Qat addiction is a huge social problem in Somaliland. Nothing of value has ever beeing in ported in Zaylac for the last seven years. People are taxed to death and the fishermen were even denied access due to foreign trawlers over fishing in the Zaylac aria.

 

Even the Djibouti navy has intercepted and sequestered Saylac boats bringing fuel from Yemen. Tis port was quiet for a long time. Yet, when the business of the day became Qat it was made easy to import from war torn Yemen. NO one can stop this drug because those who are running the government are addicts themselves.

 

There was reports about a delegation from Somaliland going to Ethiopia to reopen Qat imports. The public were discouraged to buy the Ethiopian Qat, but the ruling class can not wait to bring back the Qat.

 

Those who chew this drug usually build big castles in the evening and at night (habeenkii markay mirqaamaan daara ayey dhisaan) just like those who are dreaming while asleep, all that false dream disappears when they wake up, yet, unfortunately, they do start again and again while years pass. If people stop chewing they congregate in the afternoons and ask questions about their government. Normal people would ask questions on corruption and misuse of public funds.

 

Protests usually start before noon and as soon as the Qat arrives everyone must leave and sit down to chew. In Somaliland , the health minister who should be working to reduce the QAt related health problems is an addict himself. Go figure.

For 27, no one inside or outside government has ever addressed this Qat drug. The reason is because the leaders are addicts. NO one can deny that.

 

BY the way, on per capita, the largest Qat consuming politicians are from Djibouti and Somaliland.

Not too sure where Galbeedi got his statistics that Somaliland has the highest rate of Jaad users in Government.

 

It is really easy for someone sitting on his butt to make a flyby comment like the one Galbeedi mentioned. But reality is totally different. Jaad is not an easily fixable issue. It is a social ill, and like all social ills, it is best dealt with through education, songs, films etc. Making Jaad unsexy.

 

Other means like using force, jail threats or taxation, will only make things much worst. Specially knowing young men love to be "outlaws" and making Jaad use illegal will only play into their hands.
