Pledges for Lebanon Donor Conference Thursday January 25, 2007 1:31 PM By The Associated Press What countries and institutions pledged in aid and loans to Lebanon at a donor conference in Paris on Thursday: UNITED STATES - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the Bush administration is seeking $770 million in new aid for Lebanon. The money, which must be approved by Congress, would finance long-term redevelopment and immediate rebuilding from last year's devastating war between Hezbollah militants and Israel. FRANCE - A loan of $650 million at ``very advantageous'' terms. EUROPEAN UNION - $650 million in new aid and loans. SAUDI ARABIA - $1 billion in development funding and an additional $100 million grant for the Lebanese government. GERMANY - $134 million. UNITED ARAB EMIRATES - $300 million. SOUTH KOREA - Reluctant to offer a new donation beyond the $5.5 million pledged last year. BRITAIN - $48 million for a U.N. refugee agency, on top of $115 million that Britain had already pledged over four years. DENMARK - $3.5 million for mine-clearance, aid and implementing U.N. resolution 1701. CHINA - Promising ``assistance within our capacity.'' JAPAN - Promising new aid on top of $7 million already pledged since July. New total will exceed $10 million, the Foreign Ministry said. WORLD BANK - President Paul Wolfowitz said the bank was ready to extend, through its various arms, about $1 billion in new loans, grants and other aid. EUROPEAN INVESTMENT BANK - $1.2 billion. ISLAMIC DEVELOPMENT BANK - $250 million. -
