Media Talk: Stability for Somalia? - £5

With Rageh Omaar, Michela Wrong, Azeb Wolde-Giorghis, Robert Baer (via phone link). Moderated by Sam Kiley.

As government forces supported by the Ethiopian military and US battleships take charge of Somalia, join us as we discuss the future of the Horn of Africa.

With no government to speak of since the collapse of the Siad Barre regime in 1991, Somalia has been ruled by warlords who led the country into chaos.

Kenya persuaded the warlords to sign a peace agreement in 2004, a new parliament was set up and a president appointed.

But its authority was undermined by the rise of an Islamist movement in 2006, which gained control of the south and the capital.

At the end of last year Islamist rule was overthrown in a concerted push spearheaded by Ethiopia and the US.

Our panel discusses the implications of the Ethiopian and US involvement in Somalia, the alleged Al Qaeda connection and the future facing this war-torn region.

Rageh Omaar is a presenter of Witness on Al Jazeera. He was formerly the BBC's Developing World Correspondent.

Michela Wrong is a columnist for the New Statesman and author of I Didn't Do It For You: How the World Used and Abused a Small African Nation.

Azeb Wolde-Giorghis - CBC Correspondent, specialising in Africa.

Robert Baer is a former CIA agent and author of See No Evil, Sleeping with the Devil: How Washington Sold our Soul for Saudi Crude. (Via phone link).

  2. SB: your inclination towards giving profanatory explinations is alarmingly normal with someone of your soiled mind. You never fail to disappoint. Keep them coming we love you for it ;) .

PS: Cambaro, pray tell what is Somali fun Love? I thought love (genericly speaking) is clinical and completely mundane. Whence the hiatus is reached the mystery vanishes taking the fun with itself. Of course, i am in the dire hope to be corrected :D

  3. "I find your story unreal. No Somali man would admit to being intimidated by a women unless his TFG supporter."

I laughed so loud that my class mates think I am becoming bonkers.

PS: She is by far unqualifed for she is not pleasing to the sight. Sorry this merits no rationale response.

  4. Duke, come on old boy you are being rather sour!

I am all for the development of Puntland but I don't think Range will deliver the wells of honey we are expecting. If Puntland wanted to make a good deal for the country then they should have solicited the help of professionals not some nephew of Ade muse who is half-witted lemon.

  5. Editor's Note

The editorial board of wardheerNews takes an exceptional pride in congratulating Warsame Ali Khalif Galaydh in becoming, along with his debate-mate, the top kid in this valuable craft of debate that only few excel. The achievement of Warsame is a rare testimony that Somalis are resilient and, when given a nurturing environment and right opportunity, are serious competitors and do often excel. It is also an unforgettable inspiration to the hundreds and thousands of young Somalis who are struggling in urban America and throughout the cities of the West not to become a mere urban statistics.

A not-so small credit also goes to the parents who guided this young high achiever through the turbulent years of an immigrant teen-age child in this vast and imposing culture of America whose tribulations and trappings suck in the unguided and unsuspecting child. It takes two, united parents and a willing child, to make it through the many nights and days of school home work and extra-curricular activities that make the groundwork for a successful life journey.

We challenge all Somali parents and their inspiring children to take notice of Warsame's achievement and try to emulate his so that we collectively create a better community. We similarly encourage other Somali parents who have similar stories to send it to us.

"If you see them in the hallways or in your classrooms,” wrote debate coach Mike Vergin in an email to all faculty and staff, “please congratulate Bert Hilke and Warsame Galaydh on winning the 2006 Minnesota State High School League's Classic Debate State Festival this weekend."

Yes, Mr. Vergin, we will - Kudos to Warsame and B......
