  3. Depending on which generation of somalis who grew up in the west u belong to, the case will be different for each. Whether u came to the west as a grown up, a nearly grown up, a child or even born here. So depending on each individuals experience on both side of the coin, there are some good and bad about each culture. I personally love the fact that western 'whites' have this notion instilled into their minds from a very young age that they need to find work after their studies are over and are more or less on their own in that respect. They work all their lives and try to do the best they can. What they do with their money is something i dont agree with. Then our culture has that 'family' feel which is beautiful. Tracing back your for-fathers, knowing yr extended family and treating them all like yr brothers and sister is something that wester cultures just cant begin to grasp. I tell my work colleuges that my family is similar to the film 'My big fat gree wedding' and their like  . They cant walk into their cousins houses and make themselves a cup of tea, that if they know them at all apart fom weddings and funerals hey have no contact whatsoever,,,, Obviously our culture also has bad parts to it, but if u try to enjoy the best of both worlds then its all good.

Antonio de Oliveira Filho, better known as Careca, was among his country’s most promosing players in the early eighties. His powerful right-foot shot and pace made him lethal in front of goal. He started his career in Guarani and would have played up front for Brazil in their magic World Cup team of 1982 had he not been injured on the eve of the finals. He moved to Sao Paulo after the World Cup in Spain and had several successful seasons there and was Brazilian champion of 1986 beating his old club Guarani in the final. The World Cup was held in Mexico that same year, and Careca was determined not to miss it again. He played a key role in yet another great Brazilian team which reached the quarterfinals and were beaten by France on penalties in one of the classic games in soccer history. Personally, Careca had a great tournament and scored five goals making him second on the topscorers’ list after Lineker. Careca was soon tempted to join a top club in Europe and after staying another season with Sao Paulo, he teamed up with Diego Maradona and fellow Brazilian Alemao in Napoli in 1987. Careca was now ranked as one of the best strikers in the world and with Napoli he won several trophies, among them the Scudetto (Serie A championship) and the UEFA Cup beating Stuttgart with Careca as one of the goalscorers. After six years in Napoli, he moved to Japan in 1993 as one of the foreign stars trying to set the Japanese league alight. Careca was then 33 and spent three years in Asia before returning home to Brazil in 1997. He was nearly forty when he retired having played in the lower leagues for a couple of years.

  13. IAN WRIGHT: RACIST RON TAUNTED ME Apr 23 2004 By Ian Wright By Darren Lewis FORMER England striker Ian Wright has accused disgraced Ron Atkinson of making him the butt of racist jokes. Wright, now a BBC football pundit, claimed he was forced to call on Garth Crooks to intervene after being subjected to racist jibes by the sacked ITV commentator. The 40-year-old alleged that the final straw came during the 2002 World Cup. Wright said he told former Spurs player Crooks: "I don't like this. Every time I see Ron Atkinson he is making the latest popular racist joke at me and I don't really want to hear that." The ex-Arsenal star claimed Crooks, who also works for the BBC and is a friend of Atkinson's, spoke to him and he apologised. Yesterday Atkinson again insisted he was not a racist, despite calling Chelsea defender Marcel Desailly a "lazy f*****g n*gg*r" when he thought his mike was switched off after the Monaco game on Tuesday. But during an interview with Radio Five Live, to be broadcast today, Wright said: "The fact that Ron has been such a force in the 70s when he has seen and heard what black players have gone through make it worse. "For him to be making racist remarks in 2004? It's a joke. I am gutted about it. I don't know if he is doing it out of bravado or there are people that he was trying to have a laugh with but that is not the type of thing you say. "We have done things before and I was around him when I worked for the BBC on football during the last World Cup. "He was doing it for ITV. Now, Ron has a few people around him who are, like, high-profile broadcasters themselves. And he makes these little jokes at your expense. "He did it to me a few times at after-game parties and I didn't like it." Wright said that Atkinson's track record in working with black players was no excuse. "He knows it's offensive. "Lazy n*gg*r? That's like a plantation vibe. What's that all about? "What really gets me is that I have heard his interviews about this and he says that he has taken his mike off and his headphones off before he says it. "Does that make it any better?" But Wright added: "I'm sure in hindsight he has realised the severity of what he has done and, to be honest, I have got no hard feelings against him. I am sure he has realised that he has made a costly, costly mistake." Yesterday, 24 hours after his gaffe lost him his £200,000 a-year job as a commentator, Atkinson was sacked as a columnist with The Guardian and dumped from advertising campaigns with soft-drink makers 7-Up and the West Bromwich Building Society. And during a tense live TV interview last night, he appeared close to losing his temper as he refused to comment on his future. "I've said, and I've said many times, that I apologise to the people I have offended. I was totally out of order, is that not enough." Asked if he was a racist, the 65-year-old replied: "Am I heck as like. Never in a million years. I made an unfortunate choice of words but no way in a million years can I be described as a racist. "My reputation will stand up as being someone who has worked harder and longer with black players than anybody. I've given as many black players the opportunity to succeed in football than anybody else. "Hopefully when the dust settles people will start to realise that this was a very bad error of judgment of mine and is outweighed by the number of things I have done for people." Atkinson also won support from some of his former black players, including West Bromwich Albion legend Cyrille Regis - who has long campaigned against racism. Regis, who spoke to Atkinson on the phone yesterday, said: "I was shocked when I heard, as obviously I think anybody would be, but he has realised the gravity of his comments and paid the price." Carlton Palmer also said ITV should give him another chance - and his job back. "He is a very close friend. He has signed me at three clubs and I can say without any doubt he is not a racist." Former West Ham player Bobby Barnes, a trustee of anti-racism campaign Kick It Out, said: "I would not say Ron is a racist. "The comments he made are totally unacceptable but we have to remember he is part of a bygone generation when words like this were more acceptable than today." But TUC president Roger Lyons said Atkinson's outburst set anti-racism efforts in football back 10 years. At today's TUC Black Workers Conference he will call for Atkinson and ITV to be fined. "The hypocrisy of Atkinson is astounding," he said. "This is a man who made his name from playing black players. "He has now been exposed as a user and a racist of the worst kind. He should receive a life ban from Premiership clubs." RA: "What in heaven's name was f*****g Ranieri thinking in bringing Veron on?" Second, unidentified voice: "He'll get savaged by the press.." RA: [in an increasingly animated voice]: "Oh and f*****g rightly so. And I'm sorry, but I f***ing think that f*****g Desailly is a cheating f***. That was wrong. He''s f*****g been gone for two and a half years! And instead of playing like an old man and saying 'alright I'll f*****g stay where I can''t get exploited... Muffled voice in background RA [continues]: "I've always thought that he has no awareness of danger. He is what is known in some schools as a f*****g lazy thick n*gg*r. That is a f*****g disgusting performance. Full marks to them though. They were f*****g different class."ATKINSON'S TV OUTBURST

    Socrates

One of the most elegant midfield generals in soccer history, Socrates, began his career in Botafogo. He was never a teenage star and didn’t make his debut in the Brazilian national team until he was 25. He was blessed with wonderful skills, vision and seemed to have so many options when he was on the ball. He was able to play the ball wherever and whenever he wanted. His heel-kicks became famous world wide. These rare skills combined with the fact that he was a medical student more than justified him being nicknamed “the doctor”. Socrates captained Brazil’s fantastic World Cup team of 1982 partnering Cerezo, Falcao and Zico in midfield. He scored twice in that tournament, one of them being a marvellous goal against the Soviet Union when he dribbled past two players before firing it home from long range. Brazil didn’t reach the semifinals in that tournament, but played some wonderful soccer. Socrates was not an ordinary athlete, infact he didn’t look at himself as an athlete. He smoked a pack of sigarettes every day, and that was one of the reasons to why he never settled in Italy when he arrived there in 1984 to play for Fiorentina. The lifestyle didn’t suit him and he went back to Brazil a year later. In 1986, Socrates again was instrumental for Brazil in their attempt of winning the World Cup, but France and Platini won on penalties in the quarterfinal after a wonderful match. Socrates missed one of the penalties in the shoot-out. He was the only player of the survivors of the 1982 team who really reached the same level, but it wasn’t enough to take them through. He scored more than a goal every third game in average for Brazil, which is excellent for a midfielder and added two more to his account in the Mexico World Cup. At clublevel he played most of his career for Botafogo and Corinthians for whom he won three Sao Paulo state championships. Socrates also played for Flamengo winning a Rio state championship before ending his career in 1990 playing for Santos.
