  12. Somalia: Al-Shabab Destroys Grave of Well-Known Somali Cleric in Mogadishu MOGADISHU, Somalia — Witnesses say Somalia's al-Qaida-linked militant group is exhuming the remains of a revered moderate cleric in the capital to stop people from worshipping him. Al-Shabab official Ali Mohamed Hussein says Tuesday his group dug up Sheik Mohyadin Eli's grave in Mogadishu because people seeking blessings visit the tomb for spiritual purposes. Witness Hassan Da'ud says the cleric's 30-year-old remains were stuffed into sacks. Al-Shabab has prohibited adoring tombs and destroyed idolized tombs in areas under its control over the last couple of years. The group espouses a strict interpretation of Islam. Many Somalis observe a relatively moderate form of Islam that allows the veneration of respected saints
  13. Belongings lie on the ground after families were told to vacate their houses in Mogadishu, Somalia, Thursday, March 25, 2010. Witnesses say hundreds of poor Somali families are being forcibly evicted from their homes near the airport. Police spokesman Abdulahi Hassan Barise says the plan will continue until threats to Mogadishu's main airport are eliminated. The targeted area was a former air force base and is about 100 yards (meters) from the airport's fence. Human rights groups say the families _ who squatted the idle land _ have no place to go. Somalia's fragile government is battling Islamists who usually fire mortars from residential areas. (AP Photo)

  16. The man who "liberated" reer Mogadishu Somali troops demolish homes near Mogadishu airport About half the population of Mogadishu have fled their homes Somali security agents have demolished some 500 houses near the airport in the capital, Mogadishu, amid concerns they could be used as cover for an attack. A BBC reporter says hundreds of people were sitting in the open in the Afisoyoni suburb, saying they had nowhere else to go. Mogadishu's mayor has said the makeshift homes could be used by militants from the al-Shabab group. The airport is one of the few areas run by the UN-backed government. Al-Shabab controls much of southern Somalia. The BBC's Mohammed Olad Hassan in Mogadishu says most Afisoyoni residents have already fled fighting in other parts of the city. The government says it will provide land for those whose homes have been destroyed. But our reporter says there is no evidence of this. He says the airport has come under attack several times in the past - but never from this suburb. Mayor Abdurisaq Mohamed Nor ordered the homes to be demolished earlier this week. About half of Mogadishu's residents have fled their homes after two decades of conflict.

  19. Conservatives and Republicans today suffered their most crushing legislative defeat since the 1960s. It’s hard to exaggerate the magnitude of the disaster. Conservatives may cheer themselves that they’ll compensate for today’s expected vote with a big win in the November 2010 elections. [...] No illusions please: This bill will not be repealed. Even if Republicans scored a 1994 style landslide in November, how many votes could we muster to re-open the “doughnut hole” and charge seniors more for prescription drugs? How many votes to re-allow insurers to rescind policies when they discover a pre-existing condition? How many votes to banish 25 year olds from their parents’ insurance coverage? And even if the votes were there – would President Obama sign such a repeal? We followed the most radical voices in the party and the movement, and they led us to abject and irreversible defeat. [...] So today’s defeat for free-market economics and Republican values is a huge win for the conservative entertainment industry. Their listeners and viewers will now be even more enraged, even more frustrated, even more disappointed in everybody except the responsibility-free talkers on television and radio. For them, it’s mission accomplished. For the cause they purport to represent, it’s Waterloo all right: ours.
  20. As a result of these baseless accusations reported by the Monitoring Group, residents of Laasqoray, Dhahar, Badhan and Ceerigaabo of Sanaag region came out to demonstrate against the false and repeated attacks by the Monitoring Group. Residents rallying on the streets of Laasqoray pleaded for their voices to be heard. For those who followed Puntland's political process clearly witness Atam's accusation as an arms dealer and a terrorist as ridiculous as President Faroole being linked with piracy. The people of Puntland are only requesting a neutral and credible agency that is detached from Somalia's raging political competition. A/Qudus N. Salah Donyale abdi@dhahar.com Nicely put. This group referenced Somali clan based websites to attack Somali officials. This was insult to our intelligence, the author is spot on and his small piece has spoken for the many of us who are disgusted with this group. Well done sir.
