Djiboutian Opposition to Protest Against President Bloomberg Wednesday, February 16, 2011 President Ismail Guelleh Opposition parties in Djibouti, the Horn of Africa nation that hosts the only U.S. military base on the continent, plan to demand the resignation of President Ismail Guelleh in a protest scheduled for Feb. 18. At least 1,000 people are expected to attend the “peaceful” demonstration that may continue through the weekend, Ismail Guedi Hared, president of the Union for a Democratic Alternative, said in a phone interview today from the capital city, also called Djibouti. The coalition group represents at least three opposition parties, he said. “People are angry,” Hared said. “The people will say we want the president to leave. We shall stay Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday.” Anti-government protests across North Africa since January ousted the presidents of Egypt and Tunisia, while similar demonstrations have occurred in Algeria and Libya. In Djibouti, Guelleh’s People’s Rally for Progress party has ruled the country since independence in 1977. The 63-year-old leader, who was elected in 1999, amended the constitution in March to allow him to extend his rule by two more six-year terms. “Guelleh has been president for 12 years and he wants to continue, but we are saying we don’t want you,” Hared said. “It is because he doesn’t do anything for the people or the country. He takes all the money.” A spokeswoman for Guelleh said she couldn’t immediately comment when contacted on her mobile phone today. Foreign Minister Mahmoud Ali Yousef didn’t answer his phone when Bloomberg called him seeking comment. U.S. Base The U.S has had a base in Djibouti since 2001, while former colonial power France also has 3,000 troops stationed in the country, which is smaller than the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The republic borders the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden and is seen as a strategic location in the U.S.-led fight against terrorism and piracy. Last month, exiled Djiboutian opposition leader Abdourahman Boreh called for elections scheduled for April to be delayed by as much as a year and for international monitors to oversee an electoral roll that includes 130,000 to 140,000 of the population of about 865,000. Boreh was the chairman of the Djibouti Port and Free Zone Authority from 2000 to 2009, when he left the country following a dispute with the government. He was subsequently given a 15- year prison sentence following accusations he was involved in a grenade attack in Djibouti that didn’t leave any injuries. Boreh denied all charges and said the case was politically motivated and unfair because his lawyers were prevented from representing him. Djibouti ranks 148th out of 169 countries ranked in the United Nations Development Program’sHuman Development Index, which measures life expectancy, education and living standards. Hundreds of anti-government protesters have clashed with police overnight in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi. The protests were reportedly triggered by anger at the arrest of a human rights campaigner. Meanwhile, Libyan state television said rallies were being held across the country in support of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. The online edition of Libya's privately owned Quryna newspaper, which is based in Benghazi, reported that demonstrators had petrol bombs and threw stones. It said a crowd protested outside a local government office to demand the release of the activist, and then went to the city's Shajara square where demonstrators clashed with police and government supporters. Government supporters have now taken over the square, according to reports. Fourteen people were injured including 10 police officers, but none of the injuries was serious, the newspaper said. A Benghazi resident said the people involved in the clashes were relatives of inmates in Tripoli's Abu Salim jail, where militant Islamists and government opponents were usually held. "Last night was a bad night," said the witness, who did not want to be identified. "There were about 500 or 600 people involved. They went to the revolutionary committee (local government headquarters) in Sabri district, and they tried to go to the central revolutionary committee ... They threw stones," he said, adding, "It is calm now." Libyan state television showed footage of a rally of government supporters in the Libyan capital, Tripoli. Participants chanted slogans accusing Qatar-based television news channel al-Jazeera – which was instrumental in revolts in neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt – of broadcasting lies. -

Its a good move. -
Each group has failed in going in its own. We are a people who are unable to build a single road. What of the Diaspora, why should they not unite?

Again, Puntland, Somaliland and others are not the enemy. Nor should time be wasted on them. We need to gather information on the common Somali. How much do they earn, how do they live, what are their aspirations, what are their dreams? Who are the new leaders, what type of leadership do they want? We are out of touch with the average Somali and how he or she lives. How can we try and solve their problems. Time is wated on the capital, yet we have none. On a parliment yet its led by illeterates. On land yet we can not share., There is war in Buhudle, how many people live in that town. Can we provide water to them, instead we raise money for bullets to kill more of its inhabitants.

Qabil is not the main issue. Tracing one's geneology is not the problem. Lack of leadership, the failure of the old guard, and the parasites around us have destroyed our people. We need to break these chains. How?
-
The Somali war has now entered its 20th year. "Man was born free, and he is everywhere in chains. The Somali people deserve a better tommorrow and no longer can we except the status quo. Its time to rethink what is in our interest, what is it that we want for ourselves and for our families ad people. Credible leaderhsip must take root in this nation... A single Somali state must be recreated, with rights for every single Somali regardless of clan, ethicity and region. We must reclaim our nation from the forces that want to continue to controll it. The UN, other NGO's and those parasitic leaders who want to hold us in bondage.
