Puntland Highway Authority receives delegation from the EU major Infrastructure Projects to commence

Puntland Highway Authority (PHA) Eng. Hassan Osman Ali Chairman receives delegation from the EU. The EU in 2011 pledged to construct and build the infrastructure primarily roads in Puntland and subsequent expenses. Today the Puntland Road construction Project was commenced by Mr Paul Smith who is in charge for Infrastructure of the EU.

 

The project focuses on the Gaalkacyo-Bosaaso highway 750 kms road network especially on the Gaalkacyo-Garoowe road and all the roads that connect major towns and the cities on the coast to easy the movement of merchandise and security of those cities.

 

Furthermore a Highway from Boosaaso to neighbouring Ethiopia was discussed.

 

The EU promised that it will start soon the Infrastructure Project intended for Puntland in the next five years especially the Gaalkacyo-Garoowe road as they have the relevant funds.

 

The meeting comes after the promises the EU made to Puntland in terms of Infrastructure Projects.

Also the coastal towns of Eyl, Bayla and Baargaal will be connected to the main road/highway network of Puntland in the next five years inshaallaah.

Somalia: E.U. to support road projects in Puntland: director

GAROWE, Somalia Jan. 24, 2013 (Garowe Online) - The European Union is funding road rehabilitation projects in Puntland autonomous region of Somalia, according to a government agency director, Garowe Online reports.

 

Mr. Hassan Osman Ali, director of Puntland Highway Authority (PHA), received EU officers at his office in Garowe on Thursday.

 

Mr. Ali said he met with an infrastructure development expert for the EU, Mr. Paul Smith, and noted that the officials discussed the 750km paved road connecting Puntland port city of Bossaso to the city of Galkayo, in Mudug region.

 

Speaking on Radio Garowe, Mr. Ali said: “The EU delegation consisted of project specialists and discussions centered on rehabilitating the Bossaso-to-Galkayo paved highway.”

 

The EU has pledged to support road projects in Puntland, a vast region in northern Somalia that the country’s former central governments neglected to build adequate economic infrastructure, local officials say.

 

The tarmac highway requires major rehabilitation work, the PHA director said.
