SomaliPhilosopher;947193 wrote: You woman are a ticking time bomb, biologically of course , how does a woman marry at an older age in such case Fertility declines at 35+, and even then women still have children into their late 30s and 40s. My mom was 34 when I was born, and I'm the first of three. There's no rush here

Profiled on Al Jazeera: One man is presenting a different view of Somalia, through Instagram. Abdi Latif Dahir, a journalist based in Mogadishu, has spent the last year snapping pictures, more frequently on his iPhone than his professional camera. His striking images provide alternative visual narratives of a country which has undergone twenty years of civil conflict. @abdi_latif: Playing football in Mogadishu. @abdi_latif: Beautiful mural inside the bullet-ridden wall of the Somali National Theater in Mogadishu, Somalia (Nabad means peace in Somali). @abdi_latif: On top of Sheikh Mountain in Somaliland. @abdi_latif: Lido beach in the weekend. He takes great photos, see his instagram here.

There is no "should," marry whenever you want but I do think it's generally a bad idea to marry at a young age (men and women).

I aced it! I was expecting it to be much more difficult Alpha Blondy;946939 wrote: how did i get myself into this mess? SOMEONE, please tell me? how did a simple 'i'll give you some guidance' .....end up becoming a full time mashruuc, in actually doing the entire thing, for a certain someone, i know........ PISSED! why am i wasting my time?...i could have used my time in better ways! do you know what i mean? I have the same problem sometimes, if you're a helpful person sometimes people can take advantage of you and your time. You just have to be firm with your boundaries and realize you're not being helpful when you find yourself doing more than you should.

Alpha ruins everyone else's threads and surely does not think twice about doing so, so let's not worry about derailing his topic. We're not on the same page, what we have is the same information but I disagree with your interpretation of their usage of the word Somali because it doesn't hold up in the context of other Ethiopian documents. The kings knew the difference between the general "Muslim" and the ethnic "Somali," so the usage here is precise.

Coofle;946762 wrote: The oldest written records considering the word "Somali" is in some Ethiopian texts, Ironically it meant some Derogatory term. so him being called Somali in Ethiopian texts doesn't mean he is an ethnic Somali, but it implies he was one of the Somalis (Derogatory collective term) lol are you trying to suggest they named us, with a derogatory term? The first recorded use of the word Somali was in songs from the negus Yeshaq's reign in the 15th century, celebrating the defeat of the Ifat sultanate (whose capital was Zeila). Of course as a victory song it is demeaning to the defeated, but Somali here is a literal description of the Muslims to the east.

SomaliPhilosopher;946749 wrote: There is nothing more I would like to see than our Somali heroes resurrected again. In fact I tried to hop on this project but was led to several dead ends. though this government must decide what image it wishes to form. there are also tricky dynamics to this like the ahmed gurey statue for instance. there is a lot of academic literature which suggeat gurey was not Somali and in fact his somali lineage specifically darooooooooooooood lineage has been pushed by the barre regime. The clan stuff is dumb, but I do believe he was Somali. Ethiopian historiography (including the royal chronicles) describe him as a Somali with an army of Somali nomads, and I think Somali oral history confirms this. But I do know there are a few scholars who argue he was not (possibly Harla from Harar), but their only evidence is the ambiguity of the one account Futah Al-Habash, written by an Arab who was there at the time and noted that the army was Somali... so their logic is that if Gurey was was Somali, he would have mentioned that too.

SP didn't say just canonical, mainstream poetry, but Somali poetry as a whole, which is not limited to men or to specific regions and clans. They may not be as well known, but they are there

Is "news" not a sufficient reason to start a thread?
