Americans not to join the fight in his country. "I call on the Somali-American community not to send their youth to Somalia to fight alongside al-Shabaab," President Sheik Sharif Ahmed said on Sunday. "I am saying to those young men from abroad: 'Your families fled your home to America because of insecurity. You should not return here to ferment violence against your people.'" Al-Shabaab, a group that is on the U.S. government's terror watch list, remains entrenched in the northeast and sections of the south of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu. It has ties to al Qaeda and has recruited foreign fighters to join its battle to overthrow the Somali government. The U.S. government announced last month that it is providing weapons to Ahmed's government as it tries to quell the insurgency. Fighting has uprooted more than 200,000 people in Mogadishu since early May, according to the United Nations. Many of the missing Somali-Americans are believed to have left for Somalia when Ethiopian forces were still on the ground. The presence of these foreign forces was an outrage to most Somalis, and became a rallying cry of al-Shabaab. But the Ethiopians have now withdrawn. Bana, who was one of those who heeded the call to return to fight, was only 1 when his parents left Somalia and eventually brought him to the United States. The oldest of seven children, Bana was a top student at Washburn High School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was studying engineering at two area colleges before he went missing in November. On Saturday, his family learned of his fate: a photo of his body appeared on a Web site, a casualty of the ongoing conflict in Somalia. Jamal spoke for the family with one arm around Bana's distraught mother, who quietly wept, covering her face with her headscarf. The father was too upset to attend the news conference, Jamal said. The family is asking the United States government to help them bring his body back home. In October, Shirwa Ahmed, 27, a Somali-American believed to have been radicalized by al-Shabaab, traveled from Minneapolis to Somalia and blew up himself and 29 others. The incident -- the first-ever suicide bombing by a naturalized U.S. citizen -- raised red flags throughout the U.S. intelligence community and sparked an investigation by the FBI. Burhan Hassan, a 17-year-old Somali-American high school student in Minneapolis, went missing eight months ago around the same time as Bana. Last month, his family learned that he was killed in Somalia. Neither family has any idea why the young males left the United States -- where they came as young boys -- or who is responsible for their deaths. Bana's family believes he was being held against his will. "Only one time he placed a phone call (in mid-November), he didn't say much," Omar Jamal said. "He spoke as if he was being held hostage. He couldn't be speak freely. They asked him to cut the conversation short. "The mother was asking him, 'Where are you? Why did you (leave)?' He said, 'I cannot talk to you, I just called to tell you I'm here. I cannot tell you anything. I'll call you some other time. I'm sorry I cannot talk to you.'" E.K. Wilson, an FBI special agent and spokesman for the Minneapolis field office, could not confirm the exact number of missing Somali-American men or confirm the recent deaths, citing the agency's ongoing investigation. But he said the number of missing men believed to be in Somalia is "in the 10s." He said the possible recruitment of these men to fight alongside an al Qaeda-linked group is "a significant concern." Don't Miss Somalia urges Somali-Americans not to join rebels Obama: War a millstone around Africa's neck U.N.: Fighting in Somalia's capital sparks massive refugee exodus Kenya rejects call for military help in Somalia "Counterterrorism is our number one priority in the FBI and in this particular field division, and our efforts since 9/11 have been geared in that direction and with the goal of preventing future terrorist attacks," he told CNN in a recent interview. "So it is a significant concern and one that we're giving our highest priority." Since Shirwa Ahmed's death in October, Wilson said the FBI has further expanded its outreach program to the Somali-American community around the United States. So far, there is no indication that al-Shabaab is recruiting young men from Somali-American communities outside Minneapolis. Asha Ali and her husband Ali Yusuf Omar help resettle Somali refugees in the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. They spoke to CNN on Sunday shortly after news surfaced of Jamal Bana's death, and said they are baffled by what is going on in Minneapolis. "Of course I'm scared," Asha Ali said. "If that happened in Minneapolis, it could happen anywhere." Asha Ali works for Refugee Family Services and Ali Yusuf works for Georgia Somali Community, Inc. They have five children, a 14-year-old daughter and four sons ages 10, 12, 20 and 22. "I have seen mothers talking," Asha said, referring to what's going on in Minneapolis. "I open my eyes now more. I watch my kids more closely." The couple came to the United States in their 20s in 1982, and all five of their children were born in America. She said there have been no reports of any missing Somali-Americans among the tight-knit community which are centered in the towns of Stone Mountain and Clarkston, near Atlanta. Asha and Ali Yusuf attend various mosques, or masjids, in the Atlanta area -- which are the centers of the Somali-American community -- and say they all preach tolerance and demand that young people stay out of trouble. Asha said she cannot figure out what led the young men in Minneapolis to want to return to Somalia. "What is this 'al-Shabaab'? What does this word mean?" she said. Their fight against fellow Somalis, she said, does not make sense to many members of the expatriate community.

  10. Two French Security Advisers Abducted in Somalia 14 Jul 14, 2009 - 8:03:46 AM By Edward Cody Washington Post Foreign Service PARIS, July 14 -- Two French security advisers posing as journalists were abducted from their hotel in Mogadishu on Tuesday by Somali gunmen, according to the Foreign Ministry and reports from the chaotic Somali capital. The Foreign Ministry did not identify the two men or specify which branch of the French government had dispatched them to Somalia. But it said in an announcement that they were in Mogadishu on "an official mission" to assist the Western-backed government of President Sharif Ahmed in "security matters." A senior official in Ahmed's government told Agence France-Presse, the main French news agency, that the two men had arrived in Mogadishu nine days ago, invited by the Somali Defense Ministry to train "their counterparts in Somali intelligence agencies." The men were staying at the Sahafi Hotel International, which over the years has gained a reputation as headquarters for foreign correspondents covering the violence that has ripped Somalia apart in recent years. In more recent times, however, few Western journalists have ventured into Mogadishu, where the official police and army are weak, heavily armed factions often rule the streets and kidnapping is a constant danger. The hotel manager, Mohamed Mohamed, told news agencies that the two French abductees registered at the hotel as journalists on their arrival last week. He said a dozen armed men showed up Tuesday morning and, after disarming the hotel guards, searched the hotel door to door until they found their targets and bundled them off. France has had no diplomatic representation in Mogadishu since June 1993, when a U.N.-led effort to impose peace on Somalia's warring factions led to disaster. Since then, like many of its Western counterparts, the French government has handled its diplomatic business with Somalia from the French Embassy in Nairobi, the capital of neighboring Kenya. Some African and Western countries, including the United States, have backed Ahmed's transitional government against its Islamic opponents, largely out of fear that Somalia could provide safe haven to terrorist groups. But despite help from Ethiopia, he has been unable to assert firm control over the country, which harbors wanted terrorist figures and groups of pirates preying on vessels that pass through the Gulf of Aden. France's role in providing security assistance to his forces was not widely known in Paris. The abduction took place as France celebrated its National Day with a large military parade down the Champs Elysées and a garden party at the Elysée Palace, the official residence of President Nicolas Sarkozy. In a television interview for the occasion, Sarkozy went out of his way to praise the French military. He reminded viewers that his government has increased spending for modern military equipment, even though the manpower totals are being reduced. "The French army is professional, competent, devoted," he said. "It does an absolutely remarkable job." Source: Washington Post

  16. Let's be clear here Puntland state is the only pro Somaliweyn entity that exists in Somalia today . Hargaysa form of secession has always been unacceptable. Hiiraale thugish JVA entity is a thing of the past. Al Shabaab are fighting for more war and hvae no regard for the Somali people and their interest. There is not TFG and Sharif Hotels Midnimo Qaran thing is stuck in Villa Somalia. Thus what is Pintland to do? It must put it's case as the only viable Somali state that can truly manage the interest of the people of Somalia. Like I mentioned earlier it should seek to gain Power of attorney over Somalia as a trustee. Suggestions; 1. The capital of Somalia be moved to Garowe, opening all the missions , embassies And relocate all UN offices to that city. Garowe is peaceful and Somali territory instead of our affairs being run from Nairobi. 2. bring southern clans to Puntland and hold a grand conference not of just reconciliation but to give them space in order to discuss the creation of local and state admins that will form the real Federal states of the south similar to Puntland. 3. let the national army, navy be trained in Pubtland with international support then move to take over sections of the south as those areas develop politically. Let's be clear the many who posted here notably Sharif hotels son, A&T have no say in the discussions going on in Puntland, the status quo might seem wonderful for these individuals but it is not for us. Regards The Duke

  22. Two main options, the first a strong government temporarily detached from south Somalia, looking out for its interest, security, education economic development and provision of services for rural isolated communities. The second, Puntland declares itself the republic of Somalia, calls UN and international players to set up base in Garowe, and develops its infrastructure and takes custody of the Somalia until the south comes out of coma. Basically Puntland will have to gain Power of attorney over Somalia since the south and Mogadishu can not function mentally at this moment. Both options are feasible and do not mean secessionist of the anti-Somaliweyn branch. We can not and will not accept the status quo and Puntland has the strength to recover the lost Somali name. Enough is enough.
