The mad mullah has just landed. Not him exactly but his partner. Mad mullah – a term the British Empire gave to a Somali man who went out alone to fight its imperialism is used for religious zealots. He did not kill only whites but Somalis who looked suspicious. He bit so hard that the British soldiers he killed went to the grave with poems about their experience. I am not sure if he was mad or not but he was a religious zealot who did not budge until aeroplanes dropping bombs put him into hiding and left his mission unfulfilled. The one who just arrived is no mad man. She is a mad woman who could very well be the wife of the mad mullah – or rather the mad mullah’s partner. She is in her mid 40’s and lost most of her teeth to chewing the notorious narcotic qat which have not only left her wobbling but toothless. She’s only 40 but she looks 80 and can easily get the free disability pass. Unlike the mad mullah though, she is slow. He was fast and furious. She, like a computer suffering from information overload, takes good few minutes to process information. Her strength is not that of sharp mental acuity. Far from that – she has a different kind of mental ability. One she learnt on the streets, the sort of survival instinct that does not allow people like her to feel embarrassment or shame of their actions because they don’t understand the feeling. This mad mullah bites too - the kind of bite that does not cut into the flesh like a knife but the one that cuts into the character of her threats. Those she find threatening for whatever reason, she cuts them in half like the shark in the deep ocean and moves on without remorse. Her friends would call her generous. Yes, she would squander every penny in her disposal but to get attention or steal a moment she thought she had lost then deals with the severity of the consequences. Before she landed next door, I walked right into the abode of this zealot. If the mad mullah converted with the sword, zealots like this one seem to use their eyes in the place of the sword. The moment I walked I realized the piercing eyes cutting into the baggy pants and the light jacket I was wearing. She sat in the mosque alone clad in black from head to toe, so I ignored her glances and walked straight into the ablution room for quick ablution. When I returned to pray quickly before the later afternoon prayer, I could feel her cruel eyes all over me. I finished and she does not spare a minute to play the apostle. Look lady! She shrieked. I turned to my right to hear her. Do you know that a woman wearing pants is going to hell? Do you also not know that every step she takes is cursed by Allah? To her last statement, I said ‘God Forgive,‘ for her because I am not sure I can trust her sermon I listened patiently, expressionless so this must have given her the permission to carry one. Also she said, ‘while you were praying you did not follow all the rules of prostration. You did not use all the seven places of it. At this point she demonstrated for me the way to prostrate. I accepted wholeheartedly without a hint of my frustration with her. The Imam calls the prayer and we stand to follow him. She stands to my right. Her whole body weight pressed against mine. Then she steps on my little toe. I wriggle my toe from under her weight and eased my body to the left. She follows and steps on my toe again and presses her body to my right side to the point I felt I was going to fall on my left. We continue with this battle of the while and soul while the prayer was going on. Also she starts getting hysterical and reads the Qur’an aloud. It is becoming increasingly difficult to follow the imam or read the qur’an on my own. It was the longest prayer I endured. It was over. I sit quietly until she invades again! Before she starts her sermon, I beseech her with mine. I approach her as quietly as she did and ask her for her permission to speak to her. She nodes in agreement. I tell her that I read the whole Qur’an as a child and follow it. Alhamdulilaah. And I tell her accusingly that she invaded my private moments with my Creator when she stepped on my toe and pressed her body toward mine. She smiles knowingly of the argument and says ‘but the devil is going to come between us if we don’t do that.’ Never mind the devil I retort. The prayer is between you and your Allah and the most important aspect of it is focus and refection. What you have done is break that and create chaos. She tells me she lacks focus. This zealot does not know how to focus on her prayer so she ruins mine with her litter rituals. It was my turn to say: Look! The imam does not spend hours straightening the lines or stepping on others. It is not his job. He tells the congregation to stand straight and next to each other and this is all. Our Prophet was told to deliver the message and let it be. Who appointed you to spend your prayer times harassing others? She smiled. Also I carried on with my accusations, you have been confusing me with your loud reading and that is wrong especially on this time of day. She took my advice with a grain of salt since I was wearing pants and a jacket and I left her wondering about a world of focus and reflection she does not understand. Zealots or mad mullah like her do not understand the inner dimension of life. Reflection is foreign to them. Therefore, their self imposed duty is to harass others in the Mosque. One of these mad mullahs once travelled to several cities to confirm that wearing pants –albeit baggy one- was wrong. She travelled from scholar to scholar to ask that question alone and each learned scholar reject her rigid notion of dress code. I just feel like screaming at her and tell her: ‘Go to psycho-analysis.’ Yours has nothing to do with piety. Find yourself and leave me to my pants. These zealots are sometimes so tired with life because they are so busy keeping attention on them and that weary is written all over them. In spite of that, they won’t skip the chance to brew a juicy gossip and circulate it quietly or be what I call the seeker not of truth but of a delicious gossip. Imams should spend a lot of time not on their dresses but building their Islamic character – the dimension called Ihsan- or rather the right to fight their own demons. Rhoda A. Rageh USA

Resilience, resourcefulness and risk taking - A Somali grandmother’s story in America As Somalis fled their country and scattered into the four corners of the globe from Hamilton, New Zealand, to Hamburg, Germany, looking for a safe place and a better life, they faced the challenges of everyday life in strange lands. Many have faced open discrimination and outright hostility. Each time, they tapped into that indomitable spirit for survival characteristic of their culture. Following is the true story of one proud Somali grandmother I have been privileged to meet and get to know. I thank her for the permission to tell her story. Hawa Shire Abdulle, affectionately called Eddo Medino by family and friends, was living in Mogadishu when the Somali civil war erupted. At the height of the war in 1991, she fled by boat with other Somali families to the city of Kismayo, and then to Kenya. She finally found herself at Utanga Refugee Camp in Mombasa, Kenya, where she lived for three years. Life at the camp was difficult, but she was safe from the violence that was ravaging her country. Coming to America Ms. Abdulle was finally processed and approved for resettlement in the United States. She arrived at the Dallas-Fort Worth international airport on July 24, 1993. This traditional, pious Somali grandmother arrived in Dallas, Texas, with nothing but the clothes on her back. She was alone, did not speak the language, and was on her own in a strange land. She was taken to a Somali family with whom she lived for two months. As she faced the daunting prospect of surviving in her new home with no professional skills and unable to communicate in English, she was also thinking of two daughters left behind. She knew she had to figure out a plan for survival as quickly as she could. Imagine a Somali grandmother who had never been to school finding herself in America with no money and no one to assist. She rolled up her sleeves and began to map out a plan for survival: she enrolled for evening English language classes, and began to look for work. How does one find a job when you do not speak the language, and have no work history in the US? Surprisingly, she finally found work at a Dallas meat factory, doing backbreaking manual work. She continued to toil at the factory and go to her classes in the evening. Before long, she was speaking halting English. She saved money quickly and moved to her own apartment. In the US only for a few months, she surprised everyone when she installed a voice mail machine at her home, recording a message for callers in her own voice in ENGLISH! Her voice message, “sorry I am unable to answer the phone at this time, please leave a message”, was halting and with a heavy accent but it was clear and comprehensible. Ms. Abdulle continued to work at the meat factory. She was able to pay for her own living expenses and soon began sending money home to family members left behind. Having survived the brutal civil war that ravaged her home country, Ms. Abdulle faced the challenges of everyday life in America with determination. Little did she know that she would soon face new challenges that would once again test her ability to survive. The accident In 1995, while working at the Dallas meat factory where she was employed, Ms. Abdulle was severely injured in an accident. A conveyor belt carrying heavy boxes of meat malfunctioned and several boxes fell on her, causing injuries that included a broken shoulder, dislocated knee, and a serious lower back injury. In an attempt to avoid paying workers’ compensation, her employer failed to send her to the emergency. Instead, she was sent to a company clinic. She was given pain relief medication and sent back to the factory. No x-rays were taken to determine the extent of her injuries. She tried her best to do the light duty work assigned to her at the factory, but with a broken shoulder, a dislocated knee, and lower back injury, she could not bear the pain. She was unable to work and filed a workers’ compensation claim. The company contested her claim, and the Texas Workers’ Compensation Commission sided with the employer, denying her claim. When my wife and I learned of her situation, she was barely able to walk; she had no income and, unable to pay her rent, she lost her apartment. And no one knew the extent of her injuries. The next day, we took her to a doctor who examined her, took x-rays and conducted other diagnostic tests. For the first time in many months, the extent of her injuries was determined. We were outraged. The legal battle We helped her find an experienced workers’ compensation attorney who reviewed her claim and took the case on a contingency basis. We allowed her to move in with us temporarily until her case was resolved, and her health restored. The legal battle to fight for her health and her rights began in earnest in early 1996. She had surgery on her back and shoulder in mid 1996. She continued to see an assigned doctor three days a week while she fought her case in court. In April 1997, she won her workers’ compensation case in court and was awarded a modest lump sum payment, full payment of her medical bills by the company, attorney’s fees, and coverage of all future medical treatments related to her on-the-job injuries. She continued her treatment for several more years. While she got better, her injuries were so severe they left her with some permanent physical disabilities. After winning her legal battle with her former employer, Ms. Abdulle moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, in September 1997, where she continued her medical treatment. With a small disability check and housing assistance, she continued to fight for survival. She also continued her English language classes. Citizenship While on vacation in the spring of 2002, my wife and I visited Ms. Abdulle at her apartment in Minneapolis, Minnesota. We found her in high spirits, sustained by an abiding faith and a determination to prevail despite her difficult circumstances. On a nice Somali dinner of succulent lamb and rice she prepared for us, she informed us that she had been studying for her citizenship test. She asked me to pretest her on a list of the usual 100 US history questions people study for the test. She did not miss a single question! Here was a Somali immigrant grandmother who had never been to school in Somalia, was brought to America and left to fend for herself in a strange land, sustained serious injuries on the job that left her with serious physical disabilities, and yet she refused to file for any exceptions and instead was ready to take the citizenship test. In May 2002, Ms. Abdulle, having passed the required US history test in English, took the oath and became a US citizen. She continues to study the English language to improve her communication skills in her adopted country. Risk taking, resilience, and resourcefulness Today, Ms. Abdulle still lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, enjoying the company and closeness of her two daughters and five grandchildren- one daughter joined her in Minneapolis in 1999 and the other in December 2007. This proud grandmother represents the best of the Somali culture and its people. Hers is a story that illustrates the resilience, resourcefulness and risk taking characteristic of the Somali culture. Given only a passport, a plane ticket, and no money, only a Somali would have the courage to fly away into the world beyond the borders of his/her country and face whatever challenges it throws their way. . RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, 04 May 2008--It's probably as revolutionary and groundbreaking as Mozart gets these days. A German-based quartet staged Saudi Arabia's first-ever performance of European classical music in a public venue before a mixed gender audience. The concert, held at a government-run cultural center, broke many taboos in a country where public music is banned and the sexes are segregated even in lines at fast food outlets. The Friday night performance could be yet another indication that this strict Muslim kingdom is looking to open up to the rest of the world. Washington (Jam/W/Wararka)- Maamulka Madaxweyne Bush ayaa markii u horreysay muujiyey sida uu u danaynayo aqoonsi caalami ah dunida ka hesho Jamhuuriyadda Somaliland oo sannadkii 1991kii dib ugala soo noqotay madaxbannaanideeda midowgii aan wax shuruud ahi ku xidhnayn ee ay la gashay Soomaaliyada Talyaanigu gumaysan jiray 1960kii. Arrintan ayaa daaha ka rogaysa isbeddel cusub oo ku yimi siyaasadda dawladda Maraykanka ee ku wajahan qaddiyadda Somaliland. Masuuliyiinta sare ee Wasaaradda Gaashaandhigga Washington, ayaa dhowaan si caddaan ah uga badheedhay siday uga go?an tahay in dawladda Maraykanku aqoonsato Somaliland, iyagoo doodooda sal uga dhigay in ay tallaabadaasi tahay siyaasad lagu badbaadinayo horumarka ay Somaliland ka samaysay dhinacyada nabadgelyada iyo dimoqraadiyadda, isla markaana lagaga moosayo in aan deganaanshaha ka jiraa ku dhex milmin burburka iyo hallaagga ku habsaday koonfurta Soomaaliya tan markii la afgembiyey dawladdii millateriga ahayd ee Maxamed Siyaad Barre sannadkii 1991kii. Doodda arrintan ayaa soo ifbaxday waqtigan oo ay sii kordhayaan qalalaalasaha ka jira Soomaaliya oo maalinba maalinta ka dambaysa kor u sii kacaya, isla markaana dagaallada kooxaha mayalka adagi ku sii baahayaan caasimadda Muqdisho iyo guud ahaan gobollada koonfureed ee dalka Soomaaliya, iyadoo dhinaca kalena uu xilligan bilaabmay burbur ku habsaday dawladda Mbeghati ee itaalka darran. Aragtida cusub ee xukuumadda Washington ee ku aaddan Somaliland waxa hindisay madaxda sare ee sargooya qorsha guud ee amniga qaranka Maraykanka, kuwaas oo aaminsan ku dhaqanka siyaasadda odhanaysa, si loo ilaaliyo danaha iyo maslaxadda Maraykanka waa in la isticmaalo awooaha horumarsan ee dhinaca millateriga si looga takhaluso cid kasta oo cadow ku ah masaaliixdooda. Dagaalka lidka ku ah argagixisada oo maamulka Washington siyaasaddan ku isticmaalay, ayaa sababay in Maraykanku galay dagaallo fara badan oo natiijada ka soo baxday lagu tilmaamay mid ay ka faa?iidaysatay argagixisadu, marka loo eego hawlgallada ballaadhan ee kooxaha argagixsadu ka fulinayaan dunida dacalladeeda. Iyadoo haatan ay si caddaan ah u soo ifbaxday in Maraykanku ku guuldarraystay aragtida noocan ah, ayaanay haddana taasi noqonayn mid wax ka qaban karta caqabadaha qarnigan 21aad ka horimanaya danaha Ameerikaanka. Sidoo kale, iyadoo Washington isku dayaysa inay wax ka qabato dhibaatooyinkaas, ayaa haatan waxa aynu aragnaa siyaasaddii Maraykanka ee caalamka oo weji cusub oo hor leh ku socota. Fikirkan cusub ayaa la sheegay inuu yahay mid aamisan in aanay siyaasadda caalamku keliya ku koobnaan dawladaha oo qudha, balse waxay dhiirrigelinaysaa in lala macaamilo dhinacyada kalee siyaasadeed iyo bulsho, iyadoo la adeegsanayo diblomaasiyad iyo qawaaniinta caalamiga ah dhinac ah iyo macaamil dhinaca millateriga oo isna gees ah. Haddaba, marka aynu u soo noqono xaaladda dalka Soomaaliya, waxaynu ognahay in Maraykanku uu mar horeba ku isticmaalay siyaasaddan cusub, isagoo si toos ah ula macaamilay qabqablayaashii dagaal ee Muqdisho ka talinayey sannadaha badan, kuwaas oo uu ku maalgeliyey dagaalkii ay la galeen xoogaggii Maxaakiimta Islaamiga ah, iyadoo ay marag-ma-doon ahayd in Maraykanku ku kharash-gareeyey qabqablayaashaas hanti ka badan ta uu ku bixiyey samayntii dawladda Mbeghati. Dhinaca kale, Somaliland ayaa xukuumadda Washington si joogto ah uga siinaysay taageerooyin farsamo dhinacyada dimoqraadiyadda iyo horumarinta dhaqaale, iyadoo haatana xarunta Gaashaandhigga ee Pentagon-ku doonaysa in ay Somaliland ka mid noqoto xulifadeeda si taasi ugu suurtogashana waxay soo jeediyeen in loo fidiyo aqoonsi, tallaabadaas oo calaamad u ah isbeddelka aragtida cusub ee Maraykanka ee ku wajahan qaddiyadda madaxbannaanida Somaliland. PARIS, May 5 (Reuters) - Somali President Abdullahi Yusuf asked France on Monday for military help to calm the chaos that has reigned in his country for almost two decades. French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner said Paris would offer logistical and maritime support as part of international efforts to combat piracy along the Horn of Africa, but ruled out sending any ground troops. Yusuf, who met President Nicolas Sarkozy, told reporters he had requested French help on "the sea and on the ground, because the situation in Somalia really calls for security cooperation." Kouchner said France had already trained 2,000 soldiers in Burundi and transported them to Somalia, "but at the moment there is no question of putting (French) troops on the ground." France has pushed for an international initiative to crack down on piracy after its troops captured six pirates who had hijacked a yacht carrying French citizens off the Somali coast in April. Asked about allegations made on a French magazine's Web site that most of the captured pirates were members of his extended family, Yusuf said only that he knew all six were from his region. "Whether they are from my family or another, I am for justice... they committed a crime and they must pay."
