Ex-Somali leader advises Sh. Sharif to confront Al Shabaab 1 Feb 1, 2009 - 8:37:36 AM SANA’A, Yemen Feb 1 (Garowe Online) - Somalia's former leader has advised the incoming president to confront anti-peace groups, namely Al Shabaab hardliners, Radio Garowe reports. Col. Abdullahi Yusuf resigned as Somalia's interim president in December, after four years in power that saw the rise of the country's Islamic Courts movement. In a Sunday interview with Al Arabiya, ex-President Yusuf said "many problems" face the new administration, led by a former Islamic Courts chief, Sheikh Sharif Ahmed. "Al Shabaab is a group that is against peace in Somalia and therefore is the number one problem facing Sheikh Sharif," the former president noted. Yusuf described Al Shabaab, a breakaway faction of the Islamic Courts, as a "terrorist group," while suggesting that the especially insurgents are strong in the capital, Mogadishu. When asked if he retired from politics, Yusuf said: "If Al Shabaab attempts to attack Puntland, I will return to the country and I promise to eradicate them." Yusuf hails from the Puntland region, in northeastern Somalia. He made no mention of new Puntland leader Dr. Abdirahman Farole's refusal to recognize Sheikh Sharif as Somali president. Col. ex-president of Somalia hails Yemen supportive stance [01 February 2009] SANA'A, Feb. 01 (Saba) - Somalia's Former President Abdullah Yusef lauded here on Sunday the Yemeni attitudes supporting Somalia to bring security, stability and peace back. During his meeting with the President Ali Abdullah Saleh, Former Somali President Yusef valued the President's stance sustaining Somalia in all events and at all levels. He demanded the International community to present the requisite assistance to rebuild Somali and its institutions. Yusef affirmed that he would assist the new president of Somali Sheik Sharif, asserting that the first task that should be on the table of the new president is bringing security and peace on the Somali land. President Saleh asserted the significance of supporting the new President Sharif for reinforcing the national Unity and reconstructing the state of Somalia, accenting the importance of the solidarity of all Somalis to achieve that. The meeting also reviewed the developments and the new situation in Somalia after electing Sharif as a new president. AF/AF Saba

Xidigo, Shariff needs strong man, and Maslah is. Also the guy got 126 seats, among Somalis there...He defeated Nur Cade, and if it was not for the Sharif's own 200 MPs, he would have been the next the President, He is far better than on all those in the list, the only problem is his infamous father, and Maslah is not Siyad.

Som@li replied to General Duke's topic in Politics
Very sensitive move, this is what predecessor,Yeey did after he was elected, his priorities should be bring Somalis together, fro within, not visiting foreign countries. Horn, Umal is very influential Sheikh,Masha Allah, and has many followers, she should work with the new President. -

Moderate Is Elected as President of Somalia By MOHAMMED IBRAHIM Published: January 30, 2009 MOGADISHU, Somalia — A moderate Islamic cleric was elected president of Somalia early Saturday morning by the Somali Parliament, which was meeting in Djibouti. The cleric, Sheik Sharif Sheik Ahmed, headed the Islamic courts movement that governed the capital, Mogadishu, and most of southern Somalia until 2006. Some analysts had said they thought that Sheik Sharif had the best chance of all the candidates for president to unite Somalis, because of his Islamist roots and his acceptability to a variety of factions. Parliament was selecting a replacement for the former president, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, who resigned in late December after four years in office. A former warlord, Mr. Yusuf had been widely blamed for Somalia’s deepening crisis and had been steadily marginalized. The lawmakers broke into applause when Sheik Sharif reached the minimum number of votes needed for victory, 213, a little before 4 a.m. during an all-night session of Parliament. The legislators were meeting in Djibouti, just north of Somalia, under a United Nations-brokered deal to establish a unity government between the transitional government and moderate Islamists. “I promise that I will serve my people loyally and neutrally without color or clan,” Sheik Sharif told the lawmakers after the balloting. “I call other Somalis who are not part of this peace process to join us.” He defeated Gen. Maslah Mohamed Siad, the son of the former dictator, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Siad Barre, in the second round of voting. The outcome seemed likely after Prime Minister Nur Hassan Hussein withdrew from the balloting after the first round. He had been considered Sheik Sharif’s main rival for the presidency, but he withdrew after winning only 59 votes in the initial round. In Mogadishu, where many people stayed up all night to follow the election on radio and television, people celebrated in the streets immediately afterward, with shots being fired into the air. For Sheik Sharif, the burden of reconciling Somalia’s 10 million people and ending 18 years of bloodshed will be daunting. Most of Somalia is controlled by various Islamist militias, although some of the moderate Islamist groups support the government. The government itself controls only a few blocks of Mogadishu. The Shabab, a hard-line Islamist militia, controls most of Mogadishu and much of the southern part of the country. It has denounced the election in Djibouti as meaningless, and on Monday captured the seat of Parliament in the town of Baidoa. Somalia has been without a functioning central government since 1991, when General Siad Barre was removed from power and the army fell into the hands of clan militias, who turned on one another and left the country largely in anarchy.
