If we look at this purely from military point of view Attam’s defeat and the shock it sent his militias and sympathizers was astonishing in its ease and so far the security of the state is much better than before the skirmishes began. Its ironic to note that a police operation in Jaimaca this year against a bandit cost the lives of hundreds of people and much destruction in the Galgala skirmishes Attam lost many men, one of his main commanders was caught wounded and died in custody on the first day of battles. Many of his AL Shabaab cells in the city of Bossaso were cleaned out and there has not been a single bombing in the city since his defeat. Coming back to the claims of “Clan war” and justice, Attam’s sub clan have a number of MP’s Ministers, Mayors who represent the state like any other, none of these individuals have resigned, let alone join Attam. The dilemma for the Attam supporters is simple. If it’s a local uprising and a clan struggle then it’s a weak one and bodes badly for the clan and its overall ego. If it’s a “religious” movement then it has had no impact since the clashes have been minimal since the first days clashes at the start of the fighting and Attam has lost allot of men and all the territory he once held. If it is a combination of “religious” Al Shabaab, and a sub clan mix, then Attam is by far the worst leader in history. It’s a no win situation for them. The strategy of the Radical Diaspora supporters of Attam has now shifted to whole sale clan insults and ludicrous attacks on individuals. Even the daily reporting of fictitious clashes and “Attam has taken over Galgala” have now been reduced. The Attam affair clearly shows that clan incitement is not as effective political tool as some people hoped it would be, also its positive that the people of Puntland have moved on. The small pockets of resistance still holding outwill only further frustrate this group who are fighting a “war” all on their own.

Speaking to the press in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, after a three-day visit to Somalia, Ms Kyung-wha noted that she had extensive discussions with Somali authorities, civil society groups, UN colleagues and the members of the international community in Somaliland, Puntland and Kenya. "I come away from the past three days with a better understanding of both the despair and the hopes of the Somali people," she wrote in a press statement issued by the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). During her short visit, she noted in a press release that "the impressive progress made towards ability and development by Somalilanders and Puntlanders over the past years should remind us of what is possible and inspire us to do more," adding: "I greatly appreciate the commitment to the protection of human rights made to me by senior Puntland authorities in Garowe as well as those made by the president of Somaliland and the new Somaliland government." The OHCHR press statement said: "I am much encouraged by the commitment of the UNPOS SRSG to deploy United Nations staff – including human rights officers – to Somaliland and Puntland in the near future. This reflects the commitment of the United Nations to work shoulder-to-shoulder with Somalis in their country and provide assistance to the maximum extent possible." Using the trail the ONLF's [Rapid Reaction Brigade[ landed safely in what was before then thought of as hostile terrain. Led by the able commander they met no hostile action through their 150 KM trek inland and were supported by local guides and population. The daring landing has opened a new chapter in the ONLF whose supporter’s moral is increasing by the day.
