ISLAM HAS SURPASSED ROMAN CATHOLICSM AS THE WORLD'S LARGEST RELIGION

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Islam has overtaken Roman Catholicism as the biggest single religious denomination in the world, the Vatican said on Sunday.

 

 

Muslims more numerous than Catholics:

 

Monsignor Vittorio Formenti, who compiled the Vatican's newly-released 2008 yearbook of statistics, said Muslims made up 19.2 percent of the world's population and Catholics 17.4 percent.

 

"For the first time in history we are no longer at the top: the Muslims have Overtaken us," Formenti told Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano in an interview, saying the data referred to 2006.

 

He said that if all Christian groups were considered, including Orthodox churches, Anglicans and Protestants, then Christians made up 33 percent of the world's population -- or about 2 billion people.The Vatican recently put the number of Catholics in the world at 1.13 billion people. It did not provide a figure for Muslims, generally estimated at around 1.3 billion.

 

Formenti said that while the number of Catholics as a proportion of the world's population was fairly stable, the percentage of Muslims was growing because of higher birth rates.

He said the data on Muslim populations had been compiled by individual countries and then released by the United Nations, adding the Vatican could only vouch for its own statistics.

Why do you think Muslims have so many kids then??? Or What do you think is the aim of the preacher outside Topshop, or the Jehovah witness who come knocking on the door early Sunday mornings. How about the tabliqis who travel for months to spread the deen. How about the average Muslims who preaches his neighbours Or the Christian brother on the over crowded central line.

 

I'm sure most Muslims vow to make Islam the most dominate for Allah's sake. Indeed it is a competition, a race to the very end.

 

P.s. It is a shame though that with Muslims increasing in numbers, their demise rises. Quantity but no quality.

 

P.s.s. If I remember correctly Allah promised Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) that his umaah was going to be more than in another umaah and will have the largest share in Jannah, even more than Musa (PBUH)

Always has been.

 

Funny thing is, those with an added advantage (through religious ‘centric’ NGOs, powerful media etc), are now finding themselves on the losing side.

So the Sunni Muslim count has surpassed the catholics?

 

The last reliable stats that I have seen was on the documentary "In God's name" that aired late last year.

 

According to the CBS documentary, there were over 500million+shia muslims and over 950million sunni muslims and we weren't that off from the catholics on just over a billion, so in other words the sunni's have caught up to the catholics, very impressive indeed.

 

Not so goodnews for the shia muslims, but I still couldn't believe there were over 500million shia muslims in the world?
