The current government in Turkey had no interest whatsoever for an EU membership and is instead focused on reviving the Islamic faith and culture in Turkey and gaining influence in the Islamic world. That is why all those secularists and fake blondes had gone nuts and took to the streets when it downed on them that the AKP is the Muslim Brotherhood with a Turkish name.

I dont think the party in power now is interested at all joining the EU but they are throwing a show for a large segment of the Turkish population which are predominantly young and who are yearning to join the EU regardless. The AKP understands that turkey can be self sufficient, and can thrive without the EU membership and that is what many of their political agendas are intended to prove to the the turks and also to others.

For the EU, they have a pretty strong case for refusing turkey at the moment and Greece alone is too much troublesome for them now. The Europeans can not absorb turkey's problems politically or economically because of turkey's 75 million population which is roughly the combined population of eastern european EU member states.

You can actually identify a Turk from a Greek, a Bulgarian or a Romanian very easily for the most part. Despite centuries of Ottoman rule there has been very limited blood exchange among these populations. Look at their football teams if in doubt. Turkey accession would have been problematic even if it was white and christian due to its size and relative poverty, but civilization-ally Turks are not part of the European family. Turkish third generation guest workers haven't assimilated into Germany and barely speak the language, this has affirmed to EU leaders what they already believe.
