What career should I pick

For a long time I thought about becoming a doctor but have no real passion in it whatsoever. My parents want me to get a degree that will insure me a job that has good pay. I want a job that I like. I love spending time with kids, I am a good writer, a people person, love traveling, and very good at memorizing things. What should I become?

What you've mentioned is not enough for anyone to make a decent suggestion. I don't think the fact that you like travelling, for example, has any meaningful bearing on what you should study at university. Stuff like academic subjects that you enjoy and are good at should play a significant role. Pick a decent subject that you like and reckon you will enjoy studying for three/four years. In my experience, choosing a degree course solely as means to a certain job or because of parental push usually ends up in regret.

Journalist maybe? You have a potential in becoming an author methinks. If you're fluent in Somali and have time to kill start writing children's book. I gotta tell you that will become a profitable corner in the market. Keep that fire in the belly flaming for you will figure something out pretty soon.

The chances of getting a decent well paid job in the areas you seem to like are not all that great. Choose a practical job/career you think you won't mind doing in the future then focus on how to get there. Something in engineering or the sciences. Work backwards.

Ugaas, what are you actually interested in or passionate about? Do some extensive research into different degrees and fields and go for the one that most interests you and which you think would help you find a good job/career. Most degrees these days are not used for any specific fields unless it's a technical or scientific one.

 

I think environmental science/ alternative energy/climate change are specialised and growing sectors and are likely to be huge in the future, Insha'ALLAH.

I think you should go into what @Valenteenah and N.O.R.F said or you should go into one of the 3 sciences, or specialised areas of mining or geochemistry regarding natural resources, petroleum engineering etc.

 

Do not take medicine if you do not like it, I didn't either.

What we often do not realize is that you can only gradually realize all your potential and a degree is just a beginning; you can start medicine straight away or get a degree in envirobnmental/renewable energy and then work or get an internship before enroling for graduate medicine later.

 

Many people start a graduate or undergraduate medical course later; it is very important to choose something that will get you respect and social standing while earning a decent living honestly (engineering, health sciences etc).

 

Likewise, if you are passionate about say Mathematics, Physics or any other somewhat serious or technical field, it is easy or doable to switch to a graduate engineering course and career.

Some even switch from say an English or geography degree to computing or renewable engineering; hence why it's important to have those Maths or sciences A-levels etc; Mathematics, especially, is really the foundation.

 

When you get some financial/career safety and comfort as well as social credibility, nothing stops you from writing as much as you like and you will get plenty of time or years to travel.

More importantly you will have better social capital and networks, which are even more invaluable.

 

 

 

PS: If you are both good with memorizing and enjoy people and kids, seriously consider health or medical related courses, it's awfully varied and a huge sector; you could be a good pediatrician and it's well worth to work harder few years than to struggle later.

Research, early preparation and talking to those involved is the key...

Best thing...get married to rich man/woman and live off their money while travelling and writing.

What should I become?

 

Find out. Why don't you take a year out and volunteer in different places, it might be valuable in the long run, its easy to think of random jobs without actually knowing what they entail on a daily basis. Take your time.

 

Also lots of ppl enjoy travelling and writing but v. few are travel writers or have similiarly dreamy jobs. Be practical and all the best, also take advantage of the careers advisers in your college/uni.

If i have a young son/daughter I will give them these advice having observed different people that are doing it,

 

Medicine: Great career, but demanding and need special aptitude for science and good standardized test taker.You will say goodbye to family life and live on the hospital floor for three to six years (depending on specialty) after four years of medical school and fours years of undergraduate.The end result is a job security and highly esteemed profession.You will be the top 5% of careers in North America.You will see the fruits of your years paying off at last.The competition is high and you will be tested and your patience will be rewarded at the end.Shoot for plastic surgeon, ENT, and Orthopedic...Keeps the grades high....

 

Business/IT I have friend that makes a good living only after earning an IT degree, but a lot on these sector depends on luck and connections.Majority of the people go for advanced degree like MBA and you will eventually make it with your killer resume

 

Graduate Degree in Sciences/Social Science: You will be a college professor with a decent inceome and job security if you ever become an associate professor after toiling many years as an assistant professor on a tenure track (if you lucky). I know of Somali guy that has a PHD in Pathology and does research in disease pathology with a big lab that is funded...A good career if you are curious enough.

 

Journalism: Chances are you might NOT be next Rageh Omar and if you think you have high chances of breaking in this industry go for it and you will either make it or become a PR office worker....

 

Engineering: Met couple of people who made it after they went to good Engineering Schools like Georgia Tech and MIT...You will NOT be disapointed if the economy is good and companies are hiring...

 

If you ever go to Undergraduate make sure you keep your grades high So you can have the leisure of choosing the graduate program of your choice....
