Interview with Commander of Mujahideen Forces in Chechnya, Shamil Basayev

Q1: Commander Shamil : Assalamu Alaikum wa

Rahmatu-Allah wa Barakatuh , how are you and the other

commanders?

Alhamdulillah (All Praises be to Allah), we are all in

a good state of health, our spirits are high and we

are working to achieve a fast victory InshAllah.

Q2: How is the situation here, and what is the latest?

Our resistance increases daily against the Russian

aggressors and their losses are great. In the last few

days of May, more than 400 Russian soldiers and

officers were killed, including one general.

Furthermore, more than 50 vehicles were destroyed. The

Russians continue to conduct daily inspection and

cleansing operations in the villages, but all they

really do is rob and clean the civilians' pockets.

However, they cannot hurt the Mujahideen InshAllah. In

some regions, Russian soldiers personally warn the

Mujahideen to leave the villages because they are

afraid to engage us and get killed. Also by Allah's

grace, we continue to kill many of the hypocrites. The

people now understand that this war is primarily

targeted towards for the destruction and killing of

Muslims and not just the "terrorists" as they claim.

Alhamdullilah, the people now strongly support the

Mujahideen. Allahu-Akbar.

Q3: What is the news of the Mujahideen Military

Command Council (MMCC)? Does it have a noticeable

influence on this war?

Alhamdullilah, the MMCC planned well for the Jihad

this summer and - thanks to Allah - our execution has

been ideal. The council has had a noticeable effect on

this war because we are not only fighting for the

obvious goals we aim to achieve, but also to attain

Allah's mercy. We also desire to further benefit the

Muslim Ummah and Jihad.

Q4: We heard about negotiations with the Russians and

of rumours of a Russian withdrawal. Has there been any

truth to these claims?

The Russians have been talking about negotiations for

a long time. They are laying the groundwork for their

escape. However, the MMCC has refused and will always

refuse to negotiate with them in any manner that

contradicts the Islamic Shari'a. What took place in

the past proved to be a hoax aiming to convince the

world into believing that the war here had ended. As

for the withdrawal, they first spoke about it last

winter. They withdrew 5000 but deployed another 15000.

Alhamdulillah, we are at a stage where these numbers

make no difference for us. InshAllah the more we kill,

the greater our reward from Allah.

Q5: What do you expect will happen in the future?

The condition of the traitors and hypocrites continues

to worsen and their losses are great. We have dubbed

this spring/summer initiative "Russian Hell in Qoqaz -

2001". Alhamdulillah the resistance intensifies and

our forces unify with every passing day. The Russians

today are trying to cause division within our ranks

and are desperate to fully enable the hypocrites. It

has not worked and InshAllah it will not work in the

future. Their funds are dwindling and their ammunition

will soon diminish too. InshAllah, they will be left

with nothing to fire at us. This is a summary of what

I expect to happen.

Q6: How is the morale of the Russian army and do you

have any statistics for their losses until now?

You mean the morale of the pigs and dogs? The soldiers

are driven here like slaves. The mercenaries only come

for the money. You can see their moral on TV for

yourself. Last year, they were jumping in front of the

cameras and always gave reporters their names and

ranks. Now, they cover their faces and are afraid to

give any information about themselves because they

know that we will, InshAllah, defeat and kill them.

Even the Russian generals now don't believe that they

will triumph. The army has become very undisciplined

busy robbing civilians. Even the soldiers and officers

building military bases in Khankla and Atmagl ask,

"Why do we build when we will leave here soon?" Their

belief in victory has completely vanished. As for

their losses, they definitely don't report them

(accurately). I would estimate that to know the real

losses, multiply their reported number 20 times.

Obviously, our statistics are not precise but what is

important is that we continue to obliterate their

army. There only remain a few skilled soldiers in

their interior ministry, the police, the MVD, and

reconnaissance because of the sheer numbers that we

killed. And we will InshAllah kill off the remaining

few.

Q7: Explosions and disasters have been on the rise

within Russia itself. In your opinion, what are the

reasons behind them? Also do you expect them to

continue or stop, knowing that the Russian government

blame the Mujahideen, especially yourself and Khattab?

Over here we have an expression, "Dogs bark, and the

caravan moves on". There is a lot of killing in

Russia, and it increases as a punishment from Allah

for their disbelief. As for the explosions, the MMCC

does not use such tactics nor occupy itself with such

matters. We are well aware that the Chechen people

continue to be subjected to destruction and murder.

Thus, every Chechen has the right to stop the murder

and destruction in any way they find appropriate. As

for the MMCC, our condition is good and we don't have

to resort to such tactics. As for the Russian

accusations, I previously said "Dogs bark, and the

caravan moves on". We couldn't care less what they

say.

Q8: What have the Russians achieved so far in this

conflict that is about to begin its third year?

Since the war started two years ago, tens of thousands

of Russian soldiers have been killed and a similar

number wounded. They have spent enormous amounts of

money hoping to destroy an entire generation of the

Chechen people but Alhamdullilah they have not been

successful. The Russians would love for their legends

of destruction and power to continue to live in the

eyes of the west. The result is that we have become

much stronger than two years ago. Today, if the

Russians decide to leave our lands, we will not leave

them alone. We will hunt them down and kill them to

make sure that they don't consider coming back again.

Q9: In your opinion and the opinions of the field

commanders, what is the solution to the Chechen

problem?

1. Immediate withdrawal of all Russian troops.

2. Releasing the 25,000 plus Chechen prisoners from

Russian concentration camps.

3. Repairing all material and psychological

destruction caused by the war.

When these points are achieved, we can think about

solving the Chechen problem.

Q10: Chechnya is a small republic. How do you explain

Russia's failure to conclude the war, finish off the

Mujahideen, and capture the senior commanders?

First of all, don't forget that we are not fighting to

establish power or presence. We fight first and

foremost by the blessings of Allah and then by the

resistance of the world Muslims. We are few here, but

we feel the unity of the Muslim Ummah and the effect

of their duaa (supplications) for us. As for the

senior commanders, InshAllah, the Russians will never

be able to capture them. Our commanders are not

sitting down playing games waiting for the Russians to

come and get them but are continuously planning and

executing attacks against the Russians. InshAllah, we

will annihilate the Russians by Allah's power and we

hope for his mercy upon us.

Q11: We heard some commanders were urging young Muslim

men to come to Chechnya and become "Ansaar" (foreign

Mujahideen). What is your advise to the potential

Ansaar?

I'm personally not aware of this call but Jihad is not

a duty in Chechnya alone. Today, all Muslim lands are

bowing to the infidels, so Jihad is a duty on every

Muslim throughout the world. FIRST AND FOREMOST, I

URGE THE YOUNG MUSLIMS TO UNITE UNDER A SINGLE

COMMAND, AFTER THAT, WE CAN DO ANYTHING INSHALLAH.

WITHOUT UNITY, ALL OF OUR EFFORTS WILL BE SIMPLE AND

WEAK. What I am trying to say is that Jihad is not

only obligatory in Chechnya but everywhere and THE

MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT IS UNITY.

Q12: What are the most critical needs of Mujahideen?

And how much does it cost to train and arm a Mujahid?

We only need one thing; The mercy of Allah the

Glorious. We seek His mercy and pray for His help.

Generally everything is well. I don't say we have

everything we need but we are satisfied with what we

have.

Q13: Any last words you would like to direct to the

Muslims?

I say to our Muslim brothers and sisters -

ALLAHU-AKBAR. The Muslims today are standing up again.

The one main remaining goal is for everyone to UNITE

and strengthen themselves together. The more we unite

the more powerful we will be and the less problems we

will have amongst ourselves. The sooner we unite, the

more we will cut our losses. Let us understand that

Islam will be victorious and every Muslim has the

opportunity to share in this victory without

necessarily having to come here. I want to urge every

Muslim to be proud of being a Muslim and to carry the

banner of Islam high with honour and dignity for it is

a blessing. I also want to say may Allah reward all

the Muslims that are helping us at this difficult

stage of Jihad. For those simple Muslims around the

world who can only help us with duaa, I say see the

effect of your duaa. Indeed, the victory will be ours

InshAllah because of the duaa of our simple people. We

ask every Muslim to pray to Allah for us and we would

like to inform them that we make also make duaa to

Allah for them. Finally, I would love to thank and

praise Allah for allowing us to live as Muslims, for

it is He that has guided us through His mercy to

struggle in His cause. ALLAHU-AKBAR and Assalamu

Alaikum Wa Rahmatu-Allah Wa Barakatuh.
