  7. Salam... I was just reading this interesting topic about "pan-somalism" i hope u enjoy it . Despite the difficulties encountered in integrating north and south, the most important political issue in postindependence Somali politics was the unification of all areas populated by Somalis into one country--a concept identified as pan-Somalism, or Greater Somalia. Politicians assumed that this issue dominated popular opinion and that any government would fall if it did not demonstrate a militant attitude toward neighboring countries occupying Somali territory. Preoccupation with Greater Somalia shaped the character of the country's newly formed institutions and led to the build-up of the Somali military and ultimately to the war with Ethiopia and fighting in the NFD in Kenya. By law the exact size of the National Assembly was not established in order to facilitate the inclusion of representatives of the contested areas after unification. The national flag featured a five-pointed star whose points represented those areas claimed as part of the Somali nation--the former Italian and British territories, the Ogaden, Djibouti, and the NFD. Moreover, the preamble to the constitution approved in 1961 included the statement, "The Somali Republic promotes by legal and peaceful means, the union of the territories." The constitution also provided that all ethnic Somalis, no matter where they resided, were citizens of the republic. The Somalis did not claim sovereignty over adjacent territories, but rather demanded that Somalis living in them be granted the right to self-determination. Somali leaders asserted that they would be satisfied only when their fellow Somalis outside the republic had the opportunity to decide for themselves what their status would be. At the 1961 London talks on the future of Kenya, Somali representatives from the NFD demanded that Britain arrange for the NFD's separation before Kenya was granted independence. The British government appointed a commission to ascertain popular opinion in the NFD on the question. Its investigation indicated that separation from Kenya was almost unanimously supported by the Somalis and their fellow nomadic pastoralists, the Oromo. These two peoples, it was noted, represented a majority of the NFD's population. Despite Somali diplomatic activity, the colonial government in Kenya did not act on the commission's findings. British officials believed that the federal format then proposed in the Kenyan constitution would provide a solution through the degree of autonomy it allowed the predominantly Somali region within the federal system. This solution did not diminish Somali demands for unification, however, and the modicum of federalism disappeared after Kenya's government opted for a centralized constitution in 1964. The denial of Somali claims led to growing hostility between the Kenyan government and Somalis in the NFD. Adapting easily to life as shiftas, or bandits, the Somalis conducted a guerrilla campaign against the police and army for more than four years between 1960 and 1964. The Somali government officially denied Kenya's charges that the guerrillas were trained in Somalia, equipped there with Soviet arms, and directed from Mogadishu. But it could not deny that the Voice of Somalia radio influenced the level of guerrilla activity by means of its broadcasts beamed into Kenya. Somalia refused to acknowledge in particular the validity of the Anglo-Ethiopian Treaty of 1954 recognizing Ethiopia's claim to the Haud or, in general, the relevance of treaties defining Somali-Ethiopian borders. Somalia's position was based on three points: first, that the treaties disregarded agreements made with the clans that had put them under British protection; second, that the Somalis were not consulted on the terms of the treaties and in fact had not been informed of their existence; and third, that such treaties violated the self-determination principle. Incidents began to occur in the Haud within six months after Somali independence. At first the incidents were confined to minor clashes between Ethiopian police and armed parties of Somali nomads, usually resulting from traditional provocations such as smuggling, livestock rustling, and tax collecting, rather than irredentist agitation. Their actual causes aside, these incidents tended to be viewed in Somalia as expressions of Somali nationalism. Hostilities grew steadily, eventually involving small-scale actions between Somali and Ethiopian armed forces along the border. In February 1964, armed conflict erupted along the Somali-Ethiopian frontier, and Ethiopian aircraft raided targets in Somalia. Hostilities ended in April through the mediation of Sudan, acting under the auspices of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). Under the terms of the cease-fire, a joint commission was established to examine the causes of frontier incidents, and a demilitarized zone ten to fifteen kilometers wide was established on either side of the border. At least temporarily, further military confrontations were prevented. Ethiopia and Kenya concluded a mutual defense pact in 1964 in response to what both countries perceived as a continuing threat from Somalia. This pact was renewed in 1980 and again on August 28, 1987, calling for the coordination of the armed forces of both states in the event of an attack by Somalia. Most OAU members were alienated by Somali irredentism and feared that if Somalia were successful in detaching the Somali-populated portions of Kenya and Ethiopia, the example might inspire their own restive minorities divided by frontiers imposed during the colonial period. In addition, in making its irredentist claims, the Somalis had challenged two of Africa's leading elder statesmen, President Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya and Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia

  9. ASYLUM SEEKERS EAT OUR DONKEYS Police hunt rustlers after 9 are snatched.Asylum seekers have stolen nine donkeys – and police believe they’ve killed and eaten them. The pets – which gave kids rides at a Royal park – are said to have been stolen by East Africans, who see their meat as a delicacy. The female donkeys vanished after thieves cut through a wire fence at night. They were then led across a golf course and driven off in lorry. Officers investigating the rustling believe the donkeys – worth £4,000 each – have been chopped up and sold. The animals were favourite at Greenwich Royal Park in south-east London and locals have been devastated to learn of their fate. A police insider told the Daily Star: “We are totally baffled over what has happened to the donkeys. They’ve been giving rides to kids for years and have become a bit of an institution. One of the main lines of inquiry is that they may have been taken by immigrants who like eating donkey meat as a delicacy. It’s no secret that we have a large African immigrant community here.” Donkey meat is a speciality in some East African countries, including Somalia. And two areas near Greenwich – Woolwich and Thamesmead – have large numbers of Somalian asylum seekers. The meat is also popular in some Eastern European countries, such as Slovakia and Romania. Just last month, the Food Standards Agency warned that donkey meat was found in salami, pastrami and chorizo being sold in British shops. The donkey rustling follows reports of swans being stolen from ponds and lakes in London by immigrants to eat. Two of the nine animals - called Mary, Mildred, Rosie, Lulu, Flossy, George, Tahley, Champagne Charlie and Tania – were pregnant and the theft has also left three foals pining for their mums. Their owner Len Thorne, 69, said: “This has really sickened me. I’m particularly appalled that they left behind the foals – that’s the same as taking a baby away from its mother.” His daughter Lorayne Ahmet, 41, said: “I think they were stolen to order. We’re fully aware that there is a big demand for them, particularly among people from certain countries who like eating them. It’s possible they’ve been taken by immigrants for that reason.” The family is also checking reports that Albanian immigrants have been spotted in the past few days giving donkeys rides in Kent seaside towns. Sad Police Insp Jim Moore said: “It is very sad for local children, with whom the donkeys are very popular. Whoever carried out this theft must be quite heartless.” Locals are also outraged by the theft. Richard Taber, 28, who lives opposite the park, said: “Generations of people around here have had rides on those donkeys. The thought of people eating them sickens me.” And a neighbour Margaret Reynolds, 76, said: “It makes my blood boil when I hear that asylum seekers have stolen them to eat.” Lol...its humours in some way, but damn they making us look worser and worser each thime...first the savage skinnys (bhd), now donkey eaters? i wonder whats next?

  20. Heres the story of the somali flag...... 1949, the assembly of the United Nations decided that Somalia would be under the former Italian colonial power as a trusteeship territory for ten years. There were three other governments who were member of united nations commission that was sent to Somalia and were sent as advisory council of the trusteeship administration of Somalia. They were Egypt, the Philippines and Columbia. In April, 1950 the Italian trusteeship administration took over power of Somalia, and the British military administration left Somali During the early months of 1954, the legislative council had been formed by the Italian trusteeship administration and advisory council of the United Mations. The members of the legislative council were composed Somalis, Italians. Arabs and Indians. They had to prepare all laws and legislation concerning the country the ten years of trusteeship territory of the United Nations. The members were not elected, but each political party, foreign community or any other recognized organizations had to select members who were representative the above mentioned organizations. Mr. Mohammed ****e Liban had been selected by the Somali labor trade union. Then members suggested the the Somalia national flag must be adapted by the legislative council in order that the somalia people get to know their National Flag before independence. So the program of the legislative council agenda reached to be discussed the Somali National Flag. Mr. Liban had proposed that only the somali members should discuss the issue of their own Flag. According to the legislative councils constitution each new proposal had to be voted on by the Legislative council members. Mr liban succeeded his suggestion.while members of legislative councils which now only Somalis. They choose the chairman for Mr. Sheik Omar. Then the temporary new chairman said that the agenda will debate the next day. Therefore Mr. liban went home and started to design the Flag. Of course he had chosen a blue color and the middle was a white star.however, each point of the white star would represent the five Somalia regions, which were divided by the colonial powers. The next morning the session started around 10:30. However, when the chairman had opened the session Mr. Liban had requested to the chairman to give him a chance to speak, the chairman allowed him. He stood up in front of legislative council members and stretched out on his chest the blue Flag with a white star in the middle. therefore as he kept on stretching on his chest, then one of the Somali members applauded and cheered while clapping for five minutes. The Somalia temporary chairman had made short speech in which he mentioned the greatness and ability of Mr. Liban whose talent had produced such a beautiful Flag less then 24 hours. Mr. Mohammed ****e Liban said the blue color stands the United Nations who help us to reach our dream of independence; white means peace and prosperity; the star is the five regions of Somali. Ps. alot of the ideas was discused before he drew the flag. The was a genius .
  21. western..As far as i heard the somali flag wasn't created by a single man, the idea came from different people but one man put the ideas together. salam.
