US warships in Somaliland for naval base

Two US warships have arrived at Somaliland after the ruler of the self-proclaimed republic offered to host a US naval base there.

During US Defense Secretary Robert Gates' visit to Djibouti late last year, the US military expressed interest in security coordination with Somaliland government that can offer greater potential for US military presence in the Horn of Africa nation.

Somaliland welcomed the US initiative.

Dahir Rayale Kahin, president of the former British protectorate that broke away from war-torn Somalia in 1991, said he wanted the US to put a military base at the northeastern port of Berbera as part of efforts to win international recognition, Press TV correspondent in Somalia reports.

Kahin, who visited Washington and hosted the top US diplomat for Africa early this year, also expressed high hopes for finding oil in his land.

A planned auction of oil licenses will give priority to US oil companies holding concessions from the 1980s, he said.

Somaliland's president, Kahin, took office when Somaliland founder Mohamed Ibrahim Egal died in 2002. Kahin, from the minority Gadabursi clan, was elected the following year with a margin of just 80 votes out of 490,000.

Some of US really support them in their fight against the Taliban and alqaida and their toppling of the Saddom regime. when you say that some us would support the US over "our muslim brothers", not all us see the world as America vs. muslims. Bosnia, Kosovo, their response to tsunamis in Indonesia, operation restore hope, and getting rid of repressive dictatorial regimes like Saddom's and the that of Taliban not mention the lunatics headed by Bin Laden are just some example of America doing good for the mujslim world. as for your question, i would't mind if Sudan was bombed today and that would do something about Durfur and as for as Israel, forget the Americans, i would like us to have working relationship with Israelis.

Waka caqliga somalida what has Sudan done for you and Somalis absolutely nothing . For years they have been supporting Palestinians and there war against he jews aniga maxa iga gallay jews falastiin Come one man Think about ur self one time what has Sudan for Somaliland they are the biggest obstacle of Somaliland recognition alongside Egypt, The free world is on our side. Now and no Arab can spoil my Fun with The Americans now

STOIC

Lander,

Djibouti was the only African country to participate in the US government safe skies for African program. I’m sure they have received assistance to improve their airport and infrastructure. Djibouti being the host of only US military bases in sub-Saharan Africa (the combined joined task force-Horn Africa) they should have been far up there in terms of prosperity with the rest of young and upcoming African economies.. The world today is divided into three categories; the one that demands to be heard, the one that demands to be told and one that demands to be left alone. Somaliland falls under the category of the countries to be told what to do (so is the rest of Somalia). We must see the world for what It is today and play along with it. Somaliland is a poor country which is incapable of shaping its own economy. Many countries in the middle East can huff about their strong disagreement with the America at their own will since they can cause inflation in the world by single handedly cause economic distress by boycotting with their oil. Our overriding reason of allowing America in Somaliland soil should be because of our dare need of all sort of assistance we can get. You can only preside over a happy family if you give your kids their basic needs. Somaliland is not in a state of stable father yet. If America will increase the gross national product of Somaliland I’m all for it since every society needs the opportunity to participate in prosperity! Somaliland today doesn’t need to hear the sounds of punctuating whack of mortar fire.

You just go and read the stuff aloud in Somalia in any major Somali City...I would like to see the reaction you will get!

I wouldn't surpised if some people advocated for a return of the Italians, French and Italian to recolonise Somalia. Wale waa yaab!

Warmoog

One troubling turn of events after another.

Berbera has been the seemingly accursed subject of recurring American interest for a number of years. In December, it was even reported in the Washington Post that there was debate within the US government over whether to continue supporting the TFG or shift support to Somaliland and basically use it as a new launch pad in its global War of Terror. Then there was the announcement last month when Riyaale said he invited the US to use Berbera as a military base. Now this.

Nothing good will come of it.
