Mr. Thankful,

Adeer, I think you have difficulty in processing simple informations. Since, the fact that it was the police who firstly raided the house, which was a "suspect" to begin with, seemed to be to you, as some kind of a group of gunmen attacking something in the first place. ;)

And, secondly, as I said earlier, the police were keeping these folks in their site, previously; hence, when the police arrived at the house, and the criminals knew they will face the music, only then have they decided to start shooting at the police. So that they either will get away or failing that, then, they thought they shall go out with blaze of glory and bullets ringing in their ears, indeed.

Thirdly, the police seemed to have recovered all manner of "explosives materials" on the first house that they have raided it; which in turn will indicate the deadly intent of these people.

And, lastly, perhaps, unbeknownst to you; this was not the first time, in which Al-Shabaab outfit have tried their daring nonsense in Somaliland. In fact, we are old hands in disrupting their plans against us; hence, the reason that so many of their "operatives" are in our jails and cooling their heels in there.

Similarly, again, perhaps you do not know, but they did strike us with a "suicide attack", few years ago (and, to be precise it was 2008). Therefore, I do not know where you get the information that says Al-Shabaab never have attacked Somaliland, previously.

All in all, adeer, to wish things to be the way you wanted it to be or reasoned it, is one thing; but to expect the reality to always fit in nice with your "preconceived ideas" is, mind you, entirely different kettle of fish, indeed... smile.gif

Regards,

Oodweyne.

Thankful

My point to you is that things are a little to early to come to conclusions, especially when you allege that 7 people are arrested and being interrogated! It is also very easy to blame all problems on groups that are based outside the region!I.e. Al Shabaab taking over a home and making a base in Burco the heart of the secessionists dream!

Also not once did I say that Al Shabaab never attacked in the north, maybe you need to review what i said, of course they have committed cowardly suicide bombings and assasination. But to set up a home with gunmen and bombs as you say in the middle of Burco is quite bold!!

P.S The more I start reading into this, the more I get this feeling that it is in the realm of possibility that this whole event was fabricated to gain more attention about the imaginary plight NW Somalia's government is facing! You came to a conclusion about the events way to quickly!! But - it's hust a conspiracy theory!

Thankful,

I am sure it never have occurred to you that one has a relatives of this town you are only hearing it's news from the wire-services; hence, one could possibly know one or two things of what one is talking about in here, indeed. ;)

But, then, since you seemed to think that, this was indeed a "conspiracy theory" or at least something that we in Somaliland have get up to, as a way of really "manufacturing" this deadly confrontation in the middle of one of our towns, so that we may get the "sympathy" (as you seemed to be alleging there) of the outside world, then, really there is nothing one can say to you in here, other than, to say, that, if it makes you sleep at night rather easily, then, by all means, see to it to knock yourself with it, indeed, dear lad...

As Xaji posted in another thread! What does Hall Mark of trouble makers mean! I'm pretty sure if they are going to attack somewhere they are more then trouble makers. Well done NW Somalia in getting some publicity for the elections.

Hargeysa,(QRN) - Somaliland police arrested 11 people in possession of firearms and explosives on Thursday in the breakaway republic but lost one officer killed in the raid, a spokesperson said.

"They had explosives and other materials that are used for bomb making. There were seven men and four women with the hallmark of trouble makers," the spokesperson for the police force in Burao where the raid took place told journalists.

"The material was for suicide attacks; some of the arrested are suspected to be potential suicide bombers," he said, adding that police "were following the group after tips from local people".

Those arrested attempted to resist when police launched their raid. An exchange of gunfire ensued in which one police officer was killed and two others wounded, the spokesperson said.

Burao is the second-largest city in Somaliland, which broke away from the rest of Somalia in May 1991 but has not yet been recognised by the outside world.

Somaliland has scheduled June 26 as the date for presidential elections, already postponed three times since 2008.

A recent internal UN report, a copy of which was seen by AFP, said there was a risk of suicide attacks on hotels or other buildings housing international observers monitoring the June 26 elections.

The report also spoke of the recent arrival in Somaliland of nine young men trained by the Shebaab to carry out suicide attacks.

In October 2008, 24 people, including UN staff, were killed in Hargeysa in a suicide attack for which the Shebaab claimed responsibility.

^^"Publicity" for the election, heh, dear lad... :D:D

I really think you need to give up seeing this ever consuming "cynical ghost" of yours in every corner; since it seems to be tellling you, rather seductively, as to how we in Somaliland are in the habit of "engineering" everything as nothing more than a "publicity stunt". Even a deadly clash like this one, indeed... ;)

Not that your way of seeing things is anything to me to begin with. After all, in honesty your view of this thing is essentially nothing more than a water over duck's back, indeed.

But, still I gather, that it may have helped your case against Somaliland, particularly, were you to have been conducting your argument on a different "line of critique" than this one. Since, this one that you are parading it now in here will not at all make others to take you or for that matter, your argument that seriously, indeed.

Given that, at heart of it, it gives the game away, in the sense of "broadcasting" to others that you haven't got any two decent arguments to rub together in here, at all... icon_razz.gif

But, then, again, that me and how I reasoned with things; which, mind you, I readily admit, it's not everyone's cup of tea (as it were)..

Regards,

Oodweyne.

^^Taleexi, Jimce wanaagsan, oo wacan, xaaji. Laakiin waxaan ku qosley, sida fudud ee aad u liqdey, in Mr. Rayaale arintan ka danbeeyey. Taas oo ah arin sida kan yar ee Thanful layidhaahdo uu aad u aaminsan yahay. Markaa waxaan islahaa, inta caqliga saaxiibka u ahi, ma rumeysan doonaan in arrintan mashaqada ah ee Burco ka dhacdey, ay tahay arrin "Mr. Rayaale iyo xukuumadiisu ay Hargeisa kusoo kariyeen"... ;)

Police clashed with an armed group on Thursday in Somaliland’s second city of Burao leaving one dead and two injured.

Residents in the October neighbourhood of Burao notified police when they became suspicious of the behaviour of a group of men who recently moved into one of the homes in the area.

The police arrived shortly after midday and tried to investigate the house. The neighbours suspicious was confirmed when the armed men opened fire on the police, injuring two and killing one of the senior officers.

The police over powered the group and arrested eleven people including four women. The police also seized large amounts of small arms, bomb building materials, hand grenades, sacks of explosives and other devices.

Somaliland Police Commissioner, Gen. Mohammad Saqadi Gubad said the group were a sleeper cell for Somalia’s radical Al-shabab militants who wanted to cause mayhem ahead of the elections in the country.

“I want to thank the police forces of Togdher for their bravery who thwarted a plot to target party leaders and disturb the elections,” he told local reporters in Burao.

He added an investigation was underway to determine exactly how they sneaked into the country and to determine how many other members are still in hideout.

Last month, Somalilandpress received a report from Mogadishu that Al-Shabab has recruited and sent nine Somaliland nationals to Somaliland after receiving their trainings in the Bakol region of Somalia for the last three years. It is not clear if it is the same group or another cell.

The report added the soul purpose of their mission was to spoil the elections, a practice they regard as Western institution. It is not the first time radical groups tried to carry out acts of terrorism during elections.

The leader of Al-Shabab, Ahmed Godane (adopted name: Sheik Mokhtar Abu-Zubeyr), who is also a native of Somaliland received his extremist training in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mr Godane received an accounting scholarship to study in Pakistan funded by Saudi millionaires, he use to occasionally travel to Afghanistan during his school breaks.

Godane returned to Somaliland in late 2001 and by 2002, he started a plot to create a northern-wing for Somalia’s Al-Ittihad al-Islami, an armed militant, founded in the 90s. Mr Godane preached at the Abu-Bashir mosque in Hargeisa. He landed an accounting job at the Al Barakat office in Hargeisa, later the U.S. government listed Al-Barakat as terrorist organisation, accusing them of providing or transferring funds for radical groups.

He was able to recruit and radicalise a small group who would later carry out attacks including the killing of Analena Tonelli, an Italian aid worker working in Borame hospital, the killing of British couples in Sheikh and hijacked a vehicle belong to WFP.

The Somaliland police responded by killing or arresting many of his followers including Jama Kutiye, a senior member of the group and a close friend of Mr Godane.

After releasing most of his friends were either killed or in prison, Mr Godane found the perfect route to escape at the perfect time. Just as he felt the net was closing on him, the war between Islamic Courts Union (ICU) and the Ethiopians broke out in Southern Somalia.

In 2006, he escaped from Somaliland forces into the Somali region of Ethiopia and before arriving in southern Somalia, taking arms against the Ethiopians. Mr Godane decided to change his name to Abu Zubeyr and rose to the General Secretary of the Islamic Courts Union.

After the split of ICU, Mr Godane joined Aden Hashi Farah “Ayro” and his long term friend, also a Somalilander and a US citizen, Ibrahim Hajji Jama “Afghani” to form Al Shabab (The Youth), they seen themselves younger than the other group led by Sheikh Dahir Aweys, a Somali-Ethio 1977 war veteran.

Even though Mr Godane has no influence in Somaliland – it is easy to radicalise many of the youth, as unemployment is over 80 per cent, many disapprove of the current administration and Ethiopian ties.

However, many of his recruiters, financiers and aids are in Somaliland prisons and it’s these prisoners that the French government has requested Somaliland to release so Mr Godane can release the French agent.

The president who understands the dangers of releasing the aid and personal friends of Ahmed Godane, has rejected their request. More front lines could open if President Rayale was to please the French. Not only are these men dangerous – they could be psychological boost for Mr Godane, a friend, a companion, a childhood memory, a Somalilander.
