The demonstrators composed of wounded veterans of the Somaliland Defence Forces, the widow and orphans of soldiers who lost their lives in the line of duty, were greeted by a large contingent of police led by the acting commander of the Somaliland police force, Abdiraham Fohle, outside the presidency and the nearby Somaliland chambers of parliament. According to spokesperson for the demonstrators, the wounded veterans, widows and orphans are demonstrating against the policies of the government of President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud "Siilaanyo", which has failed to provide the necessary support to them, whilst at the some time conducting a campaign to clear street vendors from the cities of Somaliland. The demonstrators point out that most of the vendors are wounded veterans, widows and orphans of the Somalilan Defence Forces who were attempting to earn a meagre income from street trading due to the nonexistent benefits provided by the government. A similar demonstration took place outside the office of the Togdher governor a few days prior. Togdher which has become a second front for the Somaliland Defence Forces who are protecting the town of Buholde and the border with Ethiopia from militias aligned with Somaliland's opponents has seen several demonstrations by the families of wounded veterans demanding better health care and payment of any benefits. According to reliable sources, officials from the presidency have been, allegedly, systematically miss-appropriating food aid intended for Somaliland's poorest people and selling them for their own gain. These sources confirm that these business people who had just received food aid intended for Somaliland citizens at their warehouses in Hargeisa main market have direct connection to the Presidential Relief Office. This is not the first occasion in which food aid was miss-appropriated, however this instance was exposed after a group of residents gathered outside the commercial warehouses in question and protested at the theft of the food aid intended for them. Even in the hustle and bustle of Hargeisa's main market, it is quite difficult to miss the sight of eighteen(18) fully loaded trucks delivering goods to warehouses surrounded by protesters. Our sources confirm that the warehouses have been barricaded by the protesters and the owners and agents are nowhere to be found. The warehouses remain closed. The gathered protesters have been monitored by a contingent of the Somaliland police force, who according to eye witnesses, have been harassing and miss-handling the poor people who had gathered outside the three warehouses where their food aid has been illicitly stored. Those disturbances concerned the control of the port of Berbera. Eventually a resolution was reached under the government of the late President Egal. The situation remains volatile in Berbera and the surrounding areas. The only way to avoid conflict appears to be the resumption of talks between the government of President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud "Siilaanyo" and the community of Berbera. The talks were intended to gauge the opposition to the new factory from the community who claim that a local company that is willing to either rehabilitate the old factory or build a new one. The community are opposed to the license granted to Dahabshiil Ltd, and have requested previously that the administration reconsider its decision. Despite efforts by the elders of Berbera to bring about some sort of reconciliation between the community and the government, the failure of the talks are seen as a setback to the government's attempt push through the construction of a new cement factory. Last night, Minister Duur, the Somaliland Home Affairs minister issued an order for the commencement of the construction of the new factory. As the direct result of this order, the government has been moving more Police officers into Berbera and the surrounding areas to ostensibly keep the peace and head off any demonstrations by the local community. According to eye witnesses in the city, the mood in Berbera is tense with a belligerent attitude from the government side and anger from the community. There are indications that the matter may lead to the use force by both parties unless a resolution can be found which will satisfy both sides.
