Somalia: Puntland forces forcible free hijacked ship

3 Jun 3, 2010 - 2:32:12 AM

Puntland security forces have on Thursday forcible released a hijacked ship carrying goods destined for the ports of Bosaso and Berbera, Garowe Online has learnt.

Pirates seized on Wednesday Panama-flagged, MV QSM Dubai and her 24 crewmembers comprising of Egyptian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Ghanaian nationals in the Gulf of Aden.

Said Mohamed Rage, Puntland’s Minister of Ports and Marine Transport told GO the operation was a well-coordinated one that resulted to minimum casualties and the liberation of the 15,220-tonne vessel with her 24 multinational crew.

He however, stated that the pirates have killed the ship’s Pakistani captain while three soldiers have sustained minor injuries. Seven suspected pirates have also been arrested in the operation.

Reports that reached Garowe Online said the injured soldiers are been treated by Nato forces, who also played crucial role in the rescue operation.

Mr. Rage said lamented about lack of international support to enable Puntland forces conduct such rescue missions to liberate ships and crew held against their will in Somalia’s troubled coast.

It is the third time for Puntland forces to free a hijacked ship from pirates, an action that sends clear message to the sea gangs.

Puntland government has vowed to forcible free any ships bound for its ports hijacked by ransom-hunting pirates but cautioned over ability to do the same on the foreign ships held by the sea buccaneers.

More than 20 ships and over 300 crews are currently held by pirates along the coast of Horn of Africa waiting for ransom to paid.

Very interesting... so Puntland does have a QRF, Quick Reaction Force to respond to pirate hijackings and perform hostage rescue before these ships can reach land? Who is training them, or are they relying on their past training no doubt?

Seems they are sending a strong message to pirate crews and the Intl community, good on them !

SOMALIA: Puntland forces free hijacked ship

June 3, 2010

It is not the first rescue operation by the Puntland forces. In 2008 and 2009, Puntland forces succesfully freed two hijacked ships, rescuing the hostages and arresting almost 20 pirates.

“We can’t allow pirates to hijack all Somali-bound cargo ships, this will seriously hurt our economy and the poor people of Somalia,” Mr. Raage said.

Puntland leaders have previously criticized the lack of aid from foreign powers to help the region fight piracy. In 2009 Puntland state requested $20 million dollars annually to combat domestic piracy.

In Puntland, prisons are stretched to their limits with more than 300 arrested pirates and Puntland needed assistance to increase its jail capacity say officials.

Somali pirates are currently holding at least 19 vessels and several hundred crew members. Piracy had emerged as an industry for a wide range of people, including brokers and facilitators, disrupting the region’s traditional economy.

They have the forces to rescue hijacked shipped but only for ships destined for Somali ports. Puntland does not have the resources to rescue every ship. However, if NATO forces had any sense of how to stop this criminal activity in the high seas, they would have help Puntland to do a better job instead of wasting millions of dollars patrolling the high seas everyday.

Good news but Puntland should be doing this more often. eh.

Puntland should also consider executiion as a punishment considering they have filled out the prisons.

QSM Dubai is one of a long list of vessels to be hijacked in the area Soldiers from Somalia's semi-autonomous Puntland region have stormed a Panama-flagged cargo vessel held by pirates, a Puntland minister has said.

The pirates, who refused to surrender, killed the captain of the ship, he said.

There was a brief shoot-out with the seven pirates before they were captured, he added.

The pirates seized the 15,000-tonne ship, MV QSM Dubai, in the Gulf of Aden in the early hours of Wednesday.

"Our troops stormed the Panama-flagged vessel and engaged the pirates. There was brief fighting before they defeated them," Said Mohamed Raage, Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, said.

"We arrested seven pirates after they killed the captain of the ship."

The vessel has a crew of 24 made up of Ghanaian, Egyptian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi nationals, and was taking supplies to northern Somalia.

It was sailing from Brazil in the "internationally recommended transit corridor" in the gulf when it was seized.

Puntland, which declared itself an autonomous state within Somalia in 1998, has been used by pirates as a base of operations.

On Wednesday, the crew of a Libyan-owned merchant ship seized by Somali pirates in the Gulf of Aden were reported to have recaptured their vessel.

Security forces from Somalia's Puntland region have stormed a Panama-flagged cargo vessel held by pirates, freeing the ship's crew.

However, the pirates killed the Pakistani captain of the MV QSM Dubai during the confrontation on Wednesday, according to a Somalian government official.

"Our troops stormed the Panama-flagged vessel and engaged the pirates," Said Mohamed Raage, the ports and marine transport minister, said on Thursday.

"There was brief fighting before they defeated them.

"We arrested seven pirates after they killed the captain of the ship."

Two Somali soldiers were injured in the gun battle, which freed 24 crew members from Egypt, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Ghana.

Somali forces decided to use force after the pirates refused to surrender, Raage said.

The ship was carrying sugar from Brazil to Bossaso, a city in northern Somalia, he said.

The 15,220 tonne MV QSM Dubai was captured by pirates while it was travelling inside of the internationally recommended transit corridor.

Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in northern Somalia, is a base for pirate gangs targeting ships in the Gulf of Aden.

But the area is generally more peaceful than the rest of the country.
