Somali town captured by Islamist fighters

December 28 2007 at 10:00AM

Mogadishu - Islamist militia on Friday took control of a town in south-central Somalia after Ethiopian soldiers withdrew overnight, witnesses said.

The Islamists, who briefly controlled much of south and central Somalia before they were ousted by Ethiopia-backed Somali government troops early this year, have since been waging near daily attacks against the joint forces.

"The Ethiopian forces withdrew from the town overnight and now I can see the former Islamic courts fighters," said Mohamed Haji Elmi, a local elder.

The Islamists took over Guriel, 300km north of the capital Mogadishu, which they had previously controlled.

Somalia has been plagued by 16 years of violence that has defied numerous bids to restore stability.

^^^Indeed and they can not capture it. Thus their power is limited to false news articles like this one. Even Shabbele the mouth of the clan courts has made the above report.

There is no Islamic Courts, what we had was a clan movement based in and around Guriceel clan

Ethiopia leaves key Somali town

Ethiopian troops have withdrawn from a key town in central Somalia.

Islamist insurgents say they now control Guriel, where Ethiopia had a big military base to secure the road linking the two countries.

A BBC correspondent in Somalia says it is not clear why the Ethiopian troops withdrew without any fighting.

Guriel was a stronghold of the Union of Islamic Courts (UIC), which lost power to Ethiopian-backed government troops a year ago this week.

The BBC's Ayanleh Hussein in Guriel says residents have been cheering the Ethiopians' departure.

During the occupation the local hospital was out of use as it was used as the Ethiopians' military base, he says.

Meanwhile, unrest continues in the capital, Mogadishu, where most Ethiopian forces in the country have been based since last year's invasion, which ended the UIC's six-month rule.

The bodies of four civilians were discovered after battles between insurgents and Ethiopian troops on Thursday around the animal market in the north of the city.

Somalia has been politically fragmented since 1991 and the country's transitional government, faced with an insurgency, is dependent on international aid and Ethiopian military support.

^^^LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL. Adeer Shabbele news site is run by the Guricel clan and if tey refuted your erlier claim then its dead.

The local clan have said there are no "court" militias or any other anti TFG ones in Guricel.

If Xasan Dahir cannot liberate his own town what is his prospects of going any where else?
