Interesting quote on Somalis from 903 AD

Recommended Posts

KEYNAN22

"A man of discernment said: The people of Iraq ... do not come out with something between blonde, buff and blanched coloring, such as the infants dropped from the wombs of the women of the Slavs and others of similar light complexion; nor are they overdone in the womb until they are burned, so that the child comes out something between black, murky, malodorous, stinking, and crinkly-haired, with uneven limbs, deficient minds, and depraved passions, such as the Zanj, the Somali, and other blacks who resemble them. The Iraqis are neither half-baked dough nor burned crust but between the two."

Ibn al-Faqih al-Hamadani, Mukhtasar Kitab al-Buldan, 903 AD

Dhubad.

"[Mogadishu (in East Africa)] is a town endless in its size... Its people are powerful merchants. In it are manufactured the cloths named after it which have no rival, and are transported as far as Egypt and elsewhere.

War yur iyo kud iyo gis iyo kac iyo wid iyo kir aa lagu dhahay Carabkaas whoever he was.

'Deficient minds' kulahaa. Kaaga sii daranee intaas ayaa anfici weysay hadana ku daray 'depraved passions.'

Asagoo Carab waxaas kasoo fuqday. I ain't gonna say anything about Carabs, laakiin kalabkaas, saqajaankaas waxaas qoray iyo wixii la mid in uu maanta noolaado aan rabay. Aalaada aada, naargale aalshee!

^Obviously, that's an extremely despicable and inhumane statement to make by any human being, and it's due to sheer jahiliya, but subhanallah don't wish naar for him. If anything, ask Allah to forgive him for that. smile.gif

Ibn Battuta then crossed the Red Sea to Somalia, disembarking first slightly north of Djibouti, then called Zeila. He judged it "a large city with a great bazaar, but it is in the dirtiest, most disagreeable, and most stinking town in the world" because of its inhabitants' habits of selling fish in the sun and butchering camels in the street.

Naargale aalshee, dear walaashiis, is a catch phrase, which should, obviously, never be taken as a literal meaning of the words.

Waligeey qof, Muslim ama gaal ha ahaadee, naar uma kasbin, ugumana duceynin even that despised Sharon. Eebbe addoomadiis -- walaa jini, walaa xayawaan, walaa dhir, walaa bini aaden -- reason buu u abuurtay, weligood si ha isku jeclaadaan ama ha isku necbaadaan.
