Legal Experts Pore over Legal Implications of Ethio-Somaliland MoU

Legal experts deliberated on the legal implications of the historic Memorandum of Understanding inked between Ethiopia and Somaliland in early January.

The consultation forum, facilitated by the Federal Institute of Justice & Law, provided a platform for detailed analysis and discussion on the legality of Ethiopia’s quest for access to sea.

A paper detailing the legal implications of the MoU in the eyes of international law by Wondmagegn Tadesse (PhD), a law professor from the Addis Ababa University (AAU) was the centerpiece of the discussion.

Tadesse’s paper delved into the intricate facets of Ethiopia's engagement, shedding light on the nation's legitimate claim to a port.

Legal experts suggested insights into the international legality of this accord, assessing its implications and adherence to legal norms. Ethio-Somaliland MoU was thoroughly examined through the lens of international law.

A plethora of experts have time and again suggested that Ethiopia’s peaceful quest for fair and reliable commercial-military access to the sea is legitimate in terms of international law and aimed at preemptively averting economically driven crises that could threaten regional stability.

International law grants all landlocked countries international legal right to obtain reliable access to the sea.

Suggestions were made regarding the necessity of establishing mechanisms to exercise this fundamental right.//

Step up the game for abiye though this seems bad because he will lose income from the eu for their troops in Somalia . How ever the question we should ask our selves if the Ethiopians leave who is going to fill the vacuum so far abiye seems not willing to back down with the mou with somaliland  and so is biixi.  For abiye securing a sea out post is far more significant then anything for he wants to join the hall of all greats of Ethiopia like Haile sellasie who secured eritrea during the 1940s. Or menelik who kept the Italians away from Ethiopia. His biggest struggle will remain the Amhara but he has a strategy  to strangle them using both his galla forces galla extremist and the tigrayans on the other part they seem to be close , if he just can keep on isolating isias not messing with his plans against Amhara  then he will live another day . Another game changer is the Turkish involvement on the side of Somalia Turks have also good ties with Ethiopia. If they can manage to bring hassan and abiye together to compromise on. Something  hassan biggest issue is Ethiopia recognition for Somaliland if the Turks convince the Ethiopians to back down on that . Part of the deal and sign a new deal with Somalia to get access to the sea via Somalia with a similar lease  agreement . Hasssan will take it though this would mean that the Ethiopians still get their sea but hassan gave the Turks 10 year deal for nothing since there won’t be a threat u never know maybe Ethiopians will come back and later claim lands in Somalia u never know with Ethiopians in this scenario though Somaliland will be the loser  and relations with bixi and abiye will go bad . But the question is do the Ethiopians want a sea out let from Somalia they prefer the golf of Aden and the Red Sea 

 

all in all this can all end of Somalia and somaliland sign deals among themselves  but that is unlikely knowing Somalis and being  stubborn no one wants to blink and see the the bigger picture .
