A Somali Train Service.

 

 

Nomads, as you have been accustomed to, eNuri Enterprises is proud to launch a new community train service in line with our entrepreNurial ventures such as Road Map To Paradise, eNuri Opticians Fashion and Medical Eye Wear, Five Star Hasanaat Restaurants and Consumer Qiyaamah Calculators.

 

As we gear up for a new era in Somalia, we feel that many Somalis are beginning to enjoy a better vision for the future, hungry for Hasanaat and now, many Somalis are asking for the Somali train to take of to Happinessland.

 

To deliver these tired Nomads to their destination, Happinessland, eNuri Mass Transport Consultants are glad to assist in the launching of this train service.

 

Before we launch this new train service, eNuri Mass Transport Consultants would like to narrate a historical background and drivers of the stakeholders of this proposed Train Service to determine the best operator of this train service.

 

 

1. The Somali Masses ( All of them want to travel to Happinessland )

 

2. Few Somalis who suffer from Vision problems who care less of the right destination are only interested in a joy ride. They have attempted to disrupt the service for the past 18 years on behalf of a competing train operator. After they failed, they invited the competition and their logistical supplier from overseas to take over the train service by force in order to change destination to a different direction of their own interest, not in the interest of the Somali Masses.

 

3. As a result, Many passengers were inconvenienced in that process and a lot of confusion resulted in chaos when majority of passengers stubbornly insisted on their original destination of Happinessland.

 

4. This problem prompted public outcry demanding change of train management for the train service.

 

5. The Somali people firmly stood behind a group of honest volunteering transportation operators who convincingly proved their conceptual design for the National Transport System for six months consequentially in Mogadishu and vicinities. The system worked so well, that for the first time in 15 years, the new technocrats succeeded in operating a flawless train service that earned them the envy of the competition.

 

6. The competing train operator was alarmed about this popular train system and began to worry about the spread of this service to regions it poorly manages at present. It reasoned that in the case of this system's full operation, that it might attract its passengers from poorly served areas that it claims to be part of its service domain. As a result, it sought help from its Master Operator and logistical supplier for assistance to take over the Somali train system in order to change the train destination from Happinessland to horrorland. The Competition with the assistance of local criminals succeeded in disrupting the train service, but failed to put their trains on track for over two years due to stiff resistance from the popular train operators.

 

7. In the following two years, the ousted Somali train operators became fragmented and confused, some of them out of desperation reasoned that since the Somali people are stranded and tired of this non ending service suspension, that they need a train service regardless of the destination. They decided to cooperate with the local agents of the foreign train operator who is known for taking unsuspecting passengers to the wrong destination. (They Promise to take them to Happinessland, when in fact the train is heading toward Horrorland)

 

8. Consequently, another faction argued that the train service must serve the real need of the people even if the people are too tired from continuous service disruptions, going to the wrong destination is not worth a short peaceful train ride. They reasoned that no matter how long it takes, they will never compromise on the people's choice of Happinessland as their destination, even if the competition has international franchise rights of Train Operation in Somalia. Somalia belongs to Somalis, who have the sole right to determine the destination of their trains, not to the International Train Operators Union and their local franchisee.

 

 

Based on the above history who is more qualified to take us to Happinessland?

Nur’s narrative is based on incorrect historical accounts, which resulted in exceedingly biased way of framing the question. Commoners of SOL, I suggest, deserve to hear a narrative that’s approximately closer to the truth before they are led to study wrong material as it were for the exam.

They decided for instance to buy substantial shares from the original Kenya group, which by mid 2006 established foothold in the southern market. Negotiations started in distant capitals, and progress was made. The top management were vigilant the presence of external forces poised to meddle in and influence the outcome of these negotiations. Their strategy was simple in concept. They wanted to defend their markets in solidifying their current services in those markets, while positioning to capture other markets as they emerge.Some middle managers and train operators however quietly refused to get onboard with the new strategy and started to undermine by releasing marketing promotions and campaigns intended and designed for distant future and markets that are yet to show promise for growth.

 

Secondly, as defiant middle managers in the firm undermined the top leadership, competitors especially the Kenya group noticed the opening and strategize to take the fullest advantage possible. The Kenya group hit new campaigns in the market designed to stimulate these middle managers that were in the first place resolved to oppose their firms new strategy. Middle managers gave the kind of response Kenya group wanted and attacked a train lane near Baydhabo, which Kenya exploration team spotted earlier and brought construction equipments to start a green field investment. The Kenya group and its backers seized the opportunity and attacked live train services and exacted huge, colossal damages to the transportation infrastructure, firms headquarters, and even hubs where customers board and un-board trains. The top managers and their vision of growth were irreversibly undermined by first their middle managers and then by the external competitors which always wanted to get rid of them and the take the market.

 

Some of the top managers decided to bring the firm back by clearing managerial barriers that they had previously ignored and then constituting it by entering negotiation to get the markets their train service dominated back. Others had convinced themselves that the only way to get those markets is not through negotiation, but by fighting, disrupting whatever service the aggressor firm sat up until they withdraw from these markets. Both strategies got underway simultaneously aiming same objectives while taking different means.

 

The Kenya group finally yielded ground and gave back not only the original markets but succumbed to demands to restructure its original org chart so the real stakeholders of Somalia's transportation Service are reflected and resources are managed and allocated to address people’s real needs.

 

Remember the middle managers and train operators? This new framework did not sit well with them and so they started protesting not the business objectives but the train destination. The new group responded that train destination is strategically set but may be gradually altered due to logistical constrains. The people, the customers whose needs this train’s launched to meet, agreed. Most middle managers disagreed but majority of train operators are beginning to come on board with the new strategy and framework.

 

Add to that the top management is almost from the same genre save from few additions due to the new acquisition.

 

Based on the above history who is more qualified to take us to Happinessland?

 

 

1- angry train operators and middle managers, who are good at implementing tactical milestones but lack analytical fortitude to get to the final destination?

 

2- Prudent leaders, who when undermined and significantly disrupted, managed to get back up and revived the service for the people once again?

Brother, I couldn't help smiling in Salat today, (sheitan stole my prayers!) that was really humorous!

 

 

Xiin bro. yours is indeed a valid counter point, the discussion now will be heading toward historical accuracy of the development of this new transport system, its technological structure, its managers, scope of its work, the competing visions of the competing system architects, immediate objectives, quick wins, mitigating risks, scoping risk impact and setting controls for identified risks.

Bro Nur, put it another way, the strategy of what i would call top management of the original train service, which as you noted enjoyed unravalled brand recognition in somalia, had three components

1- attack by penetrating new markets

2- grow by solidifying newly gained markets

3- defend by poinering unimitable product deferentiation

 

we could go in each of those strategies and give examples how well they have implemented in the first 5 months in Mogadishu.

 

the problem of what i would call middle management and low level operators of that train service was not paying enought attention to implement strategy # 2. As a business man you know strategy # 1 and # 3 will yield too many balls in the air with no particular skills to leverage.

Events in Somalia are progressing so fast, I can't follow the script that our "train operators" is reading.

 

I think that the Train Operators Union out of expediency has agreed to change the "Train Banner" to read " Paradise through Sharia Implementation"

 

If this banner is the right banner, I have no problem, but weary travelers are very suspicious of the timing of this decision and the acceptance of the new Banner.

 

Anyway, InshAllah, I will come back with more analysis of this unfolding history before our eyes.

ps Somali entrepreneurs need to really start building railways across Somalia, i always wondered why the previous governments who had the resources simply decided not to build them(i know this is not what the discussion is about, but it stimulated my mind into thinking about a potential 'Railway industry in Somalia')

Exactly brother that would be awesome, in Holland the train routes are intentionally placed through the most breathtaking areas of that country and you really get a sense of the beauty and unity of that land when you take a train from Amsterdam to let's say Eindhoven.
