Harrow Somali protestors

More than 50 women from the Somali community took to the streets outside Harrow Civic Centre to protest against an adoption decision they say goes against their religious beliefs. The women gathered outside Harrow Borough Council's offices in Station Road as the child put up for adoption was due to go to its new family today.

According to the group, the child was due to be adopted by a lesbian couple, which protesters say is against their religious beliefs. They say the mother and child’s religious beliefs and ethnicity have been ignored by placing the child in the home of the couple. Protesters say the toddler was taken into care by social services just over a year and a half ago due to the mother's health issues and was put up for adoption in last year. They are calling for the council to delay the adoption to reconsider the move.

A Harrow Council spokesman said: “Adoption decisions are taken after lengthy and extremely thorough consideration of what is in the child’s best interests and we always strive to identify the best parents possible, and ensure a child is placed as early in life as possible. These are always difficult decisions.

“We have met Somali community representatives in this case and are happy to talk through their concerns.

“In addition the Somali community has offered to work with us on raising the profile of fostering and adoption in their community.”

This all goes back to the problem of the Somali Community not caring for it's own, things like this will be bound to happen.

There should be far more well-off Somali families who adopt young, orphaned Somali children.

There is no reason why we can't take care of our own, instead of having our kids being raised by a lesbian couple.

The Barriers to entry into the adoption list albeit temporary for some, are great and very invasive.

Hmmm, why didn't they adopt the kid before all this? or do they prefer that the kid remain a ward of the state?

Exactly. If they didn't offer to adopt the child when they knew his/her mother was sick, they can STFU.

^They did try to foster/adopt - I read an article where it said 4 or 5 of the relatives of the family tried and failed to meet the 'criteria' for foster parents. Sadly - in western countries any idiot can have a child but - the family of a child put out for foster must be subjected to arbitrary criteria in order to care for their own. If the policy was proper and fair and taken to its proper conclusion - we would have committees to determine which individuals fit the appropriate criteria and allow only them to conceive and have children.

What's "arbitrary" and unfair about the criteria for fostering children?

^Arbitrary - a single woman on welfare can give birth to a child and care for him/her. But a couple on welfare will have a very hard time fostering a child because of criteria set by child welfare advocates. Is that arbitrary enough for you?

why are bloody foreigners adopting our sweet kids ?? wiyo wiy

you never see a white child adopted by black families but they always place black kids with white families.

this is a nightmare and what really irks me about this so called somali community is their protesting ONLY because its a lesbian couple and not foreigners putting hands on our kids with filthy pedophilic tastes and hatred of blacks.

kids should be placed with their exteneded family first, then their clan and with the widersomali as last resort. they should always be raised up in their cultural ethnic surrounds.

It seems that the Local Anger & demonstartion in the community regarding this young Muslim child being adopted by Lesbian White Couple has made the Council think twice.

A reassessment of the case is on going. Thumbs up for the locals who showed up nd took direct action. Children should be placed with their relatives or people from the similar racial background.

A Muslim family have spoken out after a London council chose a white lesbian couple to adopt their three-year-old daughter.

The Somali family, who cannot be named, have claimed Harrow council in London ignored offers from members of their extended family to take in the girl.

They told the mother, whose two other children have been taken into care, that the couple had been chosen because there were 'no Muslim adopters available at all', according to a family member.

The mother, who has mental health issues and child cannot be named for legal reasons.

Ibrahim, a member of the family, complained that she was not kept informed about the adoption.

He also told The Sunday Times that relatives had not been told why their bids to take in the child were rejected.

Ibrahim said that the mother was told by letter that the adoptive parents had been found, and that she must say goodbye to her daughter at a meeting last Wednesday.

But after a protest from 50 people outside the Harrow civic centre, the council offered to review the case and asked the family to submit alternative adopters on Friday.

Susan Hall, the leader of Harrow council, said that while it is 'ideal' for children to be matched with parents of a similar background, that cannot always happen.

She said: 'The reality is that the ultimate choice is governed by the kind of adoptive parents who are available', and that that 'dragging out' the process harms the child.

A spokesman for Coram, an adoption agency which works in Harrow, said: 'When it is not possible to match a child with families from the same religious and ethnic background, a balance must be struck between managing the uncertainty... and casting the net more widely.'

The Government has encouraged more adoptions to be approved regardless of ethnicity, religion of sexuality after figures showed some groups of children were taking much longer to be placed.

Adoptions have risen to a 21-year high as a result, with 4,000 children adopted in 2012/13 - though backlog of 6,000 remains.

I shared Safferz's stance initially, but this certainly changes things.

I think that my point has been proven here.

Alhamdulillah, for the protest and turn around.

These agencies are very racist and do enforce and promote racial sterotypes.
