Dubai: Encouraging citizens to marry, and thereby reducing the rates of spinsterhood and divorce are the main strategic objectives of a programme 'The successful marriage, half a moon', launched by Dubai Women Association.

The programme focuses on family issues, especially divorce, as there has been an increase in the number of divorces among newlyweds.

Afra Al Hai, executive manager of the Al Nahda Centre for Consultations and Training, had said these problems are increasing.

"According to figures from Dubai Courts, the highest number of divorce cases involved couples who had been married for one to five years. We launched this programme in February last year. The programme aims at focusing on family stability, marital life and securing the elements of a decent life for Emirati families," she said.

A number of Emirati consultants provide free consultations, rehabilitation and training courses for couples who are about to get married and for newlyweds.

Book launched

As part of the association's continuous efforts in strengthening family ties and helping couples start a healthy married life, the association announced the launch of a book named Successful Marriage to give the couples handy tips on starting married lives, coping with challenges and maintaining family stability.

The book consists of three main chapters which discuss ideas such as future planning strategies which highlight the right planning as it is an obvious signal of progress and culture, as well as highlighting the benefits of 'Successful marriage, half a moon' programme.

The second chapter discusses the magic key for successful marriage, rejuvenating a stagnant marital life by being transparent and truthful to each other, respecting mutual feelings, being patient in distress, being confident and trusting each other and sacrificing for each other.

The third chapter focuses on saying yes to the three "Nos", no to spinsterhood, no to divorce and no to family breakups and instability.

"This book contains the most precious advice for a bride and groom, as it highlights the most humanly scared bond between two human beings in compliance with the instructions of Allah," said Fatima Al Falasy, Director General of Dubai Women Association during the book launch.

She said the book is an attempt to promote supporting for the programme and the campaign of successful marriage and emphasise the importance of marital life and say yes to the mechanisms of a successful marriage.

Fatima said the book will be distributed for free among couples taking part in the successful marriage programme. Later the book will be made available to public libraries for everyone's benefit, as the book does not have a certain target and is published in Arabic and English.

Afra said the programme also has a suggestion of forming family security wallet, to contribute in helping families with the marriage expenses in cooperation with local banks and the Central Bank of the UAE.

"The Central Bank has shown enormous support to this programme and the book which in turn should encourage other establishments in the country to play their role in safeguarding society by supporting family ties," she said.

In my opinion, unpredictability of women is a main reason of conflict and divorce.

I do agree that divorce rates are increasing by the day. Prices are rising so much that many couples are forced to work for long hours leaving less time for them to spend together and with their families. This increases conflicts and family issues and it could certainly lead to divorce.

I think there are many reasons for these high divorce rates. They could be different expectations, the fast life we lead, or the fact that both partners need to work day and night to be able to provide for their family especially with the price rises. A book could be published about this. It could state the different causes and ways of preventing when it comes to divorce.

Affection, understanding, faith, love, and respect for each other are the reasons behind a successful marriage. Nowadays, couples tend to expect a lot and they get impatient quickly. These things might be some causes of the high divorce rates we see.

A successful marriage is entirely based on trust, honesty, respect and love for each other. Any relationship based on trust will never have two people misguided to go away from each other.

A successful marriage is based on the word of God and his divine principles. Divorce is high amongst young people, because they have neglected their faith and belief; they no longer have the fear of God. Changing ethos have nothing to do with the institution of marriage. The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.

I think the high divorce rates are a result of arrogance and lack of compromise. I also think that getting married at a young age may be a reason for conflict and divorce. Marriage life is based on trust and compromise from both sides.

In a place like Dubai, this issue certainly needs attention. I think that because many newlyweds living here are not able to fulfil their requirements due to rising costs of living, conflict might arise. Financial security is defiantly one of the main factors that determine marriage success

this is something similar to what I was talking about in the other topic that our youth need some organization and system set up to help them go through these tough times...But there is definitely a since of impatience with our generation but at the same time people aren't spending time to find out what the getting into before rushing in...Definitely should have some pre-marital counseling for any couples considering marriage.
