  9. >>>>>>>> Reporters Without Borders condemns the apparent complicity between the Ethiopian authorities and those in Somalia’s semi-autonomous northeastern region of Puntland in arresting journalists and gagging the media. Since their arrest, Sweden has refrained from open criticism of Ethiopia. Considering the sensitive situation, critical comments are obviously considered to risk causing more damage than good. On Thursday, however, the Foreign Ministry published their first report in three years on the human rights situation in 188 countries. The chapter on Ethiopia does not make for pretty reading. "Over the past four years a deterioration of respect for human rights has occurred," states the report. Several journalist organisations are now joining the protests against the Swedes' situation. The Swedish Union of Journalists (Svenska journalistförbundet - SJF) and Swedish Union of Photographers (Svenska Fotografers Förbund) are demanding their release. "They were arrested while carrying out journalistic work, and ought therefore never to have been arrested or captured at all," commented Jonas Nordling, SJF's chairman, in a statement. The International Federation of Journalists condemn the arrests "in the strongest possible terms" and demand that the Swedes be given access to healthcare. The United States-based international journalist organisation CPJ, and Reporters without Borders (Reportrar utan gränser) have previously made similar demands.
  10. Swedish Journalists violent arrest roundly condemned IFJ Condemns Violent Arrest of Two Swedish Journalists in Ethiopia The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its European group, the Federation of European Journalists (EFJ) today condemn in the strongest terms the violent arrest of two Swedish journalists in the O'gaden region on the border with Somalia. Photojournalist Johan Persson and reporter Martin Schibbye, were arrested on 27 June 2011 while reporting on the rebel movement, the O'gaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), which is fighting the Ethiopian government in the region. The two journalists were also injured after coming under fire from the Ethiopian military. The IFJ/EFJ accuse Ethiopian soldiers of deliberately endangering the journalists’ safety following reports that they military had been tipped off over the movements of the two reporters in the vicinity by officials of the Puntland Administration in neighbouring Somalia. The two journalists are believed to have been transferred to Addis Ababa and may face terrorist charges as the ONLF is considered a terrorist group by the Ethiopian authorities. ”Journalists are systematically denied access to the O'gaden region and the authorities often resort to violence to suppress reporting on the region,” said Gabriel Baglo, IFJ Africa Director. “This reckless targeting of the journalists shows appalling disregard of human life. We hold the Ethiopian government responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the journalists who must be released immediately so that they can receive medical treatment for their wounds.” According to the National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ), IFJ affiliate, Schibbye and Persson who work for Kontinent, a Swedish photojournalist agency, landed at Galkayo airport in Puntland and were travelling from Puntland to a region in Ethiopia which is controlled by rebel forces of O'gaden National Liberation Front when they were followed, attacked and arrested. The EFJ also called on the Ethiopian government to respect the journalists’ right to work independently. “These colleagues were only trying to do their job, reporting on a conflict which is not well understood outside the region,” said EFJ President, Arne König. “It is the duty of journalists to provide independent and impartial information which requires access to the location.” For more information contact the IFJ at +221 33 867 95 87 / +32 2 235 2200 The IFJ represents over 600,000 journalists in 131 countries worldwide Press Release ARM Condemns the Arrest and Continued Detention of Two Journalists in Ethiopia’s O'gaden Region African Rights Monitor-ARM condemns the arrest and the illegal detention of the freelance journalists Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye who were arrested on July 01, 2011 by the Ethiopian Forces in the O'gaden region. The two journalists took risk to fulfill their journalistic duties and to cover the dramatic human and social atrocities committed against the civilians in the O'gaden by the Ethiopian military. The Ethiopian government has sealed off the O'gaden region to international humanitarian NGOs, including human rights defenders and the international press to operate freely in the region. African Rights Monitor-ARM calls upon the Ethiopian government to unconditionally free Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye and to lift the restrictions on the international press and allow NGOs to help the civilians ravaged by the war and famine UNPO calls for the immediate release of the journalists, Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye. UNPO also condemns the current information blockade and strongly urges the Ethiopian government to allow entry of reporters, human rights advocates and humanitarian aid to the O'gaden region.
  11. It was unfortunate the Journos never got to there destination which was to capture the suffering of the civilians in the conflict zone caught in the middle of a war hidden from view and a severe drought added to a full economic blockade. The ONLF unit that was to escort them was delayed resulting in the Journos and there minders getting ambushed after intelligence was delivered to the Ethiopians from Gaalkacyo where the Journos arrived earlier. It illustrates the tragedy of this conflict, Ethiopia wants it to stay under reported and out of the International communities view but they will find it more difficult to hide the scale of this conflict and i'm sure more Journalists are interested as to what this tyrant is hiding.
  12. Press Release – 3 July 2011 Press Release – 3 July 2011 ONLF have lost contact with two Swedish Photojournalists on their way to O'gaden from Puntland since July 1, 2011 and a pro-Ethiopian tabloid in Somali is reporting that The Ethiopian army arrested the two journalists, publishing their names and claiming that the Army killed some of their guides. ONLF also received a tip from sources inside the Puntland Administration that the Ethiopian Army was tipped by Puntland Security regarding the two journalists. The two photojournalists are Mr Johan Persson and Mr Martin Schibbye both working for ‘Kontinent photojournalist agency’. ONLF believes that these photojournalists are now in the hands of the Ethiopian government and ONLF fears for their lives and safety. The ONLF condemns the arrest of Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye who were attempting fulfil their journalistic obligation. This act demonstrates the Ethiopian regimes complete disregard for the rights of the press and it continued determination to prevent any independent reporting from ****** in order to hide their on-going war crimes against the people of O'gaden. The ONLF further condemns the Puntland authorities who facilitated the arrest of these Swedish Photojournalists and passed their information to Ethiopian security agents demonstrating the Puntland continued policy of aiding the Ethiopian regime in all matters related to O'gaden, particularly as it relates to the persecution of O'gaden civilians and enforcing Ethiopia’s efforts to continue to isolate O'gaden from the outside world. The ONLF calls on the international community to hold the Ethiopian regime and Puntland authorities to account for this despicable act and pressure them to release the reporters immediately. O'gaden National Liberation Front (ONLF)
  13. Desperate Ethiopia, paranoid about Journalists, Aid workers, human rights groups, etc.It as become typical of this dictatorship to use these terror tactics to deter these sectors from visiting the O'gaden so they can continue there war against the Somali people in the O'gaden. The Journalist crossing from the so-called Puntland region another entity at war with the free media tipped off the Ethiopians, these flagrant violations committed by such entities will not be forgotten when all is said and done there will be justice. Those who believe this weakening state of Ethiopia will be there shadow for ever will be disappointed and the Somali people will bring them to account.
  14. Meles Zenawi dupes another firm into a conflict zone. A Chinese company based in Hong Kong, whose name authorities have not disclosed, agreed to pay over 200 million dollars to the Ethiopian government last week for concessions on Calub Gas Reserve, located in Somali Regional State, sources disclosed to Fortune. The Ministry of Mines (MoM) floated an international tender in March, 2011, inviting petroleum companies interested in developing the Calub Gas Reserve, which was first discovered during the reign of Emperor Haile Selassie. This is the largest amount that has been invested in the area. The second largest was made by Petronas from Malaysia, which paid 80 million Br in pre development costs on Calub and Hilala gas fields, according to an expert close to the industry. However, the expert argued that the amount is not high in comparison with the total previous investments made in the area by the government. “The amount might be in consideration for the cost of the past operations (pre development costs) the country incurred,” an industry player speculated. The Calub Gas Reserve was first discovered in 1972 by Tenneco, a United States (US) based company, 42 years after it was discovered. It drilled 3,700 metres in the Calub area, located 1,200km from the capital. Several oil companies have since been attracted by Calub, which has an estimated total gas reserve of 76 billion cubic metres. Gas exploration was mainly conducted in five sedimentary basins: ******, Blue Nile, Mekelle, Gambella, and Omo Valley. However, more detailed studies are conducted in the ****** Basin in southern Ethiopia, which has attracted several oil companies for extensive exploration works on the area. The major work that demands huge investments has been already done by different oil companies that did not enter production stage. However, the newly awarded company is in a more advantageous position, according to the expert. Around 10 international companies have been involved in the exploration process, since its discovery in the 1930s. Soviet Petroleum Exploration (SPE) confirmed the gas reserves by drilling seven wells, including in Hilala, 80km from Calub, during the Derg regime. Zhoungyan Petroleum Exploration Bureau (ZPEB), a Chinese company, has also been commissioned by the current government for well completion. “As the field is almost ready for production, the new company would be expected only to establish a plant with all the machinery necessary for Production,” the expert said. Calub Gas SC, a local private company that was established with an initial capital of 102 million Br in 1995, was also involved in the exploration of the area, after commissioning the technical and economical feasibility studies to two French firms. A total of 95pc of its shares were owned by the government The company was liquidated in 2005 primarily because its majority shares are owned by the gov’t, such as the former Ministry of Finance (MoF) with 88,043 shares After the dissolution of Calub Gas, the ministry put the exploration up for international bidding, which Petronas had won. Nevertheless, the company failed to achieve its ambitious goals. Petronas, which was established in 1974 and has around 110 subsidiary companies in Africa, stopped its exploration work in Ethiopia over management decisions last year, surrendering all property to the government. “Petronas left the area for its own reasons,” the expert told Fortune. “The fact that the area has huge potential is unquestionable.” A few months later, the ministry floated a new tender for the area. A total of seven international companies answered the tender, tying up MoM in the evaluation of the technical proposals and financial offers for about a month. MoM has completed the evaluation and signed an agreement with the Chinese company on Tuesday, June 7, 2011, sources claimed. However, higher officials at the ministry have given assurances that they are still finalising the evaluation of the proposals and will only announce the result in two weeks. The government has projected to increase operations on Calub and Hilala gas projects to 100pc by the end of 2014/15, from its 20pc now. It intends to increase annually by 20pc, according to the GTP.
  15. Land grap in Gambella, Ethiopia. t's the deal of the century: £150 a week to lease more than 2,500 sq km (1,000 sq miles) of virgin, fertile land -- an area the size of Dorset -- for 50 years. Bangalore-based food company Karuturi Global says it had not even seen the land when it was offered by the Ethiopian government with tax breaks thrown in.
  16. Yesterday during a three-nation tour of Africa, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had these words of caution for her hosts: Clinton on Saturday warned of a creeping “new colonialism” in Africa from foreign investors and governments interested only in extracting natural resources to enrich themselves. African leaders must ensure that foreign projects are sustainable and benefit all their citizens, not only elites, she said. http://www.theroot.com/buzz/hillary-clinton-africa-faces-new-colonialism-threat
  17. Claims of African ‘land grab’ spark controversy – Brian Walker CNN – A new report published this week claims farmers in Africa are being driven off their traditional lands to make way for vast new industrial farming projects backed by European hedge funds seeking profits and foreign countries looking for cheap food. But some firms named in the study are hitting back, saying they are providing desperately needed jobs and cash to impoverished regions on the continent. The Oakland Institute, a left-leaning social development think tank, says investors have bought up nearly 60 million hectares (148 million acres) since the financial crash in 2009 — land equal to the size of France, in what it calls a “land grab” in Africa. “The same financial firms that drove us into a global recession by inflating the real estate bubble through risky financial maneuvers are now doing the same with the world’s food supply,” said Anuradha Mittal, executive director of the Oakland Institute. “It’s kind of shameful that while we in the Western world paint Africa as a basket case — we talk about its hunger, we talk about its corruption — but we are responsible for trying to steal the land and turn it into a breadbasket for the North” Mittal said, referring to developed economies. The report, “Understanding Land Investment Deals in Africa,” focuses on seven African nations and claims to uncover a tangled web of deals being obscured by shell companies and governments. It concludes that the alleged “land grab” is leading to the potential displacement of hundreds of thousands of farmers, often in deals with far-off government bureaucrats or naive local tribal chiefs. “We’re told over and over that the key to development is by helping small farmers,” Mittal told CNN. “But instead, in this rush for mechanized farming, for growing bio-fuels, for growing grains for export, we seem willing to sacrifice women farmers and indigenous communities with no solutions for what happens later to them in Africa.” The study by the California-based group pins much of the blame on London-based Emergent Asset Management, which runs one of Africa’s largest land acquisition funds, and is headed by former JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs currency traders and investment bankers. European and U.S. agribusinesses are singled out for buying hundreds of thousands of hectares for future biofuel development. And the report says the current rush for cheap land is also backed by China, Libya and other Mideast and Asian investors looking for ways to secure food sources and farming for their growing populations. But Mittal says she was most surprised to discover deals by U.S. universities that she claims are investing in deals set up by hedge funds buying up some of the continent’s best farmland on promises of annual returns of 25% or more. Universities such as Harvard “have chosen to go ahead just so they can see their endowments grow,” Mittal said. She called on university backers to honor goals of socially responsible investing and to hold back money in a campaign similar to the one that helped bring down apartheid in South Africa. “It’s time to get out of these funds and invest in ways that build communities and don’t devastate them,” she said. Some of the companies and investors named in the report are disputing the claims. “The allegations set out in the Oakland Report are grossly inaccurate,” wrote Emergent’s CEO Susan Payne in a statement e-mailed to CNN. “We are consulting our lawyers and will be issuing a full statement rebutting the allegations.” A spokesman for Harvard said he was unable to find any direct documentation for the claims in the study, and was seeking clarification for any involvement on its part from the firm that handles its endowment. The report essentially says investors are being promised cheap land with no questions asked while the hedge fund buyers are searching for ways to displace traditional farms that often have no clear formal ownership for small fees and promises of employment. The study’s authors say that land in the war-torn Sierra Leone sometimes leased for as little as $2 per hectare. “Foreign investors often employ local ‘agents’ or ‘coordinators’ to identify land for lease and negotiate leases with local communities, chiefs and landowners,” the report charges. “There is evidence that these ‘agents’ take unfair advantage of local traditions, perceptions and vulnerabilities in order to convince local populations that they will benefit from the lease deals, while refraining from discussing potential risks such as loss of farmland or negative environmental impacts,” the report says. Mittal pointed to Zambia, where she claims that 94% of the country’s land is held informally through customary rights, and where land use and ownership must be negotiated with local chiefs. “I was told that you would go with a bottle of Johnnie Walker, sit on the ground with him and clap three times and make your offering of whiskey,” Mittal told CNN. “Then you have secured the title to the land with no problem.” The study also points to programs in Ethiopia where hundreds of thousands are being driven off their traditional lands and placed in new government-planned villages, while foreign investors move in to start new export-driven farms. “We have seen cases of speculators taking over agricultural land while small farmers, viewed as ‘squatters,’ are forcibly removed with no compensation,” Frederic Mousseau, policy director at the Oakland Institute, said in a press release. “This is creating insecurity in the global food system that could be a much bigger threat to global security than terrorism,” Mousseau added. “The majority of the world’s poor still depend on small farms for their livelihoods, and speculators are taking these away while promising progress that never happens.” However, one investor group tied to Emergent in South Africa says that the projects it backs are boosting incomes and market access in places once totally cut off from anything beyond growing enough food for themselves. “We’ve really created something out of nothing in Africa,” said Anthony Poorter, Africa director for EmVest Asset Management. “There are no shady deals.” He pointed to three land projects his firm backs in Mozambique, including a $12 million, 1,000-hectare farm (2,471 acres) that employs 350 people and provides rising income to the surrounding area. “Our projects in Mozambique have caused a real boost to the income of local communities,” Poorter said, pointing out EmVest tries to source as much of its labor and supplies locally as possible. “The GDP of Matuba village has risen significantly and we are the biggest employer.” Poorter summed it up by saying, “We have people lining up for jobs every day, so it can’t be that bad a place to work.”

  19. Ethiopia is no friend of the TFG or the Somali people, every stooge that serves the Ethiopians has a similar ending humiliated and disgraced. Its ironic however these same stooges never learn and continue to put there selfish interest above the interest of the nation no matter how many times there violated, its an addictive drug Ethiopian lackyism. The TFG was making gains in the south western regions, it seems considering Ethiopia has greatly benefited from the turmoil in Somalia that keeping the south in its current status quo would continue paying dividends hence the arrests and the stalemate of the offensive, Al-shabab was a gift to Ethiopia and there still taking it apart. The Ugandan entrance to Somalia is a huge threat to there monopoly on the Somali situation, as Museveni cashes in there loosing huge pockets of there sphere of influence in Somalia, these regions of whom the detained officials represent remain hostage to Ethiopia's designs.Surely with Somalia on track to peace and the defeat of Al-shabab, Ethiopia will loose its positions as a "key" ally in the war on terror which gave them impunity escaping scrutiny for there war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Horn.
